My hat in the ring

Submitted by His Dudeness on

This doesn't really mean much, but after this loss I don't think I can be an RR apologist anymore. I realize that if we go another direction at head coach we will be in for another 2 seasons of pain. At this point we are ND under Weis... there is no doubt. I just don't know anymore. If RR is fired at the end of the season I can't complain. It has been 3 years. My hat is in the ring. I will no longer try to convince people that this is right. We suck. Bad. And after three years you really can't explain it away. It's sad.

But the previous coach (Fry) went:

5-7

6-6

5-5-1

8-4

9-3

7-5

3-8

leading up to the coaching change.  If one can make the oversimplifying assumption that the team was in a linear demise, then 1-10 isn't unexpected.

And Ferentz is a good coach.  I don't think anybody in the Big Ten does more with less.

And dude, you're comparing us to Iowa?  I think the standards are just a bit different.  Then and now.

is more about patience, not comparing us to Iowa.

I can guarantee there were Hawkeyes who wanted Ferentz gone after year 1 and 2, and even probably 3.

This is a different era of college football and the Big Ten (hello Nebraska), Michigan will never have the same level of success for as long as we enjoyed for 40+ years.  Every single college football program went through a down period in that time, THIS is ours.  And every single college football program believes it can win and gives its athletes what they need to win, unlike 30 years ago when it was only the big boys.

It's not like U-M football hasn't gone through a rough period before, e.g., the 1960s and other programs in more recent years have.  No one talks about it now, but USC was thought to be a faded program in the mid/late 1990s.  Alabama from the late 90s until Saban's tenure began was a totally up and down program (there's several mediocre and losing seasons in that stretch).

I'm not saying that it isn't tough to watch Michigan's program struggle like this, but I truly believe, based on the trends I've been seeing in the last 10-15  years, that there really is more parity in college football these days.  Even the top programs have run into difficulty.

and Florida are great examples.  They each lost high profile players.  They still have the same loaded top 5 classes of talent, but they are young at key positions.  Texas just lost its 4th game.  Florida lost 3 in a row and could have lost yesterday.

The margin between great season and mediocre is just razor thin these days.

Maybe GERG needs to go, but Martin was hurt and we had a ton of freshmen on the field. Some players were in new positions too.

PSU can run the ball.

We should have seen this coming.

Only time will make the D better.

What can we really do???

Sure, Penn State can run.  But they ran and passed all over us.  McGloin looked like a seasoned veteran against us.  If you let a team run a balanced attack, then you'll get beat on all fronts.  I don't see how Gerg doesn't say "Let's make the walk on beat us with his arm."  and stack up the box.  Don't let PSU run, blitz to pressure the walk on and see if you could rattle him.  Our D just played middle of the road, didn't committ to anything.  They basically stood in place and reacted to what PSU wanted to do.  There was no aggression, attacking on this side of the ball.  Litterally, the defense just took up space and hoped for PSU to make a mistake.  The PSU game plan was so simple, it almost couldn't make mistakes.  Our D has been reduced to watching and hoping a team beats itself.  It's agonizing to watch.  I know we've got injuries.  I know we have freshmen playing.  I know we have guys playing new positions.  At some point though, you've got to be realistic and realize that this isn't working.  Gerg needs to go.  He simply isn't connecting with the players.  He can't teach them.  If he could, you'd at least see some improvement throughout the year.  Right now, the players look lost and tentative.  If we're gonna get beat on D, I'd rather it be b/c our guys were getting BEAT after making an aggressive play and not standing there trying not to make a mistake.  If the D continues on this path, there won't be any more stops and certainly no more turnovers.  We truly give offenses nothing to fear and therefore, nothing to change their game plans for.  They know they can do whatever they want.  It's time to let the guys pin their ears back and play downhill.  If they get beat, at least it won't be for lack of trying and giving it all.

I remember back in August, after reading this:  http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2010-secondary  and http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-2010-heuristics-and-stupid-prediction,

I was afraid Brian was going to off himself.

Stuff like:

"The next day Henri the Otter of Ennui made his earliest-ever appearance on the blog (setting a record that will probably stand for all time) while I enumerated the options left at corner, mentioning Richard Nixon twice before a nominal first-string player at the semi-public fall scrimmage."

"Meanwhile, literally every backup except the aforementioned Williams has never played a meaningful snap at Michigan because they arrived two months ago or, in the case of James Rogers, was just one of those guys who seems like they're never going to play from day one. I could just point you to their recruiting profiles, tell you they'll be in the conversation for worst secondary in the league, and resume cowering in a closet. Previewing this position group is almost totally pointless: I've never really seen anyone play. They're probably going to be bad."

