Hoops Recruiting Has Family Ties
As promised, recruiting updates and evaluations will be more frequent with AAU in full swing and the dead period set to end in June. I've received word that Michigan is looking at a class of 3-4 for 2022 as of right now. Obviously this is fluid, considering the state of affairs in the portal and the extra year of eligibility granted to seniors. As a baseline, I think its safe to assume the Wolverines will take 1 true big, 1 true wing-forward, 1 playmaking guard and perhaps the best available talent if a fourth prospect is pursued.
Atlanta was the destination last weekend, as I attended the Sweet 16 event sponsored by On The Radar Hoops. This was Jett Howard's first appearance on the AAU scene in 2021, as he just completed his high school season with IMG Academy and what a debut it was.
Guards/Wings
Having viewed Jett Howard live three times since October, I have a good feel for his game and his trajectory. I was anxious to see him in a different setting with perhaps a more featured role, and the youngest Howard did not disappoint.
Suiting up for Nightrydas Elite (Nike EYBL), the 6'6 junior played more of an on-ball role as opposed to his primarily catch-and-shoot duties with a loaded IMG Academy team. Howard looked good as a shot-creator for himself, as he connected on multiple pull-ups after change of speed/direction dribbles and stepbacks. Perhaps more encouraging, Jett displayed some very nice flashes as a playmaker for others in ballscreen action and also thrived as a transition passer with some nifty bounce passes that resulted in easy layups/dunks.
There are some things he needs to tighten up. He has a tendency to dance with the ball without getting getting anywhere at times and has a bit too much air on some of his passes. But the overall take is that Howard is trending up as a viable on-ball option at the next level. Six months ago, Jett had the look of a catch and shoot wing that plays the PF spot at times. With this most recent evaluation, Howard is projecting more as a wing that is capable of handling shot-creation duties occasionally.
I'll get ahead of the curve here. Yes, I'm fully confident that Jett Howard will be part of Michigan's 2022 class.
File This Under Pursue Immediately
While he hasn't heard from Michigan as of yet, I would be remiss to not mention 2022 Emanuel Sharp of Bishop McLaughlin (FL)/E1T1 (EYBL). I've been higher on Sharp than anyone, having him ranked as 4-star prospect for nearly a year, but wanted to be cautious until seeing him against elite competition this weekend.
I'll keep this brief since Emanuel isn't on Michigan's board just yet, but I would easily take him as our lead-guard in 2022 over any of Jaden Bradley, Dug McDaniel or Seth Trimble (probably more SG). Range out to 30 feet, great playmaker for others, athleticism that absolutely defies what you may think in the layup line and great positional size at 6'4.
I'm guessing the staff will get eyes on him at some point soon, as E1T1 is based in Central Florida and will likely play Jett/Nightrydas Elite several times. It is absolutely negligent that mainstreams have him ranked in the 80-140 range. Sharp will likely debut as a 5-star prospect in my rankings come June/July. It's nearly impossible to watch and not think of a prospect that looks a lot like Talen Horton-Tucker with a better jumpshot at the same age.
[Hit THE JUMP for new film + intel on Wings and Bigs]
Wings/Forwards
2022 A.J. Casey is number two on my wing board (behind Jarace Walker) and he's inching closer toward being my top choice. Casey made his AAU debut with Meanstreets (Nike EYBL) earlier this month at the NY2LA Swish N' Dish and was very impressive.
The 5-star wing out of Chicago displayed all the tools you want to see. Perimeter shotmaking, explosiveness at the rim, occasional playmaking and high-level rim protection. At 6'8 with a developed frame he's going to be a kid that produces early in his collegiate career and I'd be very happy if that happened in Ann Arbor.
While he play things close to the vest with respect to his recruitment, Michigan is among the schools prioritizing him and Juwan's connections to Chicago obviously help here. I plan on seeing Casey soon and hope to have more intel on him in the coming weeks.
4-star offer Ty Rodgers lead his Grand Blanc (MI) team to a Division I state championship over the weekend. A great athlete with potential to be a premier defender in college, Michigan appears to be in good position here per this late-March piece with 247.
