A. Chengelis: Michigan, Miles expected to meet Tuesday
Angelique (Detroit Free Press) has put out an update this evening (morning?) stating that a source has told the paper that Michigan will meet with Miles on Tuesday:
ESPN.com reported Saturday night that according to sources, Michigan has expressed interest in talking to Miles. They are expected to meet on Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Detroit News on Sunday.

ESPN is not the source.

Wow Miles looks taller on TV.

I get neg'd for attempting a joke at the expense of the MSM in the middle of the night.

Angelique is usually credible.

Unless the pimp hand says it, I no longer believe anything.
January 10th, 2011 at 2:40 AM ^
Now, this makes some sense to me because NONE OF THE OTHER DAYS WORK FOR MEETINGS. JUST TUESDAY. OTHER DAYS ARE FOR PAPERWORK.

Chili's has the Awesome Blossom. I've seen men eat the entire thing by themselves. Thus causing me to want to throw up.
January 10th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
Les Miles can eat an entire Awesome Blossom in under three minutes.
He has never thrown up. Ever.

Step 1. Did Brandon say it?
Step 2. No.
Step 3. It's probably bullshit.
January 10th, 2011 at 4:05 AM ^
If this is indeed a bullshit rumor, Les will have an excellent opportunity to refute it at the 11 am (central) Patrick Peterson NFL draft announcement press conference.

I'm sure LM will be on the to interview list. I wonder if JB met with JG already? I'm sure BH and a few others will get interviewed for the job! LC was interviewed at his winter home in SC on Saturday.
I would like to get interviewed on Friday during happy hour!

Brandon to spend tomorrow eating jambalaya on the tarmac in the MGoSoulPlane?
January 10th, 2011 at 3:22 AM ^
Unfortunately it's not Angelique reporting via her own sources or I might trust it. Of the traditional reporters she's the one I trust.

How fantastic. At this rate maybe we'll actually have a head coach by the spring. Perhaps this drawn out process is DB's clever method of making Miles (or Hoke?) appear to be a really exciting prospect. Judging from my own emotional transformation and the general tenor of the mgoboards, DB's plan appears to be already having some success.
January 10th, 2011 at 3:39 AM ^
Just get it the hell over with.
January 10th, 2011 at 3:55 AM ^
Shit that's too far away. What the hell will we do all day tomorrow?

I saw this "bombing" (non-literal) of a Michigan jet on the Tiger Droppings website..thought it was kind of funny...first post on the page. Second post is funny also...Barksdale AFB is just outside of Shreveport and used to be a big B-52 base...stayed there once.

I think it's interesting that Chengelis never uses the word "interview" in her story, instead saying that Brandon and Miles "are expected to meet on Tuesday." I realize the story carries this headline--"Michigan AD is expected to interview LSU's Les Miles this week"-- but newspaper writers typically don't write the headlines on their stories.
This may seem like a matter of semantics, but there are people connected with LSU who seem pretty confident that Miles wants to stay at LSU, and a story from late last night on the Times-Picayune website makes me think that both sides might prefer that this meeting not be characterized as an interview in case Miles says "no" (or, perhaps, Michigan doesn't offer him the job):
The person close to the situation at LSU acknowledged that Miles might be willing to talk to his alma mater, but that he was more likely see[k]ing a way not to embarrass Michigan by turning down the job.
"My impression is that he'd like to say 'No,' without saying 'No,'" he said. "He doesn't want to be on the list of people who turned him (Brandon) down."
Setting aside the issue of what this get-together is called, I don't think people should assume Miles will automatically say "yes" if offered the job. The LSU beat writer for the Shreveport Times made a fairly strong case for why Miles will stay at LSU in a column from yesterday (which I posted in a thread from last night).

The easiest way to avoid being on the list of people who turned them down is not to meet with them. Then he wouldn't even be offered. You don't meet if there isn't at least some interest.
January 10th, 2011 at 9:07 AM ^
Well,....guess no BREAKING NEWS later today......oh well,....have to wait at least 2 more days....

If he doesn't eliminate Les Miles as an option, David Brandon will get heat for not having done so, no matter who he ends up hiring.
ESPN, and DB's own Bo era cronies expect it. This is where Bill Martin failed. If he had contacted Miles then that whole Les Miles contigent would have been a lot quieter, and more accepting of Rich Rodriguez.

My guess is that Les and his agent are going through this process to get leverage with LSU for more money and an annual Les Miles parade in Baron Rogue. The old story about how UM is someone's "dream" job has worn quite thin at this point. Why would Les leave a perennial powerhouse in the SEC that is returning 18 starters to move north for a rebuilding job with a dysfunctional fanbase and local media that will scrutinize him under a magnifying glass?
If your only answer is "He's a Michigan Man and loves Michigan!", please move on to the next candidate. Les is using us for leverage just like JH probably did
January 10th, 2011 at 10:36 AM ^
While i agree that Michigan may not be the "dream" job that we have hyped it up to, we have made Michigan seem like the pinnacle for coaching and honestly Michigan is not at the top anymore. I do think that rebuilding Michigan would be huge for a coach's reputation. As it would show that the coach can rebuild a recently struggling program. This is not as impressive as building up a WAC or MWC school, but shows that the coach can also handle the extreme pressures from a big school (fans, alumni, media, etc...).
I agree that i don't think Miles is coming, mostly due to the reasons you stated, but i would say that Michigan is still a "dream" job to some coaches out there. There are still a lot of reasons that coaches would want to win at Michigan.
January 10th, 2011 at 10:49 AM ^
I agree it is a dream job to coaches like Brady Hoke but top-tier candidates at BCS programs that are currently doing very well? Not so sure. I certainly used to think so but the last search and this one have lead me to strongly doubt that assumption. Either the actual search process (both times) has been so incompetent that we actually drove candidates away or the Michigan program doesn't have the luster (for whatever reason) it used to. Hopefully the hire this time will allow me to completely retract this line of reasoning

No problem, DB. Take your time.