"7-5 is still the call, but with the secondary attrition 6-6 is more likely than 8-4; before I thought the reverse."

Well guess what?

The man was/is just a genius.

You saved me a bunch of time.  Thanks for pulling that info.  I think we all got a little over excited with the 5-0 start and the heisman ink.  The young team probably thought they were better than they were.  Well is this hasn't brought us back to earth and in line with our pre-season expectations I don't know what will.  In August I wished for 7 wins.  Looks like that is still feasible and next year we should be back into the big10 hunt with 8-10 wins.

3-9

5-7

7-5

9-3

etc...

Let the man graduate a class.  he has been coaching them for 2.6 seasons.

I'll be stunned if UM beats Illinois.  Illinois actually has a decent defense.  As we saw yesterday, it doesn't matter how bad your offense is, everyone has the ability to shred UM's defense.  If UM loses to Illinois and beats Purdue, their big ten record in 3 years under RR will be:

2-6

1-7

2-6

That's pathetic.

we are bad.

Rich Rodriguez will be fired at the end of the season., it is just a matter of waiting it out at this point.  I am willing to go through two painful years of the transition to make this stop.  Four more games and the nightmare will be behind us.

Oh thank God you're willing to lead us through another painful transition...only...who the fuck are you, and why should I care?

I'm really sick of all the "I've had enough" posters because they lack even a modicum of self awareness.  No one cares if you've had enough.  It doesn't matter.  Stop being such a whiny bitch.  And remember, no matter how much you love sports or college football, in the end, it's totally meaningless.  That's right, SPORTS ARE TOTALLY MEANINGLESS.  They are for fun (and $), but when fans start acting like little whiny bitches and demanding to see a HC and his entire staff fired just to be placated (like what they think or feel counts for anything), it is not fun.  It's just a bummer.  We may not be ND under Weis, but we are quickly turning into ND fans under Weis, which is infinitely worse.

My advice: get a hobby.  Find something with meaning in which to have a passion for.  When so much of your happiness is relying on the success of a bunch of 19-year-olds on an athletic field, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.  Every time.  Stop taking yourself and Michigan football so seriously.  It's just a game.

ijohnb

and I really don't give a fuck what you think.  Read your own post to figure out who is taking this way too seriously.  I did not say anything to indicate that Michigan football was anything but a little corner of my world, which it is.

All I said is that Rich Rod is going to be fired, and he should be, and he will be.

So now I will just go on about my day, carve pumpkins, take my son trick or treating, things will be great.  I can tell you occupy a joyless existence.  That is a shame.

GERG is inept. M had 4 d-linemen on 1st and goal from the 1. Likewise, in other short yardage situations, he is giving up the line of scrimmage. That has nothing to do with a young defense; that is poor coaching.

And the tide of public opinion rolls on. Funny how the RR backlash train only moves after a Michigan loss. It appears that so many Michigan "fans" WANT us to lose all of our remaining games in order to make the decision easier for Brandon. That is sad and pathetic. Let me remind you, we still have 4-5 games left. If we win at least 3 of them, we are looking at at least an 8-5 record -- not bad considering how the last few years went. In my eyes, next year will be the most critical year for RR and should be the deciding factor in whether he continues to coach here. Nobody will want to come here and coach if they're only guaranteed 3 years to install a brand new system, recruit their own players, and win 10+ games.  Let's put an end to the whole coaching change discussion until the season is over and we can assess the entire situation. Throwing in the towel right now is premature.

A team with a walk on QB who has never started a game before put up 41 points on Michigan.  Said team also let the offensive juggernaut, Minnesota, put up 400+ yards against them.  There is no way we are going to win 3 more games.  The only other likely win is going to be against Purdue.

and wish I could share it.

The facts are is that Michigan is 4-16 in Big 10 play under Rich in 2 1/2 years. Even under the most ideal of situations it'd be incredible to nearly double his win total over the next 4 games against an improving Illinois team and two top-notch teams in Wiscy and OSU. Unfortunately, there is ample evidence help is not coming on defense this season. He has one win against a quality Big 10 team, that being his first game in September 2008.

Winning two of the next four is going to be an incredibly tough task and if he gets that done, it should seriously be considered progress. It'd be a LOT more than what we've seen so far under Rich.

I don't see this team getting much better under RR. Sure our D couldn't be worse, but we are years away from an even average defense. We will not be much better next year, so if RR gets another year he will just be delaying the future coaching change.
