Oliver Martin in the Transfer Portal Comment Count

2017's banner four-man wide receiver class is about to be down to three.

The hot stove boiled last week with rumors of Oliver Martin contemplating the decision he has apparently made. The heat was turned down a bit after offensive coordinator Josh Gattis posted a photo three days ago of his receivers at dinner that included Martin, but he has since decided to see whether his football future lies elsewhere. Martin redshirted 2017, so he'll have three years to play wherever he ends up.

Martin was rarely utilized last season--he finished with 11 catches for 125 yards--but came in with a reputation for laser-like route-running that presaged big things in the slot, especially considering the strengths of class mates Donovan Peoples-Jones, Tarik Black, and Nico Collins. Enter Mike Sainristil, who garnered a freight train of hype in spring ball while Martin received little mention in press conferences, and Martin must have seen a quicker route to the field away from the guy being tabbed an instant-impact freshman. At least we'll always have this.

Ollie, we hardly knew ye.

Talented dude, wish he'd stick around and keep competing for time, but can't blame him. There's only one ball and a lot of mouths to feed in that receiving corps.

Good luck to him. Probably sucks when you're a talented dude running 4th at your position in your own class.

Always long odds that all four would all finish here.

Is this the beginning of a bunch of mis-fit attrition ?  Time will tell but we have way too many FBs and TEs for a Gattis offense.  Plus do our RBs really fit his scheme ?  Not really.

If DL doesn't work out for Ben Mason at UM  I could see him transfer to a BC or Stanford - academically he is on track for a Ross degree but either of BC or Stanford is probably on par with Ross academically.

That’s my concern.  At the end of next season all we’ll hear is Gattis just needs time to recruit his players, then in three years Gattis will be gone and the cycle will start over again.

I mean this sucks in the fact that he was a highly rated WR, but that's it. He barely made an impact last season and we are STACKED at the slot receiver position. Transfers like this are bound to happen when you have like ~4 slot receivers

I'm going to be really pissed if he catches a big 3rd down conversion in the middle of the field to set up a game winning FG by Iowa against us. If that doesn't happen, then all the best to Oliver.

The number of highly ranked guys who have gone from the 2017 class is pretty astounding.

The team is now down nine 4 or 5-star guys prior to their true JR or RS SO season.

I have no idea if that's the norm for most programs, but man it seems like a lot of talent just gone.

Sounded like a very high upside prospect coming out of high school.  If he transferring because other more talented players are blocking him from getting playing time, then it is probably a good sign for the program.

I wished he stick it out because the depth chart is likely to loosen up a bit after this year.  However, I wish him the best, especially if he goes somewhere outside the Big Ten.

Just my limited opinion, but as a hypothetical coach, I would prefer to see more muscle development in Oliver given the length of time in program.  In that photo above, that's the arm of a high schooler.  Something went haywire here given the extent of Harbaugh's all-out efforts to get him into the program.  Just a possibility that perhaps Oliver wasnt showing similar zeal in all aspects of development.  Dont get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the kid - I was excited for the day he would become a starter - but I get the impression Harbaugh demands it absolute dedication and improvment/development from day one.
