Michigan v Marquette
My fellow M go basketball fans, looking forward to this one? I really don't know a ton about Marquette this year, but both teams are 2-0. Game is at MSG.
Marquette has had a strong knack recently of being a very average Big East team, but are coming off a pretty solid season last year. They have one guy at 6-11, after that they are about as short as Michigan.

Don't forget DJ, he's by no means short and he plays even taller due to his length and athleticism
November 17th, 2016 at 9:32 AM ^
Don't play. Donnal is tall but plays like he's 5'7.
In terms of rebounding acumen, Michigan will always be "short" I suppose. Will give it to DJ Wilson though, he's playing like he cares about the glass.

beat Howard in much more convincing fashion than we did. So you have the common opponent to base it on. However, I am going to go out on a limb with this one. I know, I know this is a crazy idea with a Beilein team, but I think if we make our three pointers we will win, and if we don't we will lose.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:09 AM ^
...make their 3s, they win the game. If they don't, then they lose.

...make their 3s, they win the game. If they don't, then they lose. You can say this about 90% of college basketball teams.
November 17th, 2016 at 9:55 AM ^
unfortunately the M crowd at MSG doesn't seem like it will be as big as usual tonight. might because the game is so late.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:05 AM ^
How can you come to a conclusion like this almost 12 hours before the game even starts? Out of the four squads in the 2k Classic, I'd reckon that Michigan is more likely than any other to have a large amount of fans in attendance.
True, it's a pretty meh assortment of teams, and lots of tickets are still available on the secondary market - at a very cheap price currently - but I still think there will be proportionally more M fans than Pitt, Marquette, or SMU fans.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:25 AM ^
If the attendance at MSG reflects our home attendance at all, there will be very few fans there.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:33 AM ^
You are surprised a 9:15 PM tip on a Friday night for a game against Howard didn't draw a sellout crowd?
November 17th, 2016 at 10:36 AM ^
It was the same for IUPUI as well. Even more concerning is that the student section attendance may be even worse than normal attendance.
http://www.mgoblue.com/tickets/students-bkm-season-plan.html
Aaaaand the Izzone has been planning a trip to Crisler for months because of how cheap tickets are. The fanbase has very much checked out.
November 17th, 2016 at 12:34 PM ^
That's a useful link but I still wouldn't compare our home schedule which has included 2 cupcakes and an exhibition to games at MSG. I think attendence will be just fine considering the large alumni and fan base in NY who don't get an opportunity to see many live games.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:43 AM ^
This is not a fair comparison. Tons of M fans/alums in NYC metro area who rarely get to see a live game, so when they play in NYC, there is usually a heavy turnout. I was at the Penn State game at MSG last year and thought the crowd had a healthy amount of maize and blue.
Obviously this is all speculation. I do suspect the attendance will be generally pretty low, but I also think that Michigan fans will account for the majority of the crowd.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:38 AM ^
you can look at the secondary market to see tickets for sale and talk to people who have gone every year but aren't going this year because of the tipoff time.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:04 AM ^
That, and it's hard to be as passionate about basketball when we are in the midde of a great football season -- plus the whole not knowing how great our bball team will be thing.
November 17th, 2016 at 9:55 AM ^
The only way I see us winning this game is if we are able to keep Fischer at bay and outrebound them. The last few years we have gotten our asses kicked by decent power conference teams and that has been mostly because of our lack of rebounding.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:02 AM ^
But I always feel like Michigan struggles early against crappy competition and then plays really well in these tougher non-conference road games at neutral sites.
I'd be surprised if this game was 4-5 points either way. It's always tough to prepare for Michigan's offense if you haven't seen it often.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:29 AM ^
The only year we have struggled against crappy competition recently was the post-seasonless year in 2014-15 where we lost to EMU/NJIT and played a close game with UDM.
Every other year we have won buy games by 20+ points pretty much every time (often by even larger margins).
November 17th, 2016 at 10:35 AM ^
I think he's talking about how we play against the early season doormats. Like letting Howard hang around into the second half.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:49 AM ^
The malaise in some of the early games seems to vanish when Michigan plays in this tournaments. Again, could just be my old memory.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:52 AM ^
We did lose to Charlotte early in in the 2013-2014 Elite 8 season. That team started very slow then just exploded in conference play.
November 17th, 2016 at 11:16 AM ^
Eh, that team started slow because of a tough schedule and injuries rather than actual poor play. McGary was playing through injury and then the team had to adjust when he got knocked out. They lost on the road to a top 15 or so Iowa State team, at Duke and to #1 Arizona by 2 points. They lost to Charlotte on a last-second gamewinner, but Charlotte was hot (they were in the Finals of that tournament after all) McGary was out for the season, GRIII missed the second half with injury and Stauskas was playing through an injury as well.
They still beat a couple other decent teams and then crushed any other inferior competition.
November 17th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
tournament and both teams shot terribly in that game anabling Charlotte to hang around and eventually win. A bunch of guys were either bunged up or not playing to their capabilty and it was the end of a slog of a tournament. In any case, that game turned out to have no impact on the season.

