number 1 jersey to denard?

Submitted by AdverseVillain77 on

A friend of mine the other day said we should give Denard the number 1 jersey, but personally 16 is emblazened in my mind as Denard.   What do you guys think?

Greg McMurtry was a senior when Desmond was a freshman and McMurty wore #1 all four years.  The year after he left, Derrick Alexander got the #1 jersey as a sophomore and Desmond remained #21.

Derrick and Desmond were then supposed to be our two stud receivers.  But then Derrick blew out his knee and missed the entire 1991 season.  That probably helped Desmond win the Heisman because he didn't have to share playing time with Derrick.

McMurtry, Howard and Alexander make up second part of this highlight video I made last year.  4:38 to the end.

starts throwing deep balls and then runs downfield to catch them himself? He would probably have time to run over to the sidelines and switch out jerseys too

...he starts catching his own passes, which, as I think about it, is feasible.

(Edit:  Dang it DeWitt. You must have posted a second or two before me! Great minds...)

is that one day after Denard Robinson departs with his name splattered all over the recordbooks, Meeechigan will award the #16 jersey to the most deserving QB's.

A new tradition is born.

No it should always go to a WR. I like Roundtree a lot but I dont know if he should get the #1. The #1 has to go to a game changer i.e. Braylon-MSU most recently.

Would #2 be worthy to  go to the defenses best corner? I know the number doesnt have the success as #1 has but Charles Woodson dominated in every aspect of the game like very few have. It could be an idea id Rodriguez wanted to start a tradition at UM.

Does anyone else think it's ironic when we praise Denard, Coach Rodriguez and the athletic department for promoting "the team, the team, the team" aspect of our season, but then we turn around and want to single out one wide receiver to carry on a tradition of wearing number 1?

Just me?  Okay then.  Carry on degrading the rest of our wide receivers.

I don't think it is degrading the rest of our wr's. I would hope it would motivate the rest to try and achieve the opportunity to wear it. Is it degrading to our other qb's that Denard gets all the media attention and press? No. In the case of Tate, it had motivated him to be a better player and to be more supportive of his teammates and I would hope that would be the case with the wr's and the #1 jersey.

I'm not usually somebody to do this, but do we really need to discuss this same topic 3 times a week?

1) Denard isn't a "Look at me I'm #1" kind of guy.

2) For some reason we've given Braylon some say in it.  Foolishly.

3) It should be used as a recruiting tool as the icing on the cake for a top tier WR recruit.

or

3b) Just give it to Roundtree already.

And he did so for very selfish reasons.  First to remind everyone he controls it, and secondly as revenge since he wanted it and Lloyd used it as a way to make him work.

My Dad is shocked that the #1 is such a big deal, and he raised me on Michigan Football watching AC.  At that time the statement about the #1 jersey was that it was the only number that would fit on AC's body.

Now it's this huge ritual, but not because of any WR's that wore it other than Braylon.  Who is making a big deal out of it for the wrong reasons.

The Number 16 is important now BECAUSE Denard has chosen to wear it.  Denard is not special because he chose 16.

Now let's bring up that discussion about the helmet stickers again.

Use the reply button next time.

And perhaps I worded that incorrectly, but I don't understand how people are picking Roundtree out of a receiving corp that, according to Brian, "chooses straws before the game" to determine who has a breakout performance.  If you want to go by total yards, then Stonum should get it next year.  If you want to go by best blocking, it's got to go to Odoms.  If you're looking at big plays in clutch situations, Junior might have the edge after last week.  If you want the guy who's been the most consistent this season and who has the best Donald Duck voice, Roundtree is your guy.

Braylon Edwards establishing a scholarship at UofM is a great thing.  Reminding everyone that he was the man in college and griping about who should get the number 1 jersey was selfish and detrimental to Coach Rodriguez.  Make the number 1 jersey just like every other jersey our players can choose, and stop putting it on a pedestal.

I think if we're looking for the next Braylon Edwards in this offense we will be searching a long time. Rich Rod's offense is about spreading the ball around to many different lethal receivers. I don't see a guy coming along soon that we just throw jump balls up to and he comes down with it. The Braylon-type is much better suited for a pro-style offense, IMO. Really not sure in a QB-oriented spread you'll find a WR who can dominate a game like that.

I can totally see Roundtree getting it though, he's been as close to the new version of "dominant" i think you can be in this offense. His ability to take those WR screens for big gains is unreal.

I think the balance of the season will give us a clue on whether the #1 is given to Roundtree, Hemingway, or neither. We're certainly not going to change a number mid-season.

I agree that with our current crop of WR's, Roundtree is the most deserving of the #1 jersey, while physically Hemingway would be the most capable #1 jersey holder.

However, I just don't feel the same way about those guys that I felt about David Terrell or Braylon.  With those guys, it was well known they were our go to guys and they still couldn't be stopped.  I felt like head to head with any CB they would win out everytime.  I'm not sure if I have that sort of confidence in these guys, even though I think they're very talented and I like all of them.  JR has the physical ability to be that guy, but just doesn't have the durability.

When I think of the #1 jersey I think of a gamebreaker that makes game changing plays, like Braylon against MSU.  I guess I just feel like when someone comes along that deserves the #1 it shouldn't have to be debated, you just instantly recognize the talent.  However it would be something if Roundtree reaches out and takes it on the field.

I think it should go to an accomplished receiver like those being mentioned .. but there was a player named Tyrone Butterfield that wore it also ,and Roy Roundtree has already surpassed his career numbers ( I  am pretty sure of that ) .M Odoms was earning it in my opinion until recently when he has got  lost in the offense due to the throwing of more deep balls to D Stomun and J Hemingway.    W Historian would know when Tyrone  played .I think L Carr was the coach

In the Mgo.licious section M Rothstien has an article about Tyrone and it says in there that he was here for the comeback win against Virginia in 1995 ,, He transfered later to Tennnesee state a 1-aa school

IMHO, a #1 at Michigan would never get chased down at the 1 yard line multiple times. Nothing against Roundtree, but that isn't elite, #1 worthy in my eyes.

No #1 for Denard.  Should go to a WR, however this offense doesn't seem to have a go-to WR... It seems to have 3 go-to WRs.  Stonum, Roundtree and Hemmingway all step up depending on coverages.  Not sure if this spread leads to one WR having those monster stats that we were used to.

I almost think that the #1 will be earned off the field as much as on it.  I look for Roundtree to earn it by his Sr year.  He appears to be a leader and team player.
