Michigan State Postgame Presser Transcript: Brady Hoke Comment Count

Heiko

"You should have used a different game plan."

Your rushing offense –

“A lot of negative yardage plays. I thought there were some pretty good runs once in a while in there, but you snap the ball for a 20 yard loss, you get sacked I don’t know how many times, so your yardage part of it isn’t very good. You put yourself behind the 8-ball a little bit not executing, and then you’re forced into doing some things you don’t want to do the whole time.”

What does the offensive line need to do to protect Devin better and avoid sacks?

“It’s not just the line. There’s backs involved, there’s routes involved, there’s timing, all those issues are part of it. We have to get better.”

Did all the shuffling on the offensive line have something to do with it?

“Nope.”

What’s Devin’s status? He sat out the last series.

“Yeah, he got pounded a little bit. He was a warrior out there that last drive before the interception at the end. He did a nice job getting us down the field, had taken a lot of shots early in the game. He just was a little bit worn out.”

Does he have an injury?

“No. I wouldn’t say he has an injury. I would say beat up. If that’s an injury, then that’s an injury.”

In the history of this game, the team that rushes for more yards wins. How critical was the rushing game today?

“Well it’s always critical.”

Why do you think there were so many negative yardage plays?

“We didn’t execute as well as they did.”

That’s it?

“Pretty much.”

Taylor Lewan’s personal foul?

“I didn’t see that. I think that’s his frustration more than anything.”

You had a couple trips to the red zone in the first half. Did you think about taking a shot in the end zone at all?

“I think if we wanted to take a shot, we would have.”

There’s a lot of talk before the game about the toughness gap between the two teams.

“By … you guys?”

Yeah.

“From two years ago.”

Right. Did it disappoint you that the gap seems to have widened?

“I don’t think so. I think our kids played hard. I don’t think we executed very well. There’s eight to six plays in a game like this that make a difference. And if you go back and watch it again, you’ll see there’s eight to six plays that made a difference in the game from a standpoint of momentum, standpoint of confidence, and what you want to do. That’s part of it.”

How big was it to give up that touchdown before the half?

“That was a disappointing drive there at the end of the half. It drives you crazy. You give up points right at the end of the half, and it’s disappointing.”

How do you not allow a game like this to beat you next week?

“Well hopefully you do a great job as a group of leaders. Talk about coaches, senior captains, all those guys. Understanding where we are and what we need to do. I know they signed up for a guaranteed 12 games.”

With so much emphasis on a Big Ten title, what does this team have to play for?

“Still. It’s not in our hands. But you never know unless you’re forecasting for us now. Who knows?”

Does it surprise you that there was a lack of execution with the two weeks off?

“No. I think there’s more made out of that than anything else. Does it surprise me? Yeah. It surprises me. It has nothing to do with two weeks.”

Did you think you’d be further along?

“Well I was hoping.”

Is it coaching that you have to go back and look at?

“You always do.”

MGoQuestion: Going along with that, were you satisfied with the preparation and game plan?

“Yes. We wouldn’t have run the plays we ran unless we were satisfied.”

MGoFollowup: But considering the result …

“Hindsight’s always 20/20, right?”

What did you make of Michigan State’s defensive line and Shillique Calhoun?

“I think he’s a good football player. We’ve had a lot of respect for their defense all week going into this game, and I grabbed Max Bullough afterwards because he’s one of the guys I like watching play football. We have a lot of respect for them.”

Do you think the identity of this team is that it needs to get better in the trenches?

“That’s part of it. We haven’t played the way we like to every game.”

When Devin did have time, how did you think he played?

“I don’t know. Pretty good. But it would be nice to give him more time.”

What do you tell your fan base and alumni about dropping five of the last six games to Michigan State?

“Well, they’ve won five of the last six. Something like that. Well, we gotta keep working.”

Five of six is pretty significant. Do you think there’s that big of a gap?

“I don’t think there is a gap. I think they played awfully well, executed awfully well. I don’t think we did.”

it's EIGHT TO SIX plays, man, EIGHT TO SIX.

Not SIX TO EIGHT.

btw, for whatever reason, having the coach say "EIGHT TO SIX" made me more worried than most other things in the presser - it's like a kid who is bad at math. Who in the world would say the larger number first?

