I don't understand how it's classless to not give up. He still has 11(12) more games to play, gotta get his kids the most gametime as possible and teach them to keep fighting no matter what.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
Agreed! Just becaue we as fans wanted to get out of there doesn't mean that Edsall was being classless by calling time outs and having them spike it. As a division 1 athlete you have to have a never say die attitude. Kneeling it there does no good for the young guys on that team that are trying to adapt that mindset.

Showing everyone that he plays till the last second of the game. Doesn't give up and just kneel down when the games clearly in hand by the other team.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:09 PM ^
The game isn't over till its over. He wants to instill that into his players minds. Good call if you ask me!!!
September 4th, 2010 at 7:10 PM ^
I'm actually kind of glad that he was throwing deep passes to give our secondary a little more experience.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:11 PM ^
But Edsall did what any good coach should do...keep playing. He did nothing wrong.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:11 PM ^
Had RR been doing this, then yes it's classless. For the losing team to do it, then they're just not giving up. There's nothing wrong with that.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:14 PM ^
I agree. They put 60 minutes on the clock for a reason. He's entitled to use every second of that.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:24 PM ^
MORE LIKE MAYBE HE SHOULD HAVE STARTED COACHING IN THE FOURTH AM I RITE GUYS
*HIGH FIVES*

Need to work on 2 minute drills and what not. It's cool, if obnoxious.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:16 PM ^
if you take a knee down by 20 w/ less than a minute remaining. that's just being a realist and not getting anyone hurt needlessly. and don't get me wrong, i'd feel no sorrow if we ran up the score on everyone. just think it's pointless to call timeouts when you have absolutely no chance to win.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:52 PM ^
Maybe football teams should never have scrimmages/practices then... no need to get hurt...
September 4th, 2010 at 7:17 PM ^
right now, this is one of the most absurd threads i have ever read. Celebrate the fact that we just smashed a so called favorite to compete for the big east championship, when everyone is calling for our coach's head, saying our defense is worthless, saying we need to pick a quarterback, and so on...i'm not even gonna elaborate on if it was ok for them to "keep competing" whether the game was out of hand or not, never give up. i just wish i was at the big house right now celebrating with 113,000 and not here in cali reading this nonsense.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
i'm not taking anything away from our win. i hope uconn was better than their 10 pts and we beat everyone else on our schedule.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:18 PM ^
really? classless? ugh. it's called trying to build some momentum into their next game. they're widely considered to be contenders for the big east title. they looked really sloppy today on offense, and had they gotten a score on that drive, it certainly would help their confidence going into the next game. you are never supposed to give up and roll over if you're behind.
ugh.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:18 PM ^
None.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
Futile, maybe.
But I think any coach worth a darn would have done exactly the same thing. I don't fault him for that.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:21 PM ^
Like UM going for it late in the 4th wasn't a bit dickish, at least by this standard? I say, play to the whistle unless you are trying to embarrass the other team.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:23 PM ^
i must have missed it. if you are talking about trying to get a 1st down so we could run out the clock there at the end, not the same thing. if we wanted to be dicks, we'd have kicked the field goal.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
Kicking the field goal is the dick thing to do in that situation. Then you're just trying to increase your margin of victory. We went for it just so we could get the final first down and kill the clock.

RR absolutely decided not to try and score at the end of the game. After Michigan easily got a first down on UConn's 28, he sent in a fulback and ran up the middle 3 times. He would have done it again on 4th down but Edsall called a timeout. So, RR went for the first down.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:24 PM ^
Check out the points RR's WVU teams scored in the past. Unlike Lloyd/Debord, RR will not let up on the gas. Edsall wanted to make it 17-30.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:27 PM ^
i'm not opposed to piling on. after reading folks responses, i still see no point in losing by 13 as opposed to 20. moral victories are for losers.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:37 PM ^
I can certainly understand taking a knee, but I don't see a problem with the Huskies going for a score at the end. Sure, they couldn't win, but a live two-minute drill doesn't hurt them--as long as they have no injuries.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:55 PM ^
It's kind of like one of those unwritten rules, you shouldn't leave the field with timeouts if you have lost the game. That is a sign of not doing everything you can to win a game. In all honesty, if I played for a coach that left timeouts on the field and we lost I would be highly pissed off!
September 4th, 2010 at 10:29 PM ^
I thought it was very strange. If they want to run hurry up and try to score I have no problem with that, but it was a very slow, lazy hurry up. They made no effort to stop us from burning several minutes off the clock on the last Michigan drive (in which we clearly went to a super-conservative type eating play scheme) until 4th down. Then, when UConn had the ball, they alternated between calling timeouts, spiking the ball... and letting 30 seconds run off between plays.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:47 PM ^
I definitely wouldn't take a knee. You're behind - you have to at least try to score. I did think he got a little obsessive with all the last-minute timeouts and spikes, but I wouldn't call it classless.