“A lot of (the schools) that have offered me are showing me a lot of love, but the main ones and head coaches that are reaching out is Michigan, Syracuse, Houston, Missouri and Marquette. Those are the main ones who have been reaching out to me personally the head coaches."
“It’s good (my bond with Coach Howard). I feel like he’s a great coach and a great person. He tries to reach out to me once or twice a week, but he does consistently, so that really stands out to me how consistent he is with everything. He’s a great guy."
Rodgers isn't as high on my wing board based on some of his offensive limitations, but there's no denying he fits the Juwan Howard mold of a rangy athlete that plays hard. In a program that has transitioned to more of a defensive-oriented identity, he would make a real impact as a defensive-stopper capable of defending three positions during any given game.
A few notes on some of the other 2022 wing offers. Once thought to be a near lock, Gregg Glenn (Calvary Christian HS/FL), is taking a bit too long to pull the trigger. I wouldn't be surprised if the staff makes contact this week to measure where exactly things stand and perhaps expedite the timeline.
Dallas-native Colin Smith will also be contacted by the staff this week. While not necessarily considered a lock, Smith has been prioritized by the staff for months and I get the feeling the staff may attempt to gain clarity relatively soon here with Smith's sister at Stanford along with former teammate and Michigan target Harrison Ingram.
Bigs
4-star offer Donovan Clingan is off to a strong start in his travel season for Team Spartans. He hasn't played the best competition just yet on the Hoop Group circuit, but his club figures to square-off against some of the heavy-hitters soon. That said, the skill here is quite obvious and the fit even moreso. As a 7'1 lefty, he has a great drop-step and touch at the basket. Remind you of anyone?
On the recruiting trail, this seems like a natural fit for a Juwan Howard team that loves to feature post-play and that resonates with Clingan per this February 247 article :
“It was big to get that offer. It's a big time school with a great coach. I hopped on a zoom call for two hours with the staff and it's just a blessing to get an offer from that school. Their message to me was that they see me fitting in well in their program, they like my game and they think I can make it big. They produce bigs very well and having coach Juwan as a coach is huge. He was a good big man himself so that factors in.”
While UConn has been rumored to be the front-runner here, I'd be inclined to think Michigan will be in a functional top group considering Donovan's skillset and Michigan's style of play. Definitely projects as a perfect marriage for both parties.

Matt -- Maybe a silly question -- any chance Juwan brings in Jett as a walk-on?
I know that was discussed for Jace before a spot opened up, but wondering if the same would apply for Jett
April 13th, 2021 at 12:31 PM ^
Another reason that Warde should give Juwan a raise
Yes because without a raise, no way can Juwan afford that tuition bill, right? LOL.
I think the greater point would be that Jett is a top-level recruit and deserves a scholarship.
but these days does it matter?
getting a scholarship outside the ego side of things he can help the team and another athlete attend Michigan, he certainly doesn't NEED a scholarship to pay the bills some of the kids need.
Hey, if Jett, as an 18 year old, elite recruit wants to walk-on so that another player can be added (and possibly take some of his minutes) then bravo. But I don't think that, even under the circumstances, it's fair to expect that, even if he does not NEED the scholarship.
Jace was slightly different because there was a question from some whether he would be getting a scholarship offer from Michigan absent a connection (he may still have but it was more borderline).
I think there are things that are available to scholarship players but not walk-ons (tutoring, nutrition, etc). At least there used to be. So I don't think you have a kid walk-on even if they are well off
CONTEXT is important here,
I would bet his parents can get him a tutor if needed & make sure he eats well.
you can't act like he is a player that NEEDS a scholarship to get by when his father has millions in the bank and can afford all life has to offer.

This is true, but it's not necessarily tutoring or nutrition*
*nutrition in the sense of fuel stations and whatnot.
However, walk-ons do have to pay for their own meals during certain times of the year. So I guess that would be filed under nutrition. It's minimal, but let's say football doesn't report until August 1, but guys start coming back to get physicals, condition a little, etc.
Walk-ons won't get meal money until the 1st when the season starts.
That said, Jett Howard won't be hurting for a meal.
Walk-ons sometimes get left behind on road trips or aren't part of travel rosters during tournaments in some sports, but that's because they typically don't play and you can't only have (x) number of players on the bench, not because there's a rule.
