Jacob Smith Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

Three! Three J. Smiths in the class, ah ah ah!

Plus two.

The highest rated J. Smith to commit so far, Jacob is the edge-playing twin brother of Jerod Smith; they are not related to linebacker commit Jaden Smith, nor wavering OSU WR commit Jeremiah Smith. Jacob was an important recruit for Notre Dame, but once Michigan had his brother turned around it seemed only a matter of time before the twin followed.

In that time Michigan grabbed fellow edges Devon Baxter, Dominic Nichols, and Elias Rudolph so there might be a playing time squeeze once they're all sorted out. Michigan technically has three positions to fill between Heavy (Mike Morris's job last year), Weakside (Okie, Upshaw, et al.), and OLB (Harrell), and only got Derrick Moore, Enow Etta and some fliers in the last two classes, so it's a load-up year. Nebraska was the main competition, with A&M, Wisconsin, and Kentucky hanging around.

Michigan hasn't had a J.Smith on the roster since 1970s WR Jim Smith. There was also an end named Jeffrey Smith in the late '50s and early '60s, and a John E. Smith who played a season here while stationed in Ann Arbor during WW2.

We'll have a full writeup on Jacob Smith that's about less important things than signing three J.Smiths in one class in the next week or so.

The aforementioned Jim Smith was a big, fast, and reliable receiver for Bo.  He went on to a respectable career catching passes from Terry Bradshaw and winning 2 super bowls.  Let's hope the three young pups fare so well.

I know this doesn't make me a good person.

I really want Jerod to wear #38 and Jacob to wear #83 just to make it really, really hard on whoever has to chart defensive line play when they're both starting.

No room on the roster for John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith, I guess.

And yes I will make this joke because while I know that's not the name, I was completely convinced as a young kid that that was how the song went.

We missed out on a couple front 7 top targets. If that bums you out, here is a list of Michigan's front 7 recruits with their best ranking for a boost.

Jacob Smith 97
Jaden Smith 102
Jerod Smith 141
Mason Curtis 166
Devon Baxter 199
Elias Rudolph 219
Jeremiah Beasley 239
Cole Sullivan 256
Owen Wafle 342
Ted Hammond 366
Dominic Nichols 407
Manuel Beigel 559

Pretty, pretty good.

Jeffrey Smith went on to become a hall of fame high school football coach (and my math teacher). I was in the same class as his son, who was quite the high school football player. Sadly, he was an E. Smith and not another J. Smith.

Coach Smith ran a version of Crisler’s Mad Magicians offense and taught Analysis. As a fan, it was frustrating to watch because I could never figure out who had the ball.

Did we get deeked here? There was an announcement that his decision was going to be postponed, then boom! I hope it’s the sign of a sense of humor, cause that’s funny if he deeked us.

If past performance of J. Smith is a predictor of future results, then I am looking forward to having a platoon of J. Smiths on the 2024 roster.
