The Sponsors

This show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, because if it wasn’t you'd be listening to a podcast in German right now.

Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: Franz is gonna put them to sleep like they're staying the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, put Michigan in their heads so bad they'll have to join the University of Michigan Alumni Association, give them such bad rheumatics they'll have to call Ann Arbor Elder Law, bust into their lane so often Michigan Law Grad will have to get him out of there, put up so many highlights Human Element will have to a make a website to host them, deliver so many daggers Phil Klein Insurance Group will have to originate a crushed souls policy, be so money from distance he'll need Peak Wealth Management to invest it, live in the corner so much HomeSure Lending will have to help him take out a mortgage there, and…sorry I can't think of a metaphor for Fuegobox, can you?

--------------------------------------------

1. The Franzsegment (Pronounced "Franzigment")

(starts at 1:00)

You have to understand, we didn't think basketball was going to be all that good this year. Now we're all about the Franzening. We do some minutes pie: Is he a 2 or a 4? Or is Livers a 4? Who are the five? Pushes this team from one worrying about dropping some games to the decent middle of the Big Ten to pretty confident they can get past them. Iowa plus defense. Wagner probably taking the Iggy role. Can't take an injury, but that's true for all teams in basketball.

2. Recruitaplijhbfafha (pronounced "Recruitaplijhbfafha")

(starts at 39:13)

Concerts we went to that date us. Also: running backs, receivers shaped like running backs, and receivers shaped like running backs who can play outside. Speed in Space. Watch the Top Billin' video on Blake Corum! If you were ordering off the offensive tackle men you would choose Jeffrey Persi's traits. Seth tries to argue the near five-star is underrated because Notre Dame and Michigan found him. St. Frances owes us. Drevno's into ankles like a character out of Wheel of Time. Fun with Loy.

3. Recruitaplijhbfafha: Defense (Alsø alsø wik)

(starts at 1:15:11)

Going Greg Frey route on the defensive line too. With McGregor in the class you don't need Anchors but they're getting a couple of Carlo Kemp molds. Our favorite linebacker in the class is the best guy to play running back (Wisconsin and Stanford wanted him). When recruiting a Viper you want a guy they call "Apache" who gets compared to the Tasmanian Devil. A segue into Oliver Martin and how to transfer. Morant: not the top safety in the country to anyone except 24/7, straight-line speed might be a question. Started as a linebacker then shifted to corner.

4. Soccer

(starts at 1:49:42)

Seth picked the wrong time to try to become a US soccer fan. Women's soccer is great for the cultural things and the "suck it get a Title IX" thing but kinda feels like being an Alabama fan. A philosophical discussion over what happened in the Gold Cup Final: not talented enough to win when their plan that works doesn't actually pay off. Second half just can't get the ball because they're not talented enough. If you pay attention to the meta game, they were better than Mexico, but randomness is part of the sport.

My initial reactions to your conversation:

  • I'm high on Bajema cracking the rotation, but over time and not right away.
  • I'm not as down on Brooks as Ace is.  A guy who knows the system and is a good defender is going to get minutes.  We can bash his 3pt%, but be careful over-reacting to it.  He was 14-48 last year.  If he his just THREE more shots, he matches Poole's 3pt% from last year.  I think he starts the season at the 2 and is part of the rotation for defense until/unless Bajema/Nunez take it from him or Johns demands to be on the court.
  • I don't see Wagner playing the 4.  I think that's Livers and Johns (long shot for twin towers with Castleton).  There are too many question marks at the 2/3 and Livers has already shown he can play the 4.
  • The saving grace of Wagner is that it allows all of the unknown players to settle into a reasonable role and we only need to hit on 1-2 as rotation guys.  Brooks can play 15-20 minutes as a defender and second ball handler without having to play 30 minutes.  Johns can play 15-20 minutes and ease his way into a bigger role.  Bajema, Nunez, or DDJ can play 5-10 minutes early in the season as the 8-9th guy.
  • The three departing players were 155-443 (35%) last year.  That's a lot of shots to make up with Wagner (200?), Livers (+50?), whoever rotates at the 2, etc.  I think we'll be more efficient despite the longer line because more shots will go to the two best shooters.
  • The biggest issue with this team is that they still don't have anyone who can go get their own shot in crunch time.  That's why I do think you'll see more post-offense because I think Howard will try to get some shots near the rim using that skill since no one is winning a 1-on-1 match-up on the perimeter except Z.

"A guy who knows the system..."

What system does he know?  Juwan Howard is not going to run John Beilein's offense, he's going to run Juwan Howard's offense.  So none of the players "knows the system" - they are all starting at the same place on the ground floor.

But on-court experience plays a part, and Brooks has more of that than DDJ or Nunez.  If he can use that as an advantage, he'll get those minutes early and can defend them with play.

Can't take an injury, but that's true for all teams in basketball.

Except for MSU last year when they accidentally got better because of injuries. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My first concert was Pat Benatar, at Pine Knob, in 2000 (I think). My mom had 2 tix and my dad had no interest, so she dragged me there. I only knew one song. My next concert (Godsmack w/ Puddle of Muddin 2001) was much better, and I sat behind (and got to meet) Darren McCarty.

Anybody else having trouble with the podcast on iPhone?  Takes forever to download (perhaps due to file size?) and then stops playing at around ~1m 30s.

First concert: Bonnie Raitt at Lincoln Center. My mother took me. Would have been somewhere between 72 or 73. Thanks for summoning that memory!

Better than Mexico's B or C team, yes. And a win would have been nice. They're on the way up, but--everyone sees it--there is not enough talent. Humbling to realize that Bradley is just too old.

Re: the women. Yes, they are Alabama, if hipper. But Trump, and the other circumstances surrounding the push for parity, made this a necessary win. They do not handle the ball as prettily as some of the other squads and no one will be surprised if they don't repeat in 23. (Visits to N. and S. Korea, anyone?)

"Better than Mexico's B/C team, yes." 100% this. The men's team just isn't very good right now. It will cycle.

And if we're playing the "meta" game, that would imply Curacao is better than our men's team. You either win or lose, even in a low-scoring game like soccer.

Boston guy here. Buckingham, Brown, & Nichols is referred to as BB&N. More importantly though, the league that BB&N and Milton Academy compete in (ISL) and the regional league (NEPSAC) has even more terrific school names:

Law firm division:

  • Noble & Greenough (Nobles)
  • Brimmer and May
  • Choate Rosemary Hall (Choate)
  • Loomis Chafee
  • Wilbraham & Monson

Old Timey New England Division:

  • Avon Old Farms
  • King Low Heywood Thomas
  • Kingswood-Oxford School
  • Portsmouth Abbey

"Women's soccer is great for the cultural things and the "suck it get a Title IX" thing but kinda feels like being an Alabama fan."

I watch no soccer whatsoever so maybe I'm missing something obvious but "Alabama fan?"

They've been overwhelming favorites to win the last two WCs and delivered.  Heck, their loss to Japan back in '11 was an upset.  They haven't straight-up dominated every game, but they've basically been the #1 team in the world eight years running, and when they're up against "have-nots" it's a procession of drama-free beat-downs.  Their match against Thailand was a classic "stop, stop, (s)he's already dead" moment.  (The final score was 13-0.)

So, yeah, this is what it must feel like to be an Alabama football fan.  If you're not a sadist, you're either bored or even feel sorry for the competition.

I guess I'm a sadist because during the era of the Big 2 and the Little 8, I never felt sorry or got bored with beating Iowa and Northwestern 62-7.

Of course the difference with Alabama is that Bo's teams of that era couldn't win the last game of the season to save their lives.