I am not 100% sure but I think NCAA rules actually prevent him from coming in as walk on. Because his father is the coach he will count against a scholarship. I served on a university's athletic committee and should remember it, but once my term expired I forgot everything. Just like my students.
April 13th, 2021 at 11:03 PM ^
That doesn't make sense though. What if he wasn't a D1 player and was a true walk-on level talent.
Which happens all the time, especially in football.
He wouldn't get to play for his dad because his dad would have to use a scholarship on him and he's not worth one?
That's not the case here, but the scenario happens all the time.
I would think if it was clear that the kiddo doesn’t have the chops to play at that level they’d prefer going to a lesser in-state school - wmu or msu or some such - versus living with the perception that the only reason they’re on the team is nepotism.
Cheers.
April 14th, 2021 at 11:13 AM ^
How on earth would you enforce this? What if they have no offers anywhere else?
Seems like this is a decision for the Howard's to make on their own.
Non-scholarship players don't always have access to all the resources that scholarship players do. Jett clearly deserves a scholarship, so denying that to him so that the team can have more overall talent would have to be something Juwan and Jett agreed to to help out the team, but they shouldn't be expected to do it.

Matt, I’m looking at the 2022 roster and there are currently 2 open spots. If you remove Franz and Hunter, that makes 4. That’s not even counting Diabate or Houston being one and done. I could see this as a 5-6 person class easily.
Hunter is not a guarantee to go pro next year. He'll have to develop away from the basket and his right hand to be considered in the first round (definitely possible, but offseason will answer questions about that). Both Houstan and Diabate could also stay more than 1 year. I know both are 5 star prospects but oddly, neither are considered guaranteed one and dones. Diabate, especially since he'll be the backup to both Johns and Dickinson.
I just feel like Hunters age will start to work against him at some point. He’s older for a freshman. I really feel like next year will be it regardless. I can see the other two as two and done as well. I really hope this is what we get going forward. Five star players for two years would be awesome. Either way I can see a class of 4. I think this is the new norm for us.
I can easily see it being a 5 man class as well, but I'm told the tentative plan is 3-4 as of now. I'm guessing that number is impacted by anticipating some potential incoming transfer(s).
That is good to know. Sounds like we may be looking more at some under classmen transfers and not so much the one year rental types (which worked out just fine as well).
More of an adoption than a rental

Fantastic update.
All of the players covered seem to be spectacular, exciting prospects. Jett looks like the real deal, an excellent shooter/ball handler/passer, a shot creator for himself and others. Sharp, Clingan, Casey, Rodgers etc. all seem to be skilled elite prospects. An athletic 5 star guard? A premier shotmaking, explosive 5 star wing? Another great athlete with the potential to be a premier defender? A skilled 7'1 big? Wow. If we land all our top targets, this will be another monster class.
I would say monster classes are the expectation under Juwan.
Matt, what's your stock report on Isaiah Barnes since his transfer to Simeon?
I didn't get to see him live, unfortunately. From the games I was able to take in via film, there's a lot to like there. A better shooter than given credit for and extremely explosive.
You see this yet?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7geOaFQ3qA
Kid is definitely the underrated commit of the Michigan class.
Yeah he is going to be fun to watch. I'm hoping to see him break out in year 2 the way we all hoped Brandon Johns would. He has a smooth stroke, good handle, and looks like a bouncy athlete. This video just confirms that he has a mean streak in the lane, which is one of my favorite attributes in the world
Matt, great write up. Always appreciate these updates on the basketball targets.
I was wondering if you know where we stand with Jalen Duren? I know that Rivals futurecast was put in awhile ago, but was that just a shot in the dark?
Came to ask the same thing.
I never say never, but I wouldn't get my hopes up with Duren. And I believe that to be equally applicable to all college options.
Sharpe looks like a monster. His ability to finish and shoot the ball is rare.
Watching his clips I was saying to myself "hmmm, Sharp is a smaller and a quick SG, but he releases the ball pretty low, could be an issue next level if my 6ft assumption is correct"
Look him up..."oh he is 6'4?!?! cool lets get him".
