OT: Hurricanes about to hire Gruden?
There's a lot of buzz going on right now amongst college football reporters:
Such as...
November 28th, 2010 at 9:28 PM ^
I'll bet he recruits lots of QBs.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:59 PM ^
No just the ones with the name "Brett".
November 28th, 2010 at 9:29 PM ^
Jon Gruden isn't how you spell Rich Rodriguez. I thought RR was the next Miami coach! Someone on this very blog even said some "well-connected alum" from Miami said it was so...
And just watch as another sure-fire rumor dies in a blaze of glory.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:31 PM ^
Which one dies? The new rumor or the old rumor?
November 28th, 2010 at 9:44 PM ^
I stated NUMEROUS times it was far from "sure-fire" and the alum was from Michigan not Miami. Nobody said it was happening, just passing it along with the firing of Shannon.
Hopefully it can be put to rest about 24 hours after it started. Let's move on.

I believe it when Herbie says it is so.

Gruden had mucho success in the NFL. It would be interesting to see what he can do at the college level.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:35 PM ^
Lots of insiders are verifying. FWIW, some have received texts from players confirming the hire.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:42 PM ^
I don't get why people think Gruden would be a good college coach. He's the definition of a pro coach, and pro ethos rarely translate well into the collegiate coaching world.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:56 PM ^
There are many examples of college coaches heading to the pros only to be bumped out due to how bad they are. I'm not sure of any examples of successful NFL coaches going to college and what their results have been.

Wannstedt, Carroll and John Robinson are three off the top of my head. Carroll and Robinson both played in or won National Championships at USC. Wannstedt has won any NCs but he's at least made Pitt respectable in the Big East. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that come to mind.
November 29th, 2010 at 8:56 AM ^
He did say successful. I mean, I guess those were all ok, but none were really stunning images of success.
November 29th, 2010 at 11:24 PM ^
2 of the three I listed played in a national championship game and/or won one. If thats not successful enough for you then there must be some other measure that you know of that I'm not aware of. The other one has put together and steady program that is usually in the picture for a divisional title. To say that none were stunning images of success is, well just false.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:02 PM ^
What do you mean by that? I think ex-Oakland Raider head coaches who've taken their team to the Super Bowl make EXCELLENT head coaches. Especially when given the job of restoring a once high profile school to a position of excellence.
Sincerely,
Bill Callahan

Nevermind, this was stupid.
November 28th, 2010 at 11:28 PM ^
unpredictable results from the good (pete carroll), the so-so (dave wannstedt, dennis erickson) and the bad (bill callahan).
etc, etc.

The 500 point minimum is probably still up from yesterday. Give it a few days
November 28th, 2010 at 10:43 PM ^
Ah ok. Thx. Had forgotten it was just Sunday.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:00 PM ^
It was raised after one of the recent losses due to people posting an excessive amount of nonsense.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:49 PM ^
If this is true then Gruden is leaving a lot of Mike Holmgren's money on the table in Cleveland.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:23 PM ^
I'm a Browns season ticket holder Clarkie. Holmgren has already told the media who Mangini's replacement will be if/when he lets him go.
Holmgren

I don't really like the guy but I have to imagine he has connections to Gruden.
November 28th, 2010 at 9:57 PM ^
just saw that. i'd love to find out how these rumors get started if this is false.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:05 PM ^
..An insider's cousin's former-roommate-in-college's cleaning lady's son once mowed lawns for John Gruden's uncle...
November 28th, 2010 at 10:07 PM ^
a lesson learned in the RR saga to continue...

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Gruden and Rich Rod arm wrestling for the job. I guess it's pretty serious.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:22 PM ^
heard it from my twice removed uncle's stepdog.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:31 PM ^
Patches is a pretty reliable source.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:33 PM ^
you know him. His cover is blown. There goes my leads.

'Lets give a big Hurricane welcome to our new coach Bill Cowher!!!!.'
November 28th, 2010 at 10:07 PM ^
But I have a very hard time seeing Cowher at the U...
November 28th, 2010 at 10:12 PM ^
Wherever there is a Gruden rumor Cowher seems to pop up or vice versa. Its almost cliche.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:17 PM ^
Dungy just walked off the NBC SNF set to ink his 3.7 mill deal. touche.
November 28th, 2010 at 11:18 PM ^
They're also the ones we let get away supposedly.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:16 PM ^
What do you guys think of Randy Shannon as our defensive coordinator?
November 28th, 2010 at 10:23 PM ^
brought it up. You sir are a pioneer.
November 28th, 2010 at 10:26 PM ^
I think we take a big sack of money to Jeff Casteel's house first and ask him if he wants it. If he doesn't the person I'd offer it to next would be Shannon.
November 29th, 2010 at 8:57 AM ^
T'would be spectacular...as long as we wait until after the bowl.
November 28th, 2010 at 11:37 PM ^
The Miami blogs have been reporting the rumor but also stating they don't think The U can afford what it would take to bring Gruden / lure him away from the TV booth. They have to buy out Shannon and Shannon's staff and come up with enough money for a new staff. So they feel Gruden is too pricey.
November 28th, 2010 at 11:45 PM ^
No disrespect to Gruden's accomplishments, but the guy has been out of the game altogether for two years, and is eight years removed from the Super Bowl. Has the coach to announcer to coach thing ever worked, yet alone at a major program?
November 29th, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
Two years isn't a very long time. He isn't playing, he's just coaching. I don't think he lost his playbooks or forgot how to coach, and I'm sure he breaks down a hell of a lot of film in his current gig.

I'd guess Mario Cristobal is next in line, but I have a feeling that Miami might not be so interested in another former Hurricane from inside the family.
