OT: Remember to Say Thanks to Jim Delany (Rutgers Insider)
An interesting read* from the Rutger's perspective surrounding the current chaos in the Big XII regarding their desicion of whether to expand or not and a look back at how Rutgers itself could have easily been one of the teams HOPING to join the dysfunction versus being a member of the B1G (and all the accompanying benefits).

As I was reading the different ideas of who would be invited to join, how it will help or hurt the conference, and the instability it may create in other conferences, I suddenly realized- hey, that was us just a few years ago!
Remember? Back just five years ago, when the Big East began
to implode when Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced their
departure for the ACC. Then TCU spurned the Big East to
join the Big XII, quickly followed by the exit of West
Virginia leaving for the Big XII. It was an ugly time or
Rutgers fans. What will happen? Where will we end up?
Then, just 3 ½ years ago, we received the biggest gift the
school had received since Colonel Rutgers donated the money
to revive the college back in the 1820s. Jim Delany, New Jersey
native and Big Ten Commissioner came calling with an invite
to the Big Ten conference."

So, I STILL hate that they rushed the field on their first win against us in NJ (Uggg) and them in general... but a least maybe I understand them a bit more.

Maryland last class. They hired Schiano to compete in NJ. They and MSU have had more success than us recruiting PA.
Even though we're a national program, it's not logical to discount the conference's footprint. Michigan has only gotten one highly rated player from Utah since they moved to the PAC-12, Houma was the lowest ranked player in our class with only a couple of Power 5 offers. Perhaps it has gotten tougher to recruit Utah. Colorado was already in the Big XII. Not sure how their move would matter. Adding Texas (c'mon we're not adding Houston, but they help too) would help us develop a pipeline in Texas. I have no doubt of that.
The Big Ten schools were not the closest to NJ before expansion. Other than PSU there are closer ACC schools surrounding them Yes, Nebraska is not a perfect example. They had a lot of competition from Texas schools for that talent. One thing is clear, playing in the region helped them recruit there. It makes sense, just like our playing more eastern teams will help up us recruit there.
We play in their backyard every year, either in NJ or in nearby MD. Of course it helps.
Michigan is now perceived as a "local" team.

Colonel Rutgers, a devout member of the church with a reputation for philanthropy, for aid. Rutgers donated a bond valued at $5000 to reopen the faltering school, and subsequently donated a bronze bell that was hung in the cupola of the Old Queens building which housed the college. In gratitude, and hoping the college would be remembered in the Colonel's will, the trustees renamed it Rutgers College on December 5, 1825. (Colonel Rutgers left nothing to the college upon his death.)
Sounds like Colonel Rutgers even came to his senses at the end.

Anyone in the B1G that would actually thank Jim Delany for anything but bringing boatloads of cash should be kicked out of the B1G. Post Haste. And yes, this includes the hearty 'thank you' that OSU surely delivered for the Sugar Bowl.
He should be the CFO, not the CEO...
hope you are wrong.. MSU has a very up and down history. Every major conference has teams that have either recently emerged as powers or are struggling to reclaim thier status. Football is cyclical for a majority of schools, but not for everyone.
Rutgers, like those Texas schools, has a lot of local HS talent. It seems to me that NJ didn't used to be nearly as good a recruiting area as it is now.

Instead of watching all of the programs of value running away to better conferences, we are part of the best academic and athletic conference. That's right, boys and girls, the team that played in the first football game is now a part of the first football conference!
I mean, as much ridicule as we hand to Rutgers - nearly all of it deserved thanks to their own behavior - the author probably isnt' wrong in that joining the Big Ten probably gave Rutgers their best chance of maybe someday becoming....something. Even if it isn't a great chance (it likely is not), this is probably the best situation they could hope for on a lot of levels even if we aren't fans of their presence.

I can't seem to grasp how Rutgers will benefit by us talking about them on the MGoBoard, nor do I see them weakening by us ignoring them. They are irrelevant, always have been, always will be.
Is there anyone other than the most delusional Rutgers fans who honestly believes they will ever win the BigTen Football Championship? IU hasn't even won it since sharing it back in '67, nearly 50 years ago. What is there that indicates Rutgers will ever do any better than IU?
