1. Offense

starts at 1:00

Why are we playing an ACC team? Harder to appreciate a blowout with what's coming next. What other team is walking to their doom at the end of the season every year? Cade goes 75% on completions for >10 yards per completion - helped out by some spectacular catches. Donovan Edwards has more receiving yards in this game than Chris Evans did in any single season. Hassan Haskins only gets 78 yards at 3.9 YPC, does not help that Cade will not keep the ball on a read. JJ McCarthy shows some flashes in this one, including a reminiscent Denard-first-snap play. McCarthy extends a play that Cade probably would have otherwise thrown away.

[The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]

2. Defense

starts at 26:48

Ground game defense feels a little bit concerning considering Maryland is a team that does not run well. Not great signs for Ohio State. Solutions on what to do when being blatantly held - just go down? Did a nice job holding Rakim Jarrett to two receptions. Michigan is #4 in SP+, and yet are 8.3 points behind Ohio State, which is huge. Hard to be happy about being #4 because we have a Sword of Damocles.

3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory

starts at 41:54

Takes so hot they look like Mike Locksley after his team takes multiple red zone penalties on the same drive. Locksley's facial expressions are far too relatable to an exasperated dad. Jay Harbaugh - best coach on staff? Not a hot take, just a question. Kick return trick play won't work against Ohio State since Ohio State doesn't pooch kick.

4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac

starts at 56:44

Michigan State's pass defense was, uh... thoroughly exposed. Michigan just has to not lose that badly to go to the Rose Bowl. Nebraska doing what Nebraska does - losing to a ranked team by one score. Nebraska is ranked #33 in SP+, Michigan State is #34. Braelon Allen is emerging as a consistent runner for Wisconsin. Minnesota plows through the erotic rotting corpse of Indiana football. Indiana is a loss to Purdue away from being winless against Power 5 teams for the first time since Kevin Wilson. Looking at the boxscore, how did Iowa win by 10? P00N results in Brian setting the rules for all M00N related scoreboard jokes. Rutgers couldn't score once against a flu-ridden Penn State team.

MUSIC:

THE USUAL LINKS:

We're all frauds because we're all college football teams. Michigan has a very good college football team; it's just that their rivals are professionals whose one collegiate conceit is they hate us more than they hate COVID.

I had to refresh my memory on the parable of the Sword of Damocles.  I was initially confusing it with the Pit and the Pendulum, where the protagonist is tied down and watching a razor-sharp blade swing ever closer to him, which I think we all feel is the impending annual doom of the OSU game.

He gets away with the the aid of some helpful hungry rats and the French army.  Not sure how that could fit into our storyline on Saturday, but I'll keep my eyes open and post back once I figure it out.

I'll hang up and listen.

I like this analogy. Ryan Day strikes me as the kind of guy who would take the tiniest perceived slight and hold onto it to the point that he'd go to the trouble of stacking a bunch of bricks in a moldy catacomb *just* on the off chance that he *might* get to kill you with them someday.

"The thousand injuries of Harbaugh I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon pointing out that my team was clearly breaking the rules during the COVID shutdown I vowed revenge."

And, to be real, if someone promised me a bottle of Blanton's, I'd probably follow them down there.

The sword of Damocles is related to the power. It’s a reminder that with great power comes great danger/responsibility. I think he is referring strictly to the sword itself, not the parable as a whole. The sword is hanging by a single thread of hair, waiting to fall.  In this case, he seems to mean that Michigan is under said sword. The problem is that Michigan is not Dionysius.  We’re more Damocles right now. The story really would apply more if OSU was Dionysius, and it could since they did commit many atrocities on their ascension, much like Dionysius.

Again, I don’t think it’s meant to be an application of the story, but rather just the sword, dangling there as a reminder of impending doom.

Yep, I figured that. Helping a brother out…once I got one layer deep I discovered that you clearly meant just the sword itself. Impending doom indeed.

I’ll be happy if the sword never falls…I just assume it will fall on Saturday around 1:00.  If we’re lucky it’s after halftime.

huge props for the "you're dead" bump music.  "what we do in the shadows" is a fantastic show....and the song is a great fit for at least some of my vibe this week:  super-excited, yes, but with an undercurrent of terror and dread.  like every rivalry game.

