Wilton Speight appreciation thread
What a journey. Congrats to Wilton. This is the Harbaugh effect.
What a journey. From that to starter.

Harbaugh was told something similar to when he was late to a meeting with Bo pic.twitter.com/zfS2v04nvu

We may want to hold off for an official announcement.

Didn't you learn anything from Mr. Yost yesterday? WD also said it best in that thread. Brian backed the OP. That's all you need to know.

And if Harbaugh hasn't announced anything publicly, he may have a reason for that. Let's let the coach speak on the matter.

People will claim he doesn't want to show his hand and reference the "OR" on the first depth chart last year. Big difference is that Utah was a very challenging opponent and a little gamesmanship made sense. Hawaii doesn't exactly qualify for that treatment.

I hope this is sarcasm. Since when is Brian infallible?

Maybe wait for coach to actually announce it? Not doubting the source at all but this is classic cart before the horse.

I'm just glad we have a coach that I can say I have 100% faith in when it comes to QB development. I do think O'Korn has a higher ceiling, but I also believe whoever takes the first snap can get the job done. So congrats to Speight. Can't wait for next Saturday.

If Speight somehow doesn't start week one, I think WD should have to wash all our cars and mow all our lawns.

Not to knock Speight but the thing I'm happiest about regarding the news that Speight and Bredeson are likely the starters, is that the team isn't as direly thin at those positions as it could be. The last few years it has felt like if there is an OL or QB injury, the team is doomed and now there is at least one serviceable backup for each. Definietely don't want any injuries but besides LB I can't think of a position where 1 injury would be disastrous.
August 27th, 2016 at 1:44 PM ^
I would appreciate if this waited until:
A. The coach actually announces it.
B. Speight actually plays a down as a starter.
We've been the butt of jokes for preseason awards and recognition way too long for this type of stuff. Let's let the season and roster play out.
Also, as probable as this is true, why would you post someone else's inside info (still technically a rumor) on twitter?

Embarassing really.

That his mechanics continue to be worked on. He has such a wonky motion. It's almost like he pushes it more than he just naturally throws the ball.
If he wants to be a special QB that's more than just a "game manager," that motion needs some smoothing out.
August 27th, 2016 at 2:25 PM ^
I don't like this kind of logic. A throwing motion doesn't determine whether you're a "game manager" or not. Philip Rivers is more than a game manager, and he has a funky throwing motion. Tim Tebow was a great college QB and had a funky throwing motion.
What a QB needs in order to be more than a game manager is an ability to get the ball to the right guy, throw TDs, and not turn the ball over. If he throws sidearm, overhand, underhand, left-handed, or with both hands, scoring and avoiding turnovers are the important things.
August 27th, 2016 at 2:39 PM ^
With a bad throwing motion. If he ever wants to become elite, he has to fix it. For everyone 1 or 2 that you can dig up, I'll point to another 50 that have the correct motion.
August 27th, 2016 at 2:47 PM ^
- "You can't be elite with a wonky throwing motion."
- "Yes you can"
- "Prove it! And even if you do, I still refuse to believe it."

Didn't know Speight had to be a Manning-level QB to win games in the Big 10. back to the drawing board.
August 27th, 2016 at 3:07 PM ^
Again, this is faulty logic.
I just named a Pro Bowl QB and a Heisman winning QB who have faulty throwing motions. But they get/got the job done at a high level.
Bottom line: Wilton Speight, with his "wonky" throwing motion, is the best QB on a team that includes a former blue-chip recruit (Shane Morris), a fairly highly touted transfer (John O'Korn), and a high-quality freshman (Brandon Peters). If his throwing motion were such a detriment to a 10-3 team, then he probably wouldn't be the [presumed] starter for a team with a QB guru as a head coach.
