Would having Penn State in the division make anyone feel better?
Honestly, this never even occurred to me, but it seems like a possibility. MVictors put the idea into my head, and now I can't get it out.
At least it splits up OSU and PSU. We already know that Iowa and Wisconsin are split, so the only question is whether Iowa should be in Nebraska's division, or not. I'll guess they will be:
- Michigan, PSU, MSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern
- OSU, Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois
For what it's worth, I could live with this if M versus OSU must absolutely be broken up for some reason I can't see.

If we are screwing with one rivalry, we might as well start a new one from scratch.

benefit of playing PSU every year instead of having them on and off the schedule like now.. is that PSU is the closest school to me.. I could go every other year...

Would having Penn State in the division make anyone feel better?
No

...either Nebraska or Penn State would be the next best options. Probably Penn State would be a little better. Just NOT MSU!

fuck no

Seeing the inevitable (and objectionable) approaching, I sincerely hope that Penn State is in The Other Division with OSU.
I am presuming that kicking out PSU and MSU and returing to ten schools is not one of the listed options, is that correct?

Pre-expansion, I would have loved a schedule in which we play OSU, MSU, PSU, and Minnesota every year.
Post-expansion, I find this to be completely terrible in all ways, shapes, and forms.

I wanted to compete for the Jug every year, but not like this. Not like this!

i actually feel like Nebraska has a better trajectory for success in the near future than Penn State. Penn State has the million dollar question and the rough transition looming, whereas Neb already had theirs.
having PSU in division, by my logic above, means a game against a lesser caliber opponent and perhaps an easier win and path to the title game. at this point, i favor this. if we were in a position where UM was dominant for the past 2 years, i would say "I want all the best, every year."
August 26th, 2010 at 2:01 PM ^
I don't give 2 shits about years Michigan doesn't play PSU now, so no.
August 26th, 2010 at 2:02 PM ^
I have been wondering. Why do there have to be divisions? Why can't it just be 12 teams and the top two play for the championship?
August 26th, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
I've no idea if that's accurate, but I know they require at least 12 teams for a championship game, so it makes sense there could be more to the rule, like there must be two divisions.

I would take Nebraska every time. Our series against them is too lopsided at the moment for there to be a lot of bad feelings from our side going towards them, which is needed for a real rivalry.

not next year, but when a decade or so has gone by and I, like the rest of family, get early onset dementia then yes! Because I finally won't freaking remember how Brandon and Delaney screwed up The Game.

Big 10 PR person after reading these replies: "And that's why are fans are so clearly excited about the Michigan - Penn State division."

Is the use of "are" subtle satire or did you just make a grammatical mistake?
August 26th, 2010 at 2:48 PM ^
Would you believe me if I said the former?
I re-wrote the sentence - initially it was something like "That's why Big Ten fans are so great. They are..."

Is this making sense to anyone else??

At this point, I'm so full of spite, I'll do anything to NOT play MSU on the final weekend. I have no proof, but feels like MSU, PSU, and Wisconsin are the ring leaders of this whole mess. They sure seem to be the ones getting all the benefits of the new proposed/leaked division lineups. Especially if Wisconsin gets their wish to be Nebraska's main B10 rival. They would efectively move from the #6 team in the B10 to being on one of the main televised games of Thanksgiving Weekend.
Though if you split up the "big 4" (M, OSU, PSU, Neb) two and two in the divisions, it makes the most sense to play those four against each other on the final weekend inter-division. Best case scenario it'd make an interesting 4 team "playoff" since the division titles should be going through those four schools most years. A no brainer if "best case scenario" really is the motivating factor behind splitting up Michigan and Ohio State, as Brandon/Smith/Delany are making it out to sound.
If they don't do that, then I'll know for sure that the B10 didn't do this for money, and didn't do it for best case scenario, they did this because they gave the nobody schools equal say in something they had very little involvement in building, the greatness of the Big Ten.

Think about it, MSU makes out like a bandit. They get to play up that they have an actual rivalry with Michigan, and get to play in a division where there's a much smaller chance of having to play PSU and/or OSU every year.
August 26th, 2010 at 2:43 PM ^
U of M and OSU should be in one division and PSU and Nebraska should be in the other. If they won't do that, I don't care what teams are in our division.
August 26th, 2010 at 2:49 PM ^
Simply put...no, it does not make me feel better.
August 26th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
While I woud prefer PSU over Nebraska in the division, it would be better overall (assuming The Split) to have Michigan-Nebraska and OSU-PSU. OSU-Nebraska would be meaningless for both parties, while Michigan and Nebraska at least have 1997 and 2005 to fight about. PSU-OSU has been a good game, as close to a rivalry as PSU can get, and it should be preserved.
August 26th, 2010 at 3:09 PM ^
But having said that, an OSU-PSU intradivisional rivalry game is more sensible and natural and, uh, like, they deserve each other.
So yeah; Reason Number 14 to send PSU to The Other Division.

How about . . . Ohio State in the division? I have an inkling that a game against them the last week of the season might be fun.
