Not sure I buy it. I just read the mission statement of the 'black student association' and it's tough to see a clear difference (in terms of discrimination) from the mission statement of the 'south Asian women's collective'. I mean if all these groups just add a token 'and promote interaction with the entire community' are they allowed to stay?

White students can belong to the black students association. Women can't belong to the fox. The fox undergrads cited to "punch" some women but the slums were so put out they shut down the club rather than let a woman join.

it's not just the statement of inclusion they attach. I had a neighbor at markley who was white yet joined the black student org. She wasn't treated differently. However, i would assume a 'white student association' or a frat that's entirely white would basically be a white supremacist club and if there's well paying jobs attached to that which other students are denied, i would shut it down too.

Can't wait to watch the political correctness wave die. Then slingshot towards the other extreme.

I went there for undergrad and it's designed to really force the final clubs to allow females. The administration has been working towards this for years, but has only so much leverage because the final clubs aren't officially affiliated with Harvard College anymore.

I think the Fox has or will start "punching " female students (admitting not physically punching). It's unfortunate because I think that coed clubs will take away from the benefits that clubs offer to members. It would be similar to frats and sororities becoming coed. I just don't see the value added by forcing clubs to go coed.

With this and the stuff that went on at Northwestern, someone should be able to come up with a script for a PCU sequel.

I thought about this also. At a public school, I think this kind of policy would be reviewed under strict scrutiny and almost certainly found unconstitutional. But as Generic points out, the First Amendment only applies to state action and Harvard is a private school. It might be possible to challenge the rule in limited contexts--for instance, if Harvard has specific programs or offices that receive extensive government funding, that involve intensive collaboration with gov't agencies, that perform functions traditionally performed by gov't, etc., then a person might be able to argue that Harvard is a state actor with respect to those particular activities and cannot apply this rule to associated student leadership positions.

I haven't clicked through, but Harvard is a private institution, so it would be kind of hard for it to violate its students' first amendment rights by doing something like this.

ETA: Ah, left the window open and came back to the computer. I see I'm way too late on this...

This is about the "final clubs." I don't know much about such clubs but from her description it basically sounded like they have 20 (or whatever) gender-segregated Michagamuas running around. Frat culture there isn't comparable to a Big Ten school.

Now that I think about it, this is pretty much pointless. The majority of members are "punched" during their sophomore year, and a few as juniors. Most athletes become captains during their senior season, with a few juniors.
So I guess the captains going forward will be the ones who aren't members.
