OT - RIP Gordon Downie
Relevant to mgoblog but Gordon had been fighting terminal brain cancer for a long time. He was a national treasure.

to see him in Winnipeg on the farewell tour. Was an all-time great moment.
RIP

We all knew this day was coming, but godammit anyway. Downie was a brilliant musician, songwriter, and a beautiful person to boot.
I feel privileged to have seen him perform, and to have his recordings. So hard done by.
One of my favorites, and somehow apropos today:

I loved the Tragically Hip, but I was in college in the 80s. Do many people, even from Michigan, know them? Because I have never met anyone anywhere else who did.

They were a staple on Windsor's 89X back in the day. Could pick up the signal in A2 easily back in the 1990s, and Canadian radio had some sort of minimum Canadian artist content rule.
So a lot of people in Detroit/A2 were aware of The Hip, along with Our Lady Peace, The Gandharvas, etc.

Canadian content law. The downside being more Bieber and Nickelback

Don't forget Sloan.
October 18th, 2017 at 3:25 PM ^
I'm always surprised by the number of Canadians I work with who have no idea who Sloan is. It sometimes feels like they were bigger in the Metro Detroit area than in Canada.

89X was literally a treasure trove of great Canadian music. So many underrated bands... The Hip, Sloan, The Gandharvas, etc. I feel fortunate to have grown up in the shadow of their airwaves. RIP Gord. Thanks for the music.

I saw them years ago when they came through Grand Rapids. Had heard some of their stuff on 88.1 - local independent radio station. Not sure they came through my area much after that. Solid.
Shame about him passing. F cancer.

I grew up in the GR area and WGRD used to play them a decent amount in the 90's.
October 18th, 2017 at 11:03 AM ^
I was living in GR at the time. WGRD wasn't exactly a ground breaking station, but this sounds feasible. They played BNL before they showed up on MTV.

I still have a GRD bottle opener keychain that I use once in a while. It was in some random box at my parents for 25 years.

I grew up (80's) with LAV. No idea if they still operate.
October 18th, 2017 at 2:19 PM ^
LAV is still around and doing classic rock.
KLQ (94.5) died and I think is a country station now.
I believe GRD is still modern rock but not sure.

They get/got some play on WXRT in Chicago. That's how I was introduced.

and moved back here in the early 90's and I've never heard of them/him. But, I like the song in the video above.

The Hip's last concert in Kingston was magical. It was on TV no commercials, people were watching at parties, on their porches, everywhere really.
We were walking home from our friend's place when the show was over and there were people on their porches crying. No hyperbole.
It was losing a piece of your identity.

He will be sorely missed.

I hear them all the time on 89.9 which is a canadian station. But I never would have heard of them otherwise. Strange because it sounds like they are huge in Canada.

I live close to the border in Washington and listen mostly to Canadian stations. It's gonna be a national day of mourning.

Every post I saw on Facebook yesterday was about something regarding Gord and The Hip.RIP's or people's special memories or videos of their music. It went for hours. The Hip is to Canada what Springsteen is to the US.

I am not really a fan ot the Tragically Hip but I do associate them with my time at UM: My freshman year in 1991 I saw them open for Eric Johnson at the Michigan Theater. I had never heard of them but I thought they were pretty good.

*Internet Fistbump*
That was a great show. Eric Johnson had amazing guitar skills for a 12 year old girl.

I had to find a list of all Eric Johnson concerts and I guess he has enough hard core fans that they uploaded copies of the flyers. Pretty cool. I like the option to "Charge by phone" to buy tickets. You never hear that anymore.
So old.....

Most of Windsor had made the trip. One of my favorite shows of all time. I heard them first after college and found the music to be infectious. Day for Night and Fully Completely became the soundtracks to my daily commute. He will be missed. As soon as I saw the post, Fifty Mission Cap started playing in my head.

Well, shit. Saw the Hip in Victoria, BC in 2007. One of my favorites.

First thing we'd climb a tree
And maybe then we'd talk
Or sit silently
And listen to our thoughts
With illusions of someday
Cast in a golden light
No dress rehearsal,
This is our life
And that's where the hornet stung me
And I had a feverish dream
With revenge and doubt
Tonight, we smoke them out
You are ahead by a century
Stare in the morning shroud
And then the day began
I tilted your cloud
You tilted my hand
Rain falls in real time
And rain fell through the night
No dress rehearsal, this is our life
But that's when the hornet stung me
And I had a serious dream
With revenge and doubt
Tonight, we smoked them out
You are ahead by a century
And disappointing you is gettin' me down

Upon looking at the title, I was saddened to hear about the passing of a former classmate, but this is not, thankfully, referring to the former University of Michigan and Olympic swimmer.

Always enjoyed the Tragically Hip and Gord will be missed. My favorite piece of music with him has to Sleeping Sickness by Dallas Green that Gord was gracious enough to lend his vocal prowess too.
I've become, a simple souvenir of someone's kill
Like the sea, I'm constantly changing from calm to ill
Madness fills my heart and soul as if the
Great divide could swallow me whole, oh how I'm breaking down
RIP Mr Downie