The stupid questions reporters ask... They need to ask him some questions that get real answers to the problem

When Bryant was recruited/signed Hoke raved about how he was the kind of big road grader they wanted to bring in from now on.  Last year it was rumored he would have been in the starting lineup if not for his injury.  Now he goes into the starting lineup in week 5, then gets benched two games later.

Kalis was supposedly very close to playing last year.  Yet he's now been benched in favor of a guy in his class who is probably a better fit physically at another position.  What was being seen to justify the hype/expectations that clearly haven't manifested themselves on the field?  Youth is an issue, but in year 3 Rodriguez had Omameh and Lewan in the starting lineup, and the team generally posted a positive number in the rushing stats column.

Glasgow moved to center to get the "best five" on the field, but has repeatedly turned the ball over and had a drive-killing error yesterday.  There has been no corresponding improvement at the other guard spots to justify the costs of the move, it would seem.

Braden was supposedly the star of spring ball and he's been nowhere to be seen, even with all the shuffling up front.

And none of the running back recruits from the last 2+ classes are ever able to see the field. It kind of makes you wonder what the hell is going on in practice.  I can't imagine the team lines up against our defense and successfully runs the ball.

the people that are excusing borges and hoke etc for having this shit line to work with are missing the point.

Hoke and Co., should know they have an absolute shit line to work with and then plan ACCORDINGLY. And my god, there are pieces on that line that have NFL-level skill sets. But if Hoke et al., are not up to the task then it's an utter failure of leadership on their end.

"didn't execute."

pah!

And this is what frustrates me more than anything. I don't even think we have a crap offense. Unlike the RR years, I know we have good players who can make big plays. I know there's more than canned peaches and baking soda in our cupboard.

I want to eat goddamnit! I'm starving!

Yes and no.  As we saw on that one 4th quarter drive, the team started throwing short passes and running from the shotgun more with some read-option.  It isn't perfect, but it gives your QB a chance to look over the line and see the rush a bit quicker, while also bringing some misdirection to the running game.  I'm not saying this needs to be full-on read-option/RR offense, but the fact that Gardner was lining up under center and taking 5-step drops while MSU blitzed is the absolute worst type of playcalling.

However, you can scheme around the defensive gameplan of Michigan State.  I know by suggesting changes I sound like an arrogant armchair coach and all, but hear me out.

For example:

Vs. Double A-gap blitz

1) Short crossing routes to the spaces the linebackers are leaving to blitz, much like staee did to us

2) Two backs in the backfield with Gardner in shotgun to help block defenders that will inevitably come up the middle (put Green and a FB back there or two FBs there to help the blocking)

3) Faster developing plays with easy reads to allow Garner not to be pummeled (which they did very late in the game when the outcome was already decided)

The answers are there, I think, but the staff just seems too proud to at least use some of the admittedly 'gimmicky' tricks listed above.  The double a-gap blitz was just one issue.  However, if you were to look at other facets of the game, you would see more of the same: the staff not willing to adapt.

Wow...so you didn't even want to try?

The reporters aren't exactly the white house press corps, no offense, Heiko.  They mostly have their stories written already and are looking for a couple quotes to fill in.  They're not looking for a "gotcha" moment.  We may want that follow up question, but it's not really the type of press conference that is going to get that answer unless the coach is exceptionally forthright.

if he had simply said, "we wanted to but Devin got sacked" that would make some sense. Just implying that they didn't want to is strange. It's impossible to know whether that's just Brady being his usual inarticulate self, or whether he's referring to something else of a strategic nature.

It's a bit of a weird question, because I'm sure Hoke would have gone for it if it seemed reasonable.  Points and downs are still at a premium early on in the game, so I can him not wanting to waste one on a low-upside play if you expect the game to be close (as it was until the 4th quarter).

ChuckWood

I can't stand how positive he is after bad games.

And by positive, I mean not super negative.

His interviews really get to me. The entire team played like garbage.  The coaching was hot garbage.  Devin did not play well even for the lack of time he had.  A decent QB knows how to throw the ball away when they are 15 yards behind the line of scrimage instead of taking the sack.  It's not sack or INT, there is another option that results in a loss of down.

