B-Ball Still Unranked
Missed it by one in the AP poll and by three in the USA Today/ESPN poll - we are first and third respectively in the "other receiving votes."
At least we are in the top thirty, I suppose.

No offense intended to MBAgoblue, but I hereby propose an indefinite suspension of all 'why isn't basketball ranked?' posts. It will happen. Sit back and enjoy the journey

Fine. When I post something that says "why are we unranked," you will have a point. This post, however, is news as of this afternoon. No questions asked, no whingeing, nothing.
Sheesh.

Sorry, just the second time in a short period that I've had to defend my post topic.

They will be ranked as soon as they lead the big ten midway through the season.
Voters still think the team is flukey but we know the truth. mwah mwah mwah hee hee hee *evil grin*

You know, since the last poll all they've done is beaten EMU so, is that really enough to put them over the top? I say no. They might not get ranked until Big 10 season starts (if ever). Their next 4 games or so are the cuppiest of cupcakes. Oakland on Saturday at The Palace. I'm goin! But really, will they be ranked after (hopefully) beating Oakland??

Odds are good that if they win out their remaining non-conference schedule that they'll be ranked in one or both polls before conference starts on New Year's Eve. I mean, all they'll likely need is for one of the teams in the 5-10 spots ahead of them to lose one game before then, and that's almost a mathematical certainty.
But yeah, I agree with the above. It doesn't much matter at this point. Everything should take care of itself.

...some lower-tier top-25 teams lose this week (like KU losing to UMASS)and we manhandle Oakland (as we very well could), there is a decent chance we could become 25th in a poll. But really we don't play anyone 'til Wisky on NYE.
BUT, as I've said before (along with 6 million others): rankings right now don't mean anything. It's a clusterf*ck, a crapshoot. When we play UCONN in February you can start taking the rankings as having some meaning. Our RPI is currently at 21, SOS at 19 (I think).

Bball rankings are worthless anyways. As long as we get into the tournament that is all that matters.

Especially early in the season. They are at best random, with a strong skew towards big name programs.

Why does it matter if we aren't in the top 25? As long as we are in the top 64, then I don't care.

If you look at the schedule of the teams in the top 25, it's almost a gimme that Michigan will crack the polls in at least one if not both polls next week -- if it has a convincing win over Oakland. The Savannah State game is holding them back a little right now.

The only ranking that matters in basketball is the RPI, and according to realtimerpi.com, we're currently #21.

Why Being Ranked Matters:
It is great to be ranked because the media coverage/exposure the team gets like triples. Preview write ups get done, they make it onto the scroll, the get highlights shown sometimes even if they play a cupcake...

It would definitely be nice to see Michigan ranked again, but the rankings don't matter that much except for seeding purposes, if I understand correctly. As long as Michigan is unranked, the team should feel that it has more to prove, and that's a good thing.
What I don't like is that 2-loss Purdue and MSU are ranked (rather high, mind you) even though they were absolutely demolished by Duke and UNC, respectively, while Michigan and Illinois for that matter remain unranked. Whatever. We'll see what happens once Big 10 plays starts.
Actually, BleedingBlue makes a good point on publicity, so I agree with him on his points. Exposure is good.

Be Patient. We will soon be #10 in the nation. This will happen two games after the B10 season starts.
