Exit Ahmir Mitchell Comment Count

That didn't last long:

Mitchell got in serious trouble over the summer that warranted what was probably going to be a year-long suspension. He was also apparently in the habit of posting images of him partying at various late-night hours on Snapchat. By all reports he was not a good fit for the program.

Privately we were expecting this, and I tried to gesture that direction in his recruiting profile:

General Excitement Level: Moderate-minus. Washout potential is high. Pure athlete at the moment.

And lo, it has come to pass. Dude could have sped it up a bit so that I didn't have to write that profile.

Even though he was nominally a receiver, Mitchell's departure is mostly a hit to the safety depth chart. Michigan really likes the McDoom/Crawford/Johnson trio and with Brad Hawkins an academic casualty both WR recruits who could play S have burned out before they could even get started.

That brings Michigan to 23 scholarships in a class we expect to reach 30.

And for Ahmir, it's better to happen early. He's acquiring some maturity that may help him down the road. I do question whether from his perspective he would have benefitted by riding out the mistakes and remaining in A^2. Good luck young man.

Hope he gets it turned around. Mostly just hoping him plus Hawkins washing out so quickly doesn't hurt NJ recruiting.

Don't like having bad stuff around the program before such a promisisng season though, hope the news starts turning around soon and we hear the team is having a great time, guys are stepping up, etc.

I recently caught myself considering with mild concern the state of our New Jersey pipeline.  I had to remind myself that it doesn't matter.  I'm sure Urban Meyer has relationships, but Ohio State can pull anyone from anywhere.  Same with Alabama and seemingly Clemson right now.  If Michigan Football becomes what we expect it to become, nothing will ever be off limits.

All of a sudden those WR's numbers make sense... Honestly wondering if the staff knew something could go wrong with Mitchell and Hawkins, While those guys clearly had vaule at WR or Safety they did bring in enough talent to fill their spots if it didn't work. In addition the staff knew their chances with DPJ and Nico Collins.

Seems like we are pretty well protected against this even though it is very disappointing.

I hope he has a school lined up and can start there next month.  (I think he has to sit out a year since he signed an LOI.)  I really hope he doesn't miss the chance to get a degree from somewhere.

I feel bad for Mitchell because there is nowhere else that can give him the 4 year experience he would have received in Ann Arbor.

There was an interview recently where coach walked out due to some annoying questions about suspensions and what not. Does this action help to clarify the situation any for some of you?

I am sure coach knows he is doing.  If he is  bringing  in 30 kids a year there is bound to be some fall out.  Better now in the freshman  year with non nonofficial charge than au upper class man  with criminal charges like what ND is going thru now.

Jim Harbaugh is making these young men into a hard-nosed football team they practice 4 hours a real football game takes 4 hours from warm ups to the game is about 4 hours. So your team has to be able to smash-mouth football for 4 hours. Michigan football lines up and strong formations with tight ends fullbacks and they are all blockers first and foremost. The team that smashes the other in the mouth time and time again usually wins the four-hour battle. We are going to win a lot of football games in the future and if Jim Harbaugh stays around we will have a national championship his football teams lay the effin wood....
