2023 Spring Game Instant Takes Comment Count

Alex.Drain April 1st, 2023 at 6:33 PM

Team Maize defeated Team Blue down at the Big House today in Michigan Football's 2022 Spring Game by a final score of 22-21, winning on a two-point conversion and an ultimate fourth down defensive stand. The weather was cold and chilly and Michigan was without the likes of stars Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, but a number of young players and new additions made themselves felt in the narrative of the game. What does it ultimately mean? Probably very little! Do I still have takes on it? Of course! Here's a short collection of instant takes, before Seth and Brian comb through the tape this week:

OFFENSE

Peyton O'Leary IS Cooper Kupp. By the time O'Leary snatched the game-winning two point pass, he was already becoming the player of the game, but his closing heroics for Team Maize cemented it. O'Leary was catching balls from both JJ McCarthy and Davis Warren, finding ways to get himself open all game long, including when (often) matched up on Amorion Walker, recipient of so much spring praise. O'Leary was the most notable receiver on the field and the most notable player in the game's narrative arc, so he gets our imaginary MVP award for today.

Run, Jack, Run!! Maybe the most notable element of transfer QB Jack Tuttle's game that stood out today was the willingness and inclination to run the ball. The newcomer from Indiana by way of Utah got the start for Team Blue and from the very first play of the game, Tuttle was comfortable running with it. That play was designed to give him the chance to keep it, but he was also scrambling while on the run quite often too, and looked plausible at doing it. He had a couple nice throws (one to AJ Barner down the seam) and one ugly decision (a backfoot heave under pressure that was INT'd), but for me it was the mobility that I was intrigued by the most.

Benjamin Hall's hello. Hall, a burly RB out of Georgia, was perhaps the most controversial recruit in the 2023 class, an early take by Mike Hart with low recruiting rankings who slipped down his HS depth chart during the course of his senior season. Was Hart stupid to take Hall, or had Michigan found a diamond in the rough? The answer varied depending on who you talked to and it will be years before we know the real answer, but at least for today, Mike Hart has to be pleased with what he saw. Hall looked like possibly the best back on the field today, a game that did include older RBs Tavierre Dunlap and Kalel Mullings, picking up what the OL was giving him and accelerating in the open field for a near-long TD (he punched it in from the goal line two snaps later). There probably won't be too many non-Corum/Edwards snaps this season and it's a crowded depth chart of players vying for what remains, but Hall made a loud opening statement today.

Interior OL plowing. I thought the group of Raheem Anderson, Gio El-Hadi, and Karsen Barnhart were excellent opening up rushing room for Kalel Mullings and Hall for Team Blue. It's hard to tell live who they were going up against (that's where a rewatch will be most useful), but they were opening holes with decent frequency. I didn't notice the IOL on Team Maize as much but for the decently experienced maulers on Team Blue, it was a good showing. I liked Anderson in particular on first watch, but again, that's subject to change upon further review.

Your regularly scheduled JJ update. I know everyone who didn't see the game mostly wants to hear about JJ McCarthy so I will indulge you, even if it's not terribly interesting. JJ was wearing a white jersey, which seemed to indicate he may play QB for both teams, like Cade McNamara did last year, but he ended up playing only for Team Maize. JJ looked fine, comfortable throwing on the move and mostly like the player we've seen before.. He overthrew a receiver, leading to an interception, but his day ended on a sweet TD pass to Jake Thaw at the end of the first half. Not much else to say.

DEFENSE

CB2 candidates flash traits but not completeness. The various candidates for the second outside corner spot all had moments that may indicate a good future player, but it appeared that no one is quite there yet. Ja'Den McBurrows may have been the most impressive, with a great open field tackle on a bubble screen, but we should note he was playing more nickel than outside corner. Walker was playing outside corner and got beaten often by O'Leary in the second half, but Walker found himself in position quite a bit, which is the big first step. Finishing PBUs/not being too handsy were more of the issue, and he did drop a tailor-made interception he had in the bread basket. Myles Pollard had an INT when Davis Warren missed the hole shot as well. Long story short: a lot of players had moments, but no one yet looks like a stud. Luckily, they have many months to continue improving.

EDGE defenders have a nice day. As a whole for both teams, the EDGE defenders soundly won their battles against the offensive tackles today. Coastal Carolina transfer Josiah Stewart was probably the most dominant, getting around the corner and causing havoc in a way that was noticeable. Sophomore Derrick Moore also had a strong game, seeming to have made some amount of improvement in the offseason. I also scribbled down Kechaun Bennett for a stop and Kris Jenkins, when playing, had a couple plays that jumped off the screen coming around the edge too.

Kenneth Grant, you have my attention. We've got some clips here:

And again:

Yes one of those was against Dominik Guidice and yes I don't care. Men that size who can do things like that are fun. One more note about younger DTs: I thought Rayshaun Benny had a strong day too for Team Maize.