Bunch of trees out there makin him look smaller than he is. Do want!

That kid was kickin names and taking ass in the state playoffs down here
Good stuff. Jett looks like a really fluid player with the ball in his hands and it's nice to see his game evolve a bit.
Rogers looks like the type of guy Howard could make work immediately as an energy/defensive guy off the bench.
This is a more general question but is Chicago as, um, McDonald's-bag-heavy as I remember it being some years ago? I'm not naive enough to believe anything in basketball recruiting is clean, but just wondering how realistic my expectations should be about Casey, even with the Howard Chicago connection.
Apropos of nothing but man, those AAU games are packed with people. I didn't quite realize how close to the court the crowd got.

I thought the same thing watching Jett's highlights.
He has a pretty tight handle for a 6"6'ish wing from what I can see and also seems to have really good vision as a passer. Pretty good looking jumper as well off the dribble. None of the "coach's kid" stuff on those highlights. He looks like he can really play.
Thank you as always Matt, your level of access and talent evaluation is incredibly rare and very appreciated! Where would Gregg Glenn and Colin Smith for on your wing wish list? If we have a shot at some other targets would you slow play them or are they immediate take types?
My Wing Board:
Tier 1
1) Jarace Walker
2) AJ Casey
Tier 2
3) Eric Dailey
4) Colin Smith
Tier 3
5) Ty Rodgers
6) Gregg Glenn
The way college basketball is now would you be shooting for a tier 1 player for talent and a tier 3 player for continuity or just shoot for the best you can get regardless?
I see a lot of Livers in Jett's game.
Would any of these players be on Beilein's recruiting boards?
Jett Howard would certainly be an early wave of Junior offer by John Beilein. He fits the profile as a skilled shooter plus he's a son of the NBA player. I think Juwan would try to push Jett to Michigan if he can.
I assume he is playing for us
He hasn't been recruited all that hard right now because Jett is pretty much a stone cold lock to commit to Michigan. Word is he has been recruiting his teammates and other players to Michigan. Jett wanted to get recruited and get schmoozed but it's hard to get that treatment for the reasons above.
Right. Who is going to waste time and energy on Juwan Howard's son? Just not worth it. There is no way he's going anywhere else.
Thanks Matt.
Always excited to see the next prospects. Interesting that you see Sharp as your biggest target as the PG, as I had thought Dug was on top of the list (despite his size limitations).
Very impressed with Sharp's film however...he would definitely be a great recruit for Michigan to prioritize
Emanuel Sharp - definitely a yes. The spin move on one of the baskets was incredible. Love his shooting range too.
Thanks, Matt. I was definitely assuming a class of more like 4-5. Given your breakdown ("1 true big, 1 true wing-forward, 1 playmaking guard"), would Jett be a wing-forward (thus potentially taking guys like Casey, Glenn, Walker off the table), or would he be a playmaking guard (thus taking guys like Dug or Trimble off the table) in a 3 person class?
Jett is interesting because he's trending toward being a 2/3 rather than a 3/4. I definitely don't think he would preclude any of the Casey/Glenn/Walker/Smith/Rodgers group.
It could be that we're talking about a 3-4 man class in ADDITION to Jett.
It could be that we're talking about a 3-4 man class in ADDITION to Jett.
I think this is the most appropriate consideration. Jett has that interesting feel where he could fit into multiple lineups at various roles; being a good shooter with a smooth stroke allows him to be a 2 with size, his ability to put it on the deck and pull up really opens him up to play at the 3 and the 4 is available with his size in a small ball look where someone like Johns is a 5. He could be a really special 4 year contributor here for us.
I really like Rodgers game. I would love to see him blue. It baffles me why Izzo is not all over him? He is the typical Izzo instate recruit.
Jett showed me more in that short clip than he did watching hours of IMG play. Impressive.
Clingan looks like what John Navarre would look like on a basketball court.
Apparently, his dad is a Michigan fan even though Ty Rodgers is J-Rich's nephew. Plus, I believe he's a cousin of Tug Bowen so something happened between Izzo and Tug Bowen recruitment that caused them to sour on Izzo and MSU FWIW.
I'm told Jett Howard's dad is also a Michigan fan