Let's not forget that ended up being a highly-ranked, 28-6 Xavier team. They finished the regular season ranked fifth (!!!)

...I think Marquette will probably run Michigan out of the building tonight. But I think Michigan will be better by the end of this year than they were by the end of last year.

When I say "short", I'm speaking more of a general lack of rebounding. And I hope it can be corrected with the way Wilson has stepped up as well as Wagner. But those problems have remained constant throughout JB's tenure.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:31 AM ^
If DJ Wilson is in the starting lineup, we'll probably actually be a top-end defensive rebounding team with Wilson and Walton. We'll never be a great offensive rebounding team because Beilein puts a heavier emphasis on players getting back to prevent transition.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:25 AM ^
I don't have the schedule in front of me, but this is a 9:30 PM start, right?
I am kind of intrigued by this game as an early test against decent competition, something that I think we will need - win or lose - to gauge this team at least a little bit. I am also intrigued by the upcoming game with Virginia Tech in a couple weeks in the Big Ten / ACC Challenge.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:26 AM ^
And these games, even though they are early, matter a ton when it gets to selection sunday and you are hanging on that bubble.

7pm games are the Noon games of basketball to me.
8pm I groan, 9 or later is when I get pissed because it ends so fucking late. Then you have to unwind and try to go to bed.
If it's a big win, you're over the moon and can't sleep. If it's a loss, you toss and turn and can't sleep.
Thankfully I don't work tomorrow so LET'S BE OVER THE MOON!!
November 17th, 2016 at 10:49 AM ^
You are far too picky about this.
November 17th, 2016 at 1:54 PM ^
I actually agree with him on. Tonight the game will start at 10, it won't end until just after midnight. It will take a good hour for me to fall asleep, contemplating how the game unfolded. So I am looking at falling asleep around 1 AM with a firm wakeup time of 4:45 AM. That sucks.
November 17th, 2016 at 10:46 AM ^
with at least 10 other alumni. I don't think the crowd overall will be large, but a Thursday night in NYC should bring a solid Michigan crowd. Barclays usually had a good showing, and MSG is way easier to get to for a lot more people.

Michigan wins 82 - 70
Walton puts up 28
Irvin scores 24

Nice prediction! I think Doyle and Chatman will provide some great minutes off the bench. Look for Dawkins to get a huge alley oop and ignite the crowd and team!

Doesn't play.
Donnal- Plays about a foot shorter than his listed height.
Irvin is a career 4.5 or so rebounder. Never been that great of a defender.
I don't think Robinson can defend anyone or get a rebound to use that height.
Height-wise, they aren't "short." However, this team is as guard-oriented as it always has been and will likely get crushed on the glass again unless others step up.

Maybe we can grab some Defensive Rebounds..
No Ragrets tonight!