Hoke needs to man up and be hard on his team.  He needs to single guys out and fire them up.  He acts like a middle school coach that doesn't want to hurt feelings of adult football players.

ChuckWood

I'm not saying lay into them in front of the press.  He can state facts by saying individuals did not play well.  He needs to tell it how it is instead of dancing around questions and acting encouraging.  There are some serious problems with this team and it seems like the coaching staff refuses to admit that.

But as others have pointed out, he is basically saying that by blaming execution.

The coaches clearly recognize the issues with the team; they've flipped 3/5ths of the offensive line on a near-weekly basis, moved Funchess to WR while minimzing the TEs, and have moved LBs in and out of the lineup pretty consistently.  At some point, this is the team they have, and they are going to see what they can do.  I said at the beginning of the year this team felt like 8-4/9-3.  That seems about right given the next couple of weeks.

That is one word I would like to hear Hoke use for once. I don't care what the expectations at Michigan are or what it takes to be a Michigan Man. I want to know where he draws the line. Not at the end of the season, but after each game, after each play.

Then again, Saban didn't have more than 7 wins at MSU until his fifth year.

It's like we're getting a different version of the patented RR weekly "Well, they didn't do it in practice all week, so I don't know."

Like James Brown said, "talking loud and saying nothing."

Hoke has a great attitude. He just needs to realize that there is a time to be a nice encouraging guy and a time to lay into some people. It is time for a change at offensive coordinator. Under Borges Denard and the offense regressed his first 2 years and this year speaks for itself. Akron and Uconn were not a fluke. The offense looks clueless!

Agree with this. It's nice that he doesn't throw anyone under bus and shatter players' confidence. They know they didn't play well enough and he feels he doesn't need to pile on; as he says, they are kids. But there comes a time where you may need to weed out some of the weaker players, mentally and physically, and toughen them up. Jump in their ass and see how they respond. Being what we call a 'man manager' works to a point. Sometimes some tough love is in order.

of the coaching, especially coaching of both lines.  Evidently Darrell Funk is unable to coach up some of the best talent he's ever had, and maybe he figures the more stars they have the less they need to be coached.  Either way something has got to change for the better, and maybe one of those changes is showing Funk the door.

John McKay when coaching the dreadful Tampa Bay Bucs in the 1970's was asked this question and gave the following answer.

Media member- "How do you feel about your teams execution?"

McKay- "I'm all for it."

What about saying "our game plan did not work and that is on me".    Really disappointing how he deflects everything.  I am tired of HEARING we need to get better.  He is the f----ing coach it is HIS job to make them better and I just do not see that happening.  We have been talking about the O line for 6 weeks and there has been no improvment.  Experience alone does not explain the complete incompetence of the running game.  Very disappointing.

This is the type of game that could have long lasting effects. As long as Dantonio/Narduzzi are still there, I'm not sure we will beat them. We have become too predictable on defense and disorganized on offense. I can't even remember the last time we physically dominated MSU like they did to us yesterday.

should be asked and continue to not be.

It looks like your offense gets stuck not able to audible because they get up to the line with fewer than 5 seconds, since you're one of the few teams to do this, what is the justification for huddling?

Why aren't you doing the spread punt when you struggle in coverage so frequently?

I'm sure someone smarter than me can ask about specific run plays where the blocking does not seem to match up the defense at all and has disastrous results.  Are we not anticipating the defense at all?

Are there counters to tackle over if the defense stacks against it?

Do you regret turning down Schutt's committment interest now that you have very little defensive line penetration?

Why can't you take advantage of your talented tackles to develop a running scheme?

Are you embarrassed by the worst offensive line at Michigan ever?

Reporters wont ask the toughest questions because they get attacked if they do. They are weak just like our game plan. They have a job to keep, a low paying one at that so they aren't going to risk anything. Heiko asks the best questions. Further, guys who don't have much to say are usually champions. The pats are a solid example. We, shockingly aren't at that coaching tier yet.

Come on Heiko!!! Your own blog gave you Hoke's home and road win percentage. There are 34 data points (which is statistically valid) supporting Hoke's poor road record vs. his home record. Lay those numbers out to him and keep pushing for an explanation and if he doesn't have one push on what he will do differently to figure it out.