You'll never get a second chance
Plan all your moves in advance
Stay dead, stay dead, stay dead
Stay dead and outta this world.

saturday can't come soon enough.

Holy shit guys. This team was given up for dead 12 months ago. A vast majority thought 8 wins was the ceiling and there was no way they would be in conference title contention this week. Huge staff turnover, transfers, Texas stealing one of our top recruits! And yet this team is 10-1 and has everything to play for!!! Put an ounce of steel in your spine this week at least, this team has earned that much from us.

Logged in for the first time in forever just to second this. If you can't enjoy this season - even if you think we're probably going to lose next week - I don't know what to tell you. I cut my teeth as a Michigan fan during the late Schembecler/Moeller/early Carr years. This season looks exactly like what a GREAT season back then used to look like. Heck, back then we also had to accept that the season was probably going to end in disappointment - if not with a loss to OSU (and Bo lost to OSU plenty), certainly with a loss in the Rose Bowl. But we still enjoyed the season! It really is possible!

No one HAS to let a loss to OSU ruin an otherwise really fun season. That's a choice. Don't make it!

The only reason we're all having so much fun this season is because the OSU game is looming every bit as large as it should be.  If it wasn't this important, how much fun would we have had?

Anyone that thinks last year, or the last 47 years, has something to do with Saturday's game is a moron.  Yeah, pressure has a way of building itself up.  It also has a way of over-burdening itself - this game has been lost so often, where's the pressure to win it anymore?

I dunno, I'd be having considerably MORE fun if I felt like OSU sucked and we were going to blow them out.

I'm tired of high stakes The Games. I'm sick of the Death Star year in and year out... I miss John Cooper and I'm not ashamed to say it

Me too.  I can't even remember the last time I logged in.  But here I am to "second this" as well.

My favorite podcast segments have always been Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac.  The best of those segments this year have been the ones where Brian left so that Jamie and Seth could actually talk about games without Brian constantly stopping them saying, "It doesn't matter, no one cares, let's move on."

Brian's attitude the entire season has seemed rather childish to me.  "If we can't be first then nothing matters."  It has been in just about everything he says and writes for some time.  Football is pointless because Michigan can't finish first.  Basketball is not pointless because the tournaments at the end mean losses during the season don't matter and we can still "finish" first.  And I don't want to tell someone else how they should feel, but folks, this is supposed to be college sports we are talking about.  College sports.  Intercollegiate athletics.  Interscholastic contests.  This is not the pros.  At least it's not supposed to be.  The emphasis here is off.  The individual games should matter more and the national standings or even conference standings should matter less.  Every game matters because the team from my school is playing the team from another school.  That's it.  And it's enough.  That's what has always made college and high school sports great.  How many teams go into every season knowing they have no chance to finish first?  Almost all of them?  Should they all just not play the season then?  There have been a lot of games to enjoy this season.  Maybe we should just try to enjoy the games.

And now I will log back out for an unspecified number of years.

I usually just skip to the Jamie Mac segments now, if I listen at all, because it's nice to hear another person who somewhat enjoys college football.  Brian usually tries to rush through that segment with his typical mutterings.

Here's the thing about "negative expectations" (or whatever) though: they don't actually work.  They don't make the pain any less.  I think there's a Bob Dylan line about love eventually burning you whether or not you get your hopes up, so you might as well get your hopes up.

Yep, this season has been a lot of fun. Frustrating at times, but its been really fun to watch this team get better and better. That was the predominant "positive" outlook on the season for a lot of people. Most said they would win maybe 6-7 games at the most and even the positive people said they just wanted to see the team improve and play hard each week. Now they are sitting with 1 loss and people are still upset. This place is going to be brutal if OSU beats them bad again this year, which almost every person would have expected pre-season.

November 22nd, 2021 at 10:31 AM ^

I mean, compared to a loss, no, but essentially every positive statement ended with "but of course none of this is going to matter against Ohio State." The entire theme was "we can't ever enjoy a season because the last game is a guaranteed loss to Ohio State". If that's not a downer, what is?

I mean, this is from the damn write-up:

Michigan is #4 in SP+, and yet are 8.3 points behind Ohio State, which is huge. Hard to be happy about being #4 because we have a Sword of Damocles.

