Rutgers punted 16 times tonight, surpassing the 1938 University of Chicago team for the second-most by a Michigan opponent in a single game.*

The University of Chicago abolished their football program in 1939.

Win with cruelty.

*Ohio State, with 21, is the record-holder thanks to the ludicrous 1950 Snow Bowl.

I didn't think much of it until the Rutgers fan behind me just started calling Harbaugh classless, etc. He could not get over it, as if the 4 touchdowns up until then were nothing, but the 2-pointer was the equivalent of calling his mother a whore. Is there a story behind this? Would love to know if Harbaugh has some beef.

The guys on the Michigan radio call seemed to think it was an automatic read -- like Blake O'Neill trying a fake punt against someone last year (Oregon St? UNLV?) on 4th and 17.

I love the idea that Michigan will read the defense on a try after touchdown.  Why not?  Look for every advantage you can get.  Perhaps Michigan might beat OSU 22-21 on a similar play; who knows.

I would have been upset with it in the second half, but, as far as I'm concerned, the first half is fair game.  Rutgers fans calling Harbaugh classless for that play had given up on the game early in the second quarter.

I don't know what everyone thinks is so funny about this game. We actually got lucky seeing as we lost the yardage battle. Their punter had 603 total yards to our 600. Gotta get that corrected in the bye week.

So they output our score. We score double their total yardage. Michigan scores more than one point per minute. Finally, Rutgers has 27 minutes of possession to our 33 despite 39 total yards, despite Michigan not really passing at all. This means that every second Rutgers spent scurrying back to the line of scrimmage we were closing off 1/4 of the remaining field.

I kept wondering if they were approaching their school record for kickoff return yards even without having one over 30 yards. With no touch backs I thought they could be getting there. I can't find their record, but it is probably more than 175. (Season record is only 984. )

Houston went over 1000 yards, but I can't find a boxscore.

The biggest discrepancy I can actually find is 701:

I would have guessed Georgia Tech/Cumberland, but apparently that was only 550. It's hard to believe they put up 222 points on less than 600 yards, but they ran back a lot of kicks for scores and their average starting field position was around the Cumberland 25 or so.

I thought the 59-0 prediction was a bit much. Hurricane Matthew remnants, road game, probably get the second string in there, and there was no way we'd hit 59. Boy was I wrong.

My theory: Harbaugh took note of Clemson jumping UM in the polls last week even though UM beat a #8 Wisconsin team a little more decisively than Clemson's last second stop of Louisville. I think Jim wanted to make sure the poll voters are aware this team can put up some points and shut opponents down completely.

This game was the definition of targeting: forceable contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent. Our entire team will sit out of the 1st half of the Illinois game.

I didn't see the game but when I saw the score go up as the game went on, I thought to myself 'this is bordering on unsportsmanlike'.  I think the final score goes beyond that and into unsportsmanlike territory.  In my opinion if I was a coach I would never beat a team by more than 50.  49-0 is enough. 63-65 is about the limit.  I don't think you should ever go over 70.  I know he probably had all the backups in and this is about Harbaugh 'winning with cruelty' and constantly competing etc, etc, but this is a little too much. Harbaugh can learn to take the foot off the gas a little.  I mean, its a clearly overmatched opponent in a freaking hurricane for cryin' out loud.  There's no sense in embarassing a conference opponent like that in their home stadium.

I know a lot of people are thrilled about such a blowout victory but I don't really see what it accomplishes.  Rutgers just came off a bad loss to Ohio State and I think it makes the conference look bad to run it up on the weakest opponent two weeks in a row.  Rutgers, with a new coach is not going to be able to attract ANY recruits that way.  And I think it benefits Michigan and the conference as a whole if the weaker teams can get better over time.  That doesnt happen with blowout losses.  If it gets out of hand against Illinois, Harbaugh should call off the dogs as well.

With all that being said - feel free to run it up on the likes of our rivals ND, Michigan State and Ohio State.
