Joel Starlings Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

One of the first thoughts that came into the head of most Michigan fans after the Wolverines shocked Ohio State yesterday in Ann Arbor was about the impact that such a win would have on the recruiting trail. Today we began to see some of the dividends, as 4* defensive tackle Joel Starlings from the 2023 recruiting class announced his commitment to the Wolverines:

Starlings is from Benedictine HS in Richmond, VA and measures 6'5", 310 lbs.. He is currently nestled just inside the top 200 of the 24/7 Sports composite for the 2023 class, ranking #196 nationally as an overall prospect. Among defensive linemen, Starlings checks in at 27th, and he's ranked the 3rd best prospect in the state of Virginia. Starlings is just the second commit to the 2023 class, joining kicker Adam Samaha (from Ann Arbor's Huron HS), who committed recently as well.

Since the 2023 class is just in the early stages of being forged, it is there that the recruiting impact of yesterday's victory will be more clearly felt. The 2022 class is wrapping up ahead of December's early National Signing Day, but some undecided recruits could still be swayed down the stretch.

It seems likely that he was at the game but I'd like to know for sure. Not particularly important but it would be interesting to know if watching it on tv could make such a strong impression that he was moved to commit right away.

Speaking of television coverage as it relates to recruiting, how awesome was it that Fox stuck with the coverage and the pouring of the fans on to the field for a good 20 minutes after the game ended? That scene, along with the subsequent Big Game wrap-up outside the stadium was like a 45 min 〽️ recruiting infomercial. What a scene!