So because OSU is one of the top 3 teams in the country one shouldn't be excited that UM is #4 and finishing last year (checks notes) 65th.

I mean, I'm inclined to cut Seth and Brian a ton of slack and love what they do here but I stopped listening to these when I went on my morning runs because I'd inevitably just be scaring others when I blurted out "oh for fuck's sake" a half-dozen times a listen.

I kept listening to these longer than the WTKA stuff because the combination of doom and water-carrying in those made them nearly unlistenable. This pod going down to two guys who either don't want to talk about Michigan football or want to pound the same point for 10 minutes is just a bad listen, even if you agree with something they're saying.

bronxblue

November 22nd, 2021 at 12:05 PM ^

Yeah, I sort of gave up WTKA some time ago but these podcasts have gotten almost unlistenable until Jamie comes on, which is crazy because Michigan 10-and-fucking-1.  And I can't imagine how they'll be if basketball and hockey continue to be inconsitent.

I think Brian and Seth make good points, but I had to look up Cade McNamara's numbers before I realized he's thrown for 9 TDs and 1 pick in his last 4 games and is actually net-positive on the ground.  You'd think he was Joe Milton from last year based on the discussion.

It was a little better earlier this year when Alex was on with them. But once it was just Seth and Brian it was over for me. Two guys sort of arguing about sports isn't fun to listen to. And them never knowing what play the other is referencing got old real fast.
Maybe it will get better if/when they're back to being in the same room and they can go back to relying on visual cues from each other to understand the point being made.

To be fair that is a pretty shitty situation. It does feel like we can never have nice things, and all the national narratives about how we suck because it's Year Whatever of Harbaugh and he still hasn't gone to the conference championship game. Its like well yeah there's been a Top 3 team in the way every single damn year. On top of PSU and MSU being good. It sucks.

But damn, lets just enjoy the season for what it is and be glad the team is good again

Newton Gimmick

November 22nd, 2021 at 3:16 PM ^

Yes, but even then -- 8.3 points plus home-field advantage puts it down to about 5 or 6 points predicted differential.  That's hardly insurmountable.  Oregon is 18 points behind OSU in SP+ and beat them.  A little different OSU, perhaps, but they aren't invincible.  Nebraska (22 points worse in SP+) was driving to take the lead late before a shoulda-been-PI wasn't thrown.  Only gave up 26 points.  Penn St (15 points worse in SP+) -- a comparable defense to Nebraska's and ours -- only gave up two offensive TDs to OSU in Columbus.  The paths are there.

Vegas has the line around 8 right now with a 64 O/U.  That's a 36-28 final score.  CBS Sportsline predicts OSU 33, M 32.

A loss is more likely than not but is far from impossible.  Even though everyone under the sun is expecting OSU's A+ effort (and not the C effort we saw for half this season), and that's certainly baked into the line, there are very few teams in the country who could face OSU and not be double-digit underdogs.

Didn't even bother listening, the teaser writeup was more than sufficient to get the tone.  The BPONE hyperbole is overwrought and counterproductive.  This is not a moment of existential crisis for the football program, or you, for that matter, no matter how much you are convinced that it is.  Channel your inner '69, '97, '03, and '11.  Steel in the spine indeed.

I've listened to six minutes of this so far and I'm already appalled at the defeatist attitude here. Is Ohio State incredibly good?  Yes. Are they probably going to win?  Yes. BUT FUCK THAT. Enough loser talk!!! Slay the Beast at its most powerful.

I actually like our chances this Saturday.  That doesn't mean I'll put money on it, but I will invest my emotions.

I went the game in Maryland this weekend, and the fans were just going off about Locksley and how much better Michigan is coached, which was so pleasant to hear for a change.  What I really learned from this game though was the lack of home field advantage.  About half the fans were Michigan.

I'll be in the stands this Saturday doing my best to make this a home game and hope that we can hit CJ a few times and maybe create a few turnovers so that we actually win the turnover battle for the first time since 2013, a slugfest that began with the infamous Marcus Hall gesture.

We are due.  Please let this be our year.