Various linebackers did various linebacker things. I don't have anything too cohesive for this point but linebackers popped up in my notes here and there so I wanted to shout them out. Nikhai Hill-Green got toasted by Matt Hibner on a long catch and run mesh route that would've been a TD had Hibner not fallen over, but NHG also stuffed Davis Warren on a 4th & Goal keeper. Ernest Hausmann popped up for a great open field tackle, Jimmy Rolder delivered a hit on a scrambling Jack Tuttle that I'd prefer not to see in an exhibition game, and Micah Pollard brought heat up the gut on a blitz on one snap I noted.

Keshaun Harris makes the big play. Defensive MVP in this game, or at least the guy who made the highest leverage play if we're pretending this was a game that meant anything, was Keshaun Harris. On 4th down with the game on the line, Harris read the Team Blue pass a mile away, jumped the route, and delivered the game-ending PBU. Congratulations to the walk-on grad student for sealing the (meaningless) glory.

BONUS TAKES

Get better nameplates for future spring games. The letters on the nameplates of the jerseys today were flying off in the breeze. At one point Josiah Stewart's last name was down to "Stewa" and several other players had letters peeling off. I know it's an exhibition game but don't we have money for jerseys that don't look like they were purchased off a shady Chinese website for one quarter the price of official team apparel?

A new meme is born. Donovan Edwards wasn't playing but he may have given us the most memorable moment from today:

Move over Leonardo DiCaprio, we have a new pointing meme in town.

Jake Thaw plays hide-and-seek. This year's version of Darrius Clemons pulling out the phone for the group selfie was Thaw catching the TD from McCarthy and trying to hide behind the goalpost. I have to assume Thaw is calling this celebration "the easter egg".

My quick thoughts:

 - Jake Tuttle didn't get the white jersey and will be sore tomorrow

 - Benjamin Hall - dude can play and would be my early pick to be RB3.

 - I was hoping to see a couple FG attempts to see what we have to replace Moody.

 - NHG is finally healed.  Nice to see him out there.  LB room will be deep.

 - Devin Gardner - you're at a 10.  Might want to dial it back to a 7 or 8.

 - Atteberry - sweet haircut.  I also like your intensity.

 - Big # 78 Kenneth Grant - yessir!

Overall, fun 4th quarter to watch and it would appear that everyone came out healthy.  Lots of good players out there.  This team should have plenty of depth.

Ben Hall looks like thiccc Mike Hart.  Not the breakaway speed guy but patience and vision. This Hart fella might know a thing or two about identifying running backs.  Might surprise us as more than a RB3 - he falls forward, and has vision we were hoping the D. Green's of the world would have.

A. Walker has a lot - a LOT - to learn.  Really handsy.  Hopefully tempers some expectations as the board was starting to get him into Prime FSU territory before he took a real snap this year.  As Mikey S said on broadcast "it's gonna take time".  But much like old friend Channing Stribling he was in the right position most of the time - just the last moment in that position a lot of ... interesting things.

McBurrows impressed and in the end we need 3-4 valid CBs for injury reasons.

Agree on DG - he makes Gus Johnson and Dick Vitale seem like wallflowers.  Holy smoke he has an uplifting personality but any introvert in his presence would be sucked of life within 5 minutes hah.

Butt has a good presence for TV but misread some #s out there.

Stop with the damn split screen other than 2x a game.

Our DL looks really good, excited to see them.  That Moore fella looks ready for that SO leap.  NHG made some nice plays at LB and yes the one bust.

Orgi actually looked ... promising?... as a thrower.  He placed balls better than Tuttle in my opinion.  Tuttle's completions were often a yard off, behind, too low, etc.  Maybe it's unfamiliarity with his teammates but if he is going to be QB2 that's got to get cleaned up by fall.  Luckily we have some cupcakes early to see who is going to win that job but JJ should be in bubble wrap next 3 months.

The walk on Harris (I think LB?) made some plays.

Our TE room just reloads.

Most of the sophomore type WRs ex Peyton seemed meh.  Glad CoJo returned.

You could tell DG and Butt enjoyed each other. Butt seemed even more chill compared to DG because he was watching the instant replay on run plays to identify the relevant blocks. Both have bright broadcasting futures.

I think it was great to have DG at high energy. He dialed it back for the games he covered for Fox, but for his home team, he can be as excitable as he wants to be.

DG needs to dial down the 5 hour energy drinks before going on the air.  It's the same when he's on WTKA.  He becomes unlistenable sometimes and I have to just turn off the radio.  He lapsed into that a few times Saturday and I think it makes him less credible to an impartial listener.  It's too bad because he has a lot of great insights and knowledge.

I went back and read Ben Hall's Hello post and it'd be interesting to see an update with his senior year footage.  His jr. year looked good and showed a lot of the skills he showed today.  It also showed him getting run down in the open field a bit.  But I'll take consistent 8, 10, 20 yard runs all day from a back that has power and vision over a twig who will get knocked over in the hole.

