[Yohan Traore]

Hoops Recruiting Is Extending Hospitality Comment Count

Matt EM September 21st, 2021 at 3:00 PM

Michigan has filled the 2022 class with the PG of the future in Dug McDaniel along with another top-tier big in Tarris Reed. With Jett Howard likely to hop aboard relatively soon, the Wolverines are homing in on a select few prospects to round out the class.

With football season in full swing, visit season is upon us and this is where we weed out serious mutual interest from lip-service. All the latest below.

Getting Serious

5-star Yohan Traore will make his way to Ann Arbor for an official visit this weekend. Michigan made a final ten last month, but this is confirmation of serious interest considering official visits are at a premium for both parties involved.

Yohan took an OV to Texas Tech last weekend, but little else is known about this recruitment beyond that and legit information has been hard to come by. What I do know is that Traore simultaneously fits the criteria for best available talent, depth in the frontcourt and just enough skill + mobility to be a big wing/PF type.

The staff will undoubtedly roll out the red carpet and make the pitch for him to be a power-forward and it will be an honest pitch with Tarris Reed already in the mix. While getting Yohan in for an OV is a significant development, I get the vibe this recruitment is a long ways from being over and I'd be a bit surprised if he signs during the early period.

Circling Back Around

I was first to report that 4-star Colin Smith will be on campus for an OV starting this Friday. After being a secondary option for much of the last six months, Smith has to be considered a priority now with Michigan using valuable resources by allocating a precious OV.

This is an interesting recruitment, with Colin and the Wolverines being hot and cold with one another over the last two years. Accepted wisdom had Smith as a Stanford lean with his sister a volleyball player in Palo Alto and former HS/AAU teammate Harrison Ingram a freshman on the basketball team. A source on the Stanford side indicates that they have cooled a bit on Colin and he may not be a take depending on how things shake out with their priority prospects.

Smith took an second official visit to Vanderbilt over the weekend and Jerry Stackhouse has been a constant in this recruitment. He also hit Arizona State for an OV during Labor Day weekend. Those two are obviously legit options as well. That said, I think Michigan wins this recruitment if they want to. The question becomes whether he's a take at this point in tandem with the staff's feel on other options.

[Hit THE JUMP for the full rundown]

The Curious Case of Gregg Glenn

Top-150 wing/forward Gregg Glenn was in town over the weekend for an official visit and played it close to the vest when Rivals asked about a potential commitment:

"No comment on the committing part yet."

Glenn has a final five of Michigan, Virginia Tech, Iona, Georgia and USF. It's well known at this point the competition here is only window-dressing given the longstanding family ties to the Howards. The only question is whether Gregg is a take. The fact that he made it out of the weekend without a commitment is telling. For what its worth there was a rumor swirling months ago that Jett + Gregg could potentially be announcing their college destinations together. Again, nothing from reputable sources here so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm inclined to think the staff will go all out for Traore and give that some time before putting a committable offer on the table for Glenn, but that is my speculation as opposed to objective reporting. Glenn confirms he has no other visits scheduled, so it appears he's content to wait.  How things trend with Colin Smith in the aftermath of this weekend's visit may reveal a lot about the hierarchy here.

The Jett Is Close To Landing

Top-40 wing Jett Howard made his way to Ann Arbor last weekend for his official visit with the aforementioned Glenn. The youngest Howard gave standard fluff to Rivals in the aftermath, but nothing in terms of a decision timeline.

Having completed trips to Tennessee, N.C. State and Michigan, Georgetown will shoot their shot this weekend. I'm not going to pretend as if I believe this is a real battle, as I'm told the expectation is for Jett to make his pledge to the Wolverines in the coming weeks after his visit tour concludes. There is potential for him to take a fifth OV, but at this point I expect him to sign with Michigan during the early signing period in November.

Don't Like The Trend

4-star forward Ty Rodgers was near the top of the board in June and seemed primed to be Michigan's first commit of 2022 on the heels of an official visit. Fast-forward three months and things have changed a lot here.

Ty is fresh off an OV to Illinois and Illini HC Brad Underwood is expected to be in for him today.  I can tell you with certainty that Rodgers has become a major priority for Illinois with Cam Whitmore looking Nova-bound. Assistant coach Tim Anderson has serious ties to the Meanstreets EYBL program and it is paying dividends on the recruiting trail.

