Minnesota 75, Michigan 57 Comment Count

Eleven days and one starter can make a huge difference.

Less than two weeks ago, Michigan beat Minnesota 82-57. This afternoon, it was the Gophers holding the Wolverines to 57 points, their season low and only the second time they've been held below 80. Michigan shot 16-for-34 on two-pointers, hitting their lowest percentage this season. They committed 20 turnovers, tied with the hideous Oakland junk zone game for the season worst.

After a slow start for both teams, Minnesota put the game's first six points on the board, riding that run to a seven-point halftime lead. Michigan could never get enough going on offense to put the outcome in serious doubt. A three-pointer by Chaundee Brown, who started in place of Eli Brooks, cut the deficit to six points with 14 minutes to play, and he subsequently forced a ten-second violation pressing Marcus Carr.

But Liam Robbins stoned Austin Davis in the post, leading to a transition three-pointer for Gabe Kalscheur, before a couple poor plays from freshman Zeb Jackson preceded back-to-back dunks by Robbins and Carr. Michigan couldn't get within eight points afterwards, and the Gophers lead ballooned as high as 23 points before the bench mob hit a couple shots.

Hunter Dickinson had the worst game of his remarkable freshman season, scoring nine points on 4/5 shooting but turning it over five times, committing three fouls, and getting limited to 23 minutes. His seven-foot counterpart, Robbins, was the best player on the court, pouring in 22 points with two blocks and two steals in 22 minutes. That scoring matchup went 28-5 in favor of Dickinson in the game at Crisler.

Turnovers were an issue for everyone on the court except Franz Wagner, who had trouble getting good looks against Gabe Kalscheur, scoring eight points on ten shooting possessions. Mike Smith, in charge of running the offense for most of the game, had ten assists and three turnovers while going scoreless on six shots. Brown and Isaiah Livers combined for five three-pointers—and five turnovers.

The absence of Brooks also resulted in some untested lineups. Zeb Jackson tied his season high with nine minutes and got in for some of the first high-leverage playing time of his college career; he went 0/3 from the field with an assist and two TOs. When Brown got into foul trouble after Jackson's rough stint, Terrance Williams took the court. Austin Davis scored six early points but his defense was, as usual, targeted during his 14 minutes.

This is hopefully a game Michigan can write off—on the road, coming off a couple huge wins, and missing a starter, not to mention hitting only 6/22 three-pointers and coughing up 20 (TWENTY!) turnovers. An undefeated season was exceptionally unlikely. Even without Brooks, though, it was a disappointing, disjointed game from a team that had been hitting on all cylinders since Christmas. The Wolverines are still capable of beating anyone at any time. They're not perfect, though, and today put plenty of stuff on film for the team to work on.

Michigan (11-1, 6-1) maintains a half-game lead over 5-1 Iowa in the Big Ten pending Sunday's game between the Hawkeyes and Northwestern. They face a quick turnaround before facing another feisty team looking for revenge, Maryland, on Tuesday evening at Crisler. If Brooks isn't available, Juwan Howard is going to have to get creative.

Is it too much to ask that our senior starter and best defender doesn’t get injured in practice in the 3 days between playing so well that the entire country starts paying attention to them and their hardest road game of the year so far?

Edit: Zeb finishing +1 should be the death of that statistic being used for anything.

Not much to say about this one.  Michigan was just out of sync on both offense and defense all game and never found their groove.  Give credit to Minnesota for playing much better defense than they did 11 days ago.  Dickinson was due to have a bad game, and unfortunately no one else bailed us out.  I think the team will learn from this and I look for them to play really well against Maryland.

Intensity wasn't the problem (except maybe for Dickinson who almost seemed sick the way he was moving on some plays).  Focus was the problem.  Not enough of it on offense.  That's how you turn it over 20 times.  They'll be fine.  20 year olds can't have perfect focus for 30 straight games.

You can't play at that level every night, you just can't; your gonna have 'off' days. Eli is hurt, it's winter, it's an away game against a team they beat up and wants revenge against. Michigan is getting a lot of press as a number one seed too; they have everyone's attention. Which means they are going to get everyone's best game, especially if they keep winning more than they lose. The Big Ten is pretty good this year, I wouldn't be surprised if we lost two or three more times before all is said and done.

Brooks clearly makes a difference. Michigan’s lack of depth takes them out of the top five. They are only six deep, than, a Grand Canyon size cliff to davis. Johns doesn’t need to play anymore. Minny played good defense and carr responded to dakich’s bashing big time.

Were they all out drinking last night?

This team was ass from start to finish, top to bottom.

However, I fully thought they could get their shit together to come back and win up until about 8 minutes left, so it's nice to have a team that you don't immediately write off as soon as they go down some points.

Juwan just has to be careful with his rotation, Zeb should mostly be a garbage time player till he improves greatly, he's way too awkward looking out there, hopefully he'll improve but I'm not expecting too much from him till maybe a few games into his sophomore year.

Hope Eli gets back quickly.

While Michigan was very lucky to be down only 7 at the half thanks to Minnesota going 0-11 from 3, it sure seemed like luck swung way to the other side in the 2nd with Minn hitting just about every mid-range jumper in the second half (in addition to 4-5 from 3).

Michigan has been fortunate in that category.  Whatever teams were shooting on 2 pt jumpers that Ace cited in the column this week was unsustainable but when Eric Curry, Gach, etc are hitting fade away twos you just...tip the cap.

Not gonna win many road conference games turning it over 20 times.  Woof.  Just lazy, unfocused play, which happens from time to time.  Hopefully Eli gets healthy and they get back on track.  Michigan's one weakness is depth and any injury amongst the top 6 guys will hurt a lot.

You have two centers, Johns, three wings, only two guards.  Any one of the others can be replaced, but If either of the guards is out, there is no one to replace except Zeb, and we saw the results of that today.  Plus, starting Chaundee disrupts the rotation.

Eli is the glue.  Without him they looked disorganized, especially on offense, and the defense was not as good either.

Of course, it was also one of those games where we could not seem to get a shot to fall, while they got a few to bounce in.  It's gonna happen, but I hope Eli heals quickly!

Meh, just seemed like the team was off and unfocused today. Not a concern unless this team lets it get to them. It's still difficult to win on the road.

Robbins was really good. I think it's reasonable to be concerned about our ability to guard stretch fives, especially with Dickinson or Davis on the floor. We were probably a little too willing to call Dickinson a capable stretch five defender based on the limited times we've seen him in that role so far. The sword cuts both ways though -- let's see how he and the defense as a whole adapts.

Otherwise, this game was a case of us missing a lot of open shots in the first half, combined with Robins/Carr just playing really, really well. I thought the defense outside of guarding the pick and pop was fine. Minnesota has a lot of talent and plays really well at home.

I'm actually a fan of Zeb Jackson, he seems to have good handles, a nice looking left hand stroke and some quickness. It looks like he currently has little confidence. He's going in looking to play "hero ball" and hit some difficult shot to prove himself. He needs minutes playing as roll player to gain confidence.