L'Carpetron Do…

I like that attitude. I mean I get it - Ohio State is a juggernaut and they have our number. I'm keenly aware of the situation and part of me can't stand to watch another meltdown, so I'd rather invest my money than my emotions at this point.  But, I think this sad attitude and 'doom' talk is weak.

And you're right: these punks aren't unbeatable. They lost to a pretty meh Oregon team.  A beat-up Penn State team and a hard-luck Nebraska team both kept it close and were potentially within striking distance. So, if they can do it, why can't Michigan do it and go a step further? ( I would also like to thank our Spartan friends for essentially lying down on the field against Ohio State last week, giving them the opportunity to rest all of their key players! Do you really hate Michigan that much, you couldn't even ding up the Buckeyes a little for us?  While we're on the topic of ancient Greece: that performance was very un-Spartan-like).

If we're gonna go down, go down swinging. Go for the glory and if you don't get it, go down with some guts and pride. Just play your ass off.

I know Michigan will probably lose by 52.8 next Saturday but I bought my tickets and maybe, just maybe they win!

11 - 2 with Rose Bowl win over Oregon or Utah would be a very nice bounce back year.

Great growth and then back to the laboratory for Harbaugh to figure out how to solve the Columbus Death Star!

The anti-Cade bias continues unabated through the 11th game of a 10-1 season so far. How else am I to understand this:

Cade goes 75% on completions for >10 yards per completion - helped out by some spectacular catches… does not help that Cade will not keep the ball on a read.

I remember one spectacular catch on a Cade throw and one on a JJ throw. What would his completion percentage be if he wasn’t hurt by his receivers dropping DO passes? And the week before the Game, you really want him keeping the ball on non-existent reads exposing himself to potential injury? Seth gets the cyan for his biased opinion. Do better.

You need to knock it off too. You know how much your contributions are respected here, and when you say things, that carries weight. When you jump in with a guy who wants to drive me off this site, that affects other people's opinions of me, and damages the site.

For the record this might be a UFR+ record for Gattis so far.

Seth, I've been following the discourse you and bronxblue have had through this entire season and I think you guys both come off as respectful towards each other. I really enjoy both of your insights.

You know how much your contributions are respected here, and when you say things, that carries weight.

I think one of his main points, if I interpret correctly, is exactly what you pointed out to him. Your contributions carry the most weight on here at the moment, and deservedly so. I'm sure it's challenging to walk that line between calling it like you see/study it, and trying to inspire hope and support from us fans.

You have been riding me about this all season and no matter what I say you're going to keep riding me. I'm not going to go and pull all the things I've said about Cade to prove you wrong. You have this idea in your mind and you are not going to let it go no matter what, so I have completely given up on any possibility that any amount of sense can get through to you. Knock it off, or get banned.

Speaking to the rest of you: This guy constantly misrepresents my analysis of McNamara. He's been on a crusade all year to crucify me for cyaning Cade in an FFFF chart. Please don't encourage him any more.

Of course, the Sword of Damocles never actually fell in the story. It scared the crap out of Damocles, who couldn't take the pressure, while Dionysius went right back to living as king under the (metaphorical) sword afterward.

If we are looking for ancient inspiration, I prefer Carthago delenda est. Cato would supposedly end every speech in the Senate with "Furthermore, I consider that Carthage must be destroyed". It took decades, multiple wars, and multiple Roman armies getting destroyed by Hannibal in Italy itself, but eventually, Carthage was most emphatically delenda'd.

You say that basketball has no equivalent. But of course it does! The NCAA tournament is a great buzzsaw where all but one team will end the season on a string of victories only for it all to come to nought but tears. The difference is that we allow ourselves to see a Sweet 16 exit for what it is: a disappointment to be sure but still an impressive accomplishment. Just like getting 10 wins and a chance to win the division in the last game of the season is an accomplishment, there to enjoy if you would just let yourselves.

Ceterum autem censeo Columbium esse delendam!

No one knows how to pronounce "Damocles" correctly because everyone from the time the parable was written is dead, and the era predates audio recordings.  So don't worry about it.

Well, to an extent.  Coincidentally, Damocles was mentioned in Kusogrande (a bad video game tournament streamed on Twitch) and the host deliberately pronounced it "Dah-muckles", which is probably as far from Ancient Greek as theoretically possible.