He makes really strong cuts, has quick feet and puts his foot in the ground to generate power.  He's easily the most advanced at reading his blockers among all but the top 2 RBs.  And he has the acceleration to get meaningful yards as he squeezes through the hole.  He might not be the home run hitter that Donovan and Blake are, but there's nothing wrong with being Mike Hart 2.0.

He even looked good catching the ball and picking up blitzes.  I fully expect him to RB3 this year and RB2 next year depending on whether or not Donovan leaves early.

I really appreciate how much fun the guys seem to be having out there. The way Harbaugh orchestrates the rules and allows it to still be fun is wonderful to see

The offense whether it be the Maize or Blue team went up against a good defense on either the Maize of the Blue. Very few upcoming defenses will be as good as ours.

I liked the INTs that happened. There could have been one or two more if not for dropping the ball. Also remember, Cornelius Johnson had one catch then went to the sidelines. Donovan did not play as well as Blake Corum. JJ played a half and looked a lot better on his last series.

So if the offense didn't look that good it's because the defense did it's job. The bottom line is Michigan played against Michigan.

I hope Ben Hall continues to make haters eat crow. I don't know how many posters said Hart was a trash recruiter specifically because he took Hall.

A whole lot of people are rushing to delete their past comments on Hall. And while I get that his recruiting ranking and him getting benched were concerning, his film was always pretty solid. Big back who bounces off tackles, makes good decisions, and has burst but not elite speed. Hart is proving people wrong again and Hall could realistically see some snaps

Who was the back that was starting? Anybody know?

edit: Hall split time with an all purpose back named David Mbadinga who was getting D1 offers and signed with Georgia Southern. Mbadinga, 5’7”, had been injured his entire Sophomore and junior seasons and he likely deserved some extra Senior run.

This looks less and less like a knock on Hall.  Two D1 backs on a really good HS team.

Ok, but I swear I read posters here acting like he was benched his Senior year.

Which isn't too far from saying Barry sucked because he rode the bench at Oklahoma State.  You kind of need the rest of the story.  Hall wasn't even benched from what I have read, he merely split time his Senior year with another future college back.  Michigan State was actually recruiting Hall's teammate at one point.

I thought Zeke Berry made a number of nice plays.  The hit that separated the ball that Team Blue challenged late in particular, but I also recall him having a nice open field tackle and I think he had a pick that was brought back because of penalty (an easy one, but still in the right place).  Feels like he can provide some safety depth behind Moore and Paige and maybe Moten.

My notes from watching:

  • FR RB Benjamin Hall looked good. Great patience and balance when running

  • QB Orji looked really good imo. Great size, speed and appeared to have good touch with the ball. Hopefully we’ll see him in red zone packages this fall.

  • WR O’Leary was making plays all day. Good to see that we’ll have some depth this year.

  • CB Amorian Walker physically looks the part but needs more time. It was a little disappointing of a performance but only because all the hype we have been hearing all spring.

  • All of the TE looked great to me. Loveland has put some more weight on, hopefully it doesn’t slow him down.

  • DL was massive. Excited to see what they do this fall.

  • QB depth in general feels good. Between Tuttle, Davis & Orji, we should be OK.

  • CB Jyaire Hill looked great. He also delivered the boom on a screen

Coaches often make the mistake of valuing tools and perceived potential over the ability to actually make plays. Many of us were interested in seeing how the Uber talented Walker would do, but what we actually saw was O’Leary dominating him. He repeatedly got open and caught everything thrown his way, including some tough ones. #81 needs to see the field. He’s a player.

If O'leary is real and good enough to get significant game time this fall then I'll be pleasantly surprised. But, as it stands, Michigan's WR room is lacking. CoJo and Roman are both good, but they top out as B-tier receivers individually. None of the young bucks look ready to fill big shoes this fall. And of course Henning has never broken out. I'm still adamant that one final outside receiver is necessary from the transfer portal to complete this offense. Two of Michigan's best targets from last year are gone (Bell and Schoon) and we only have a replacement for one of them (Loveland). After spring practices finish around the country, there will likely be some late portal entries and I hope the staff takes a look at all the WRs that enter.

Jtre1212

April 2nd, 2023 at 4:28 PM ^

We'll be fine at WR. We run a bunch of 12 personnel anyway where it will just be Roman, CJ, Loveland, and Barner on the field. Also we have to let guys develop and step up. We can't bring in a transfer every time we have a position that doesn't have an immediate replacement that has had a lot of playing time. Tyler Morris, Darrius Clemons, and AJ Henning were all top 150 players in the country. Lets give them an opportunity to show us what they can do with significant snaps.

Also I don't really agree that CJ and Roman have showed us their ceilings but lets just say they have. We have the 2 best backs in the country , the best offensive line in the country, a top 10 QB in the country, and an upcoming superstar at TE. If our WRs are B tier we will be just fine imo lol.

I’m just glad there wasn’t a fight in the tunnel.

Also, did anyone lose notice they added 3 minutes to the clock at about 7:32 in the third quarter?
