OT: BMX legend, Dave Mirra passed away.
This guy was awesome. My friends and I had a lot of good memeories growing up watching Mirra. From playing his video games on PS2 to watching him on TV when the X Games were cooler to watch. He'll be missed.

Great post Mr. Bear, I echo what's been said: you're an asset to our community. The number you shared has provided help to numerous friends of mine. Thank you.

This, Brown Bear, is the best post on this subject...for the way you finish. Nicely done, sir. I commend you.

I would say head injury had something to do with this, likely a lot to do with it. Had a friend from high school and my buddy's uncle kill themselves in the past couple of years; it's something that just doesn't make sense to most people.
After watching the 30 for 30 last night about the 85 Bears and hearing McMahon talk about the headaches and brain trauma, it starts to make some sense what these guys feel after taking that kind of punishment. The brain scans showing the fluid gathering in the brain due to blockage was some scary shit. Makes me glad I didn't play in college.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Seems sudden and not a lot of people knew he was having trouble. I just read that he was talking to the mayor of Greeneville CA a few hours before he committed suicide. They talked about future plans for things he wanted to do with the kids in the town. He had to have been dealing with a lot and held it all in.

he didn't "pass away", he gave himself the business end of a gun.
This may be insensative, but I have zero sympathy for those who take this way out, especially leaving behind a wife and kids.

At least you nailed it with your signature.
February 5th, 2016 at 9:50 AM ^
people who commit suicide have a very myopic, almost selfish view. They don't realize how much this act permanantly scars those around them who love them and are trying to help them.
I feel bad for his wife and kids because their father didn't love them enough to deal with his problems/issues the right way, instead chosing to check out and leave them to deal with the damage.

All the more reason to stick to the ones you love you the most and use them as your center. He had a level of celebrity that allowed him access to help that the normal person probably doesn't have.
I don't feel bad for people who have done this. I feel bad for their familys who are left to deal with the wreckage and aftermath, but the act itself.

You really should delete your account. This is the most uninformed rant I have seen in a long time. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to mental illness.
February 5th, 2016 at 10:17 AM ^
I'll get right on that, right after I cure cancer, balance the budget, and foster world peace. In no way is this a rant, but wow the keyboard warriors come out in full force when an opinion contrary to the popular belief is posted.

again, like i stated without being a keyboard tough guy, it's my opinion.

No you're not being a keyboard tough guy. You're an uninformed dick. Pick up a book and read about depression and how it affects people. Read about the thought process of people that have contemplated suicide but didn't go through with it. You will see a reoccurring theme of depressed people thinking that committing suicide is their only option. They believe that they are not worthy of this world and that by killing themselves they will instantly better the lives of those around them and make this world a better place.
February 5th, 2016 at 10:26 AM ^
Didn't ask you to do any of those things. In fact, given how your "opinion" regarding the selfish nature of suicide is in direct opposition to actual scientific literature (you should hit up pubmed for a bit), it would be a good idea if you didn't embark on any of those tasks - the results would not be stellar.

Lots of "educated" hubris riddled know it alls. Lots of people struggle with mental illness..seek help. I guess not over coming a stigma and seeking help but instead offing yourself and passing that pain onto your wife and children isn't selfish at all. Newsfalsh: mentally ill people and drug addicts can also do selfish things. Stop defending the indefensible. Cause guess what? His kids' chances of also commiting suicide just increased exponentially. Or, did you skip that chapter in your elite education?

Not trolling, it's my opinion on the subject which I'm allowed to post until deemed otherwise. I don't need to post to feel good about myself, I already have that covered without needing to be the "cool guy of the message board".

Can I get your mom's number when your done with your tongue lashing and childish attacks. Maybe the guy your talking to is dealing with his own "demons" and you just sent him over the edge? Maybe you're an asshole and all opinions should first go through your omniscient, arrogant ass? Or, maybe you shoudn't get on here and grieve publically if you can't handle those with a differing opiinion?
Now, about your mom...
February 5th, 2016 at 9:58 AM ^
Wow dude. You're so off base here.
I know people who have been hit by this. Nothing selfish about it in about 99.9% of the cases.
February 5th, 2016 at 10:08 AM ^
so have I with both family and friends.
in each case, they chose this option over relying on the ones who love them the most to help them get through whatever hell they're going through.
it's not the popular opinion, but it's my opinion. Sorry I'm not a lemming like most of this board.

Friends and family can only help so much. Thankfully, that's why we have mental healthcare professionals and medications available to aid in the process of improving one's outlook on things.
There is no cure - just treatment.
Get a clue, asshole.

Mental illness and depression are very real and very scary.
I should know because I've battled depression for the last 15 years, and let me tell you, there have been moments (albeit brief) where the thought has crossed my mind.
Therapy and medication has helped, along with exercise.
When you hit rock bottom, let us know if you'll be labeling yourself as selfish.
It's a fucking difficult struggle and there's no cure - treatment is available, but chemical imbalances are very real, no matter how much Tom Cruise wants to deny it.

"people who commit suicide have a very myopic, almost selfish view"
Maybe read up on the scientific literature related to suicide a little bit. It will help inform your opinion past the overly simplistic one you currently hold.
People commit suicide for countless different reasons. In many cases, the final act is the result of a culmination of risk factors (e.g., mental illness, social isolation, drug/alchol abuse, relationship problems) with a compulsive, last minute desicion sealing their fate.
And to your point about the selfish nature of the act, these people often genuinely feel as though their loved ones would be better off and happier without them. Suicide survivors often say that in the moment they truly felt like they were making the best decision possible for them and even their spouses and children.
February 5th, 2016 at 10:13 AM ^
They feel like it would be a huge burden lifted off of their loved ones.
It's very sad but true.

You are a complete idiot and have no clue what you are talking about. People that contemplate or commit suicide believe that they are doing their loved ones a favor by removing themselves from the relationship. They believe that this is the only option and that by killing themselves they will improve the lives of those around them.

I take it you have never dealt with or studied depression.
February 5th, 2016 at 10:20 AM ^
I'm jealous of your ability to see things in such simple terms. Must be a weight off your shoulders, not having to think about things with any amount of depth.
February 5th, 2016 at 10:18 AM ^
You should've stopped.
You simply can't lump everyone together like that on anything. For every person you may think is weak-minded or lazy...I'll find plenty more that have a chemical imbalance in their brain they cannot control.
Depression isn't just a mood. Much of it can be completely and 100% involuntary and something you can't change (without help and medication) any more than you can change your blood type.
Read a fucking book. Before you do, stop generalizing so damn much.

“The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.”