Additionally, Michigan State has been ramping things up and Ty will take an official visit to East Lansing next weekend. There are family ties to the Spartans so one has to assume they will be in it until the end.

I confirm Michigan is still in pursuit here, but probably not to the same extent we saw in the Spring. Ty seems like he's less than 50/50 to join the class at this point.

Thanks Matt. Things seem to be shaking out as I would expect. A couple questions:

  • Is Traore still a possibility to enter the 2022 Draft (and potentially bypass college)?
  • Any idea whom we would prefer between Glenn and Smith if Traore is off the table?

Traore may indeed be a possibility to bypass college in its entirety by pursuing professional options (GLeague, OTE, Overseas) or enter the NBA draft, but the draft possibility isn't as clear right now.

The staff has mixed reviews amongst each other concerning both Glenn and Smith. Personally, I'd prefer Smith.

Matt, thanks for this long awaited update. What is the deal with Colin Smith's mainstream ranking? I think you've said you have him as a mid top 100 kid and he reminds me a guy who can have a very similar career trajectory to Livers, but mainstream recruiting sites have him as almost a 3 star

Traore waiting until the spring and possibly going to the nba could really hamper teams from closing out their class at the power forward spot. Assuming Jett is on board, you may only have one spot left and if Glenn or Smith are willing to jump on board, can Michigan afford to wait on Traore until April?

Traore is the priority here-by a country mile. His ability to play inside and out makes his ceiling close to that of Lively. I absolutely love how he plays the game. The way he leans into his defender just the correct amount on the inside, his ability to put the ball on the floor and then put the icing on the cake with that sweet stroke from deep-not to mention being a defensive enforcer...makes his floundering as a worse than top 50 prospect for so long laughable. Yohan's floor and ceiling are about the same.

Hopefully/surely Jett joins the good guys. The other three are nice players-auditioning in hopes that Traore doesn't commit. Juwan can win with any of them.

I just cannot fathom why a big like Traore would want to be coached by anyone other than Juwan. We've already seen what he did with Davis, who wasn't even playable before Juwan arrived. Then he took a middle of the road 4* big and turned him into a player of the year candidate. Then there's the 2 decades of NBA experience. And the connections. And on and on and on...

I really hope we pull it off, but don't want to be strung along forever & then get stung in the end.

If Rodgers doesn't end up at Michigan I hope he goes somewhere other than Sparty. I've said this before: He seems like the kind of guy you don't want to see on the other team, even if he's limited in some ways (e.g., shooting).

Also, whatever happens with Glenn I hope his family and Howard's family stay friends. Somewhat touchy situation there ...

Matt - Any thoughts on the recent MSU forward commit?

Also I agree with BlueHeron (above) re: MSU and Ty Rodgers but would prefer didn't go to Illinois either...

I've seen a TON of Kohler over the last 1.5 years. Short Eval - excellent footwork/back-to-basket scorer, capable of stepping out and hitting 3s, good high-low entry passer, below-average/poor athlete, only legit 6'7 - 6'8. Fundamental question is whether he can survive on defense enough to allow his offensive skills to shine. To be candid, he's not equipped to protect the rim in drop coverage and he's not agile enough to be switchable on the perimeter. Imagine Garza at 6'7-6'8 rather than 7'1...........

Kohler is more post/paint oriented and much better in that regards in terms of being a footwork technician/back-to-basket scorer. Tschetter is a better ballhandler that can attack in a straight line off closeouts against traditional bigs. Both are limited athletes that can shoot the ball.

The big distinction is that Kohler has produced fairly well against much better competition on the EYBL circuit. It goes a long way.

Another sign they are full court press for traore I think is Tarris Reed is also visiting. Will give them a chance to meet each other, etc

thanks Matt.

getting Yohan on campus is huge...hopefully, the visit will open up his eyes. Definitely hoping Moussa is his host during his official visit.

Crossing my fingers here!

3 months ago, Yohan was #94 in the 247 composite. As of a week ago, he's a 5-star, top 10 player. No doubt he wants to see what possibilities there are/what options are going to be available to him. It's great that the OV is happening and hope we make a good impression - there's no world where choosing UM would be a bad decision - but this kid's world is opening up as we speak

so I assume that michigan's priority with the bigs is in the order laid out in the article.  traore, smith, glenn?  would juwan wait out a possible commitment or traore vs. taking immediate commitments from the others?
