Michigan 78, Rutgers 0

Rutgers punted 16 times tonight, surpassing the 1938 University of Chicago team for the second-most by a Michigan opponent in a single game.*
The University of Chicago abolished their football program in 1939.
Win with cruelty.

*Ohio State, with 21, is the record-holder thanks to the ludicrous 1950 Snow Bowl.

I think he went for two to make future opponents have to practice for it and consider it in their preperation. they have a handful of running backs, receivers, different qbs, wildcat peppers and now fake field goals. prepping for harbaugh's offense must really suck.

Next time, ask the guy behind you why scoring points, which is the whole point of the game, is classless.

I'm not sure it was a called play. I thought the holder had trouble with the snap so did what he was supposed to do in that situation.

The guys on the Michigan radio call seemed to think it was an automatic read -- like Blake O'Neill trying a fake punt against someone last year (Oregon St? UNLV?) on 4th and 17.
I love the idea that Michigan will read the defense on a try after touchdown. Why not? Look for every advantage you can get. Perhaps Michigan might beat OSU 22-21 on a similar play; who knows.
I would have been upset with it in the second half, but, as far as I'm concerned, the first half is fair game. Rutgers fans calling Harbaugh classless for that play had given up on the game early in the second quarter.

Rutgers fans had given up on this game early in the second quarter of their game the week before.

What is the record for difference in yards gained in one game? 561 has to be close to whatever it is.

Houston went over 1000 yards, but I can't find a boxscore.
The biggest discrepancy I can actually find is 701:

I would have guessed Georgia Tech/Cumberland, but apparently that was only 550. It's hard to believe they put up 222 points on less than 600 yards, but they ran back a lot of kicks for scores and their average starting field position was around the Cumberland 25 or so.

They led at halftime 59-14. They kept throwing the deep ball on the second half. Really classless.
It was SMU's first season back after the death or at and their entire team was freshmen and sophomores.

From the final ESPN stats: Rutgers only gained 26 inches per play.

That's 2/3rd of a yard. So, respectable.

We gained 2 points for every yard Rutgers gained - I just can't get enough of these stats.

We just made Ohio State feel insecure about a 58-0 win.
How cool is that?

And Ohio State. I don't like to see M beat up on the Rutgers of the world unless they can beat the chief rivals too. I have no problem running it up on the Buckeyes though

I didn't see the game but when I saw the score go up as the game went on, I thought to myself 'this is bordering on unsportsmanlike'. I think the final score goes beyond that and into unsportsmanlike territory. In my opinion if I was a coach I would never beat a team by more than 50. 49-0 is enough. 63-65 is about the limit. I don't think you should ever go over 70. I know he probably had all the backups in and this is about Harbaugh 'winning with cruelty' and constantly competing etc, etc, but this is a little too much. Harbaugh can learn to take the foot off the gas a little. I mean, its a clearly overmatched opponent in a freaking hurricane for cryin' out loud. There's no sense in embarassing a conference opponent like that in their home stadium.
I know a lot of people are thrilled about such a blowout victory but I don't really see what it accomplishes. Rutgers just came off a bad loss to Ohio State and I think it makes the conference look bad to run it up on the weakest opponent two weeks in a row. Rutgers, with a new coach is not going to be able to attract ANY recruits that way. And I think it benefits Michigan and the conference as a whole if the weaker teams can get better over time. That doesnt happen with blowout losses. If it gets out of hand against Illinois, Harbaugh should call off the dogs as well.
With all that being said - feel free to run it up on the likes of our rivals ND, Michigan State and Ohio State.

Michigan ran the ball all but three times in the second half with backups. If Rutgers refuses to tackle how can you stop someone from scoring?
