Partridge addresses Recruiting (TomVh article)

Submitted by RED DAWN on

"You have to continue to work," Partridge said. "You can't just shut things down when you get a scholarship offer. You still have to hold up your end of the bargain academically and athletically."

Partridge said parents of other Michigan commitments have been in touch to ask about the incidents -- and to notify them of negative recruiting efforts by other schools.

"It just shows us that, if we weren't doing a good job then they wouldn't be doing that kind of stuff," Partridge said. "We're doing a good job. We had a phenomenal season and I think people must be a little intimidated because they're really going into their imagination to make stuff up. I feel very strongly about Coach Harbaugh and the direction we're headed, and we just plan to stay the course."

"With Jabrill, I'd be sitting in the room and people would pull out booklets and PowerPoints trying to recruit against other schools," he said. "One time a coach had a booklet with a cover page, beautiful binding, that he gave to me and Jabrill. I started to go through it and it was all bashing the five other schools Jabrill was considering.

"I grabbed the book from Jabrill, grabbed mine and threw [them] in the trash and told the coach that we would now like to hear about his school."

Partridge says Harbaugh told his staff not to attempt to combat negative recruiting, which he said isn't part of Michigan's strategy.

Pointing out all the NFL experience on Michigan's staff is not negative recruiting. Picking a specific staffer at another team and breaking down his resume in detail is negative recruiting.

Negative recruiting is not the same as lying. Partridge's example of throwing away the negative recruiting presentation says nothing about it being lies. His question to the recruiter was tell us the about your team not the other team.

And he wasn't talking about Austin mack's recruitment either. If you are calling what partridge mentioned and what fisch put out the same thing, then I think you are horibbly confused. Selling is about pointing out why your product is better than the other guys product is. For example, if a car salesman tells you his model has a v8, but the competitor's car only has a v6, that's not negative. That's him telling you why his is better.

Props to Partridge and Harbaugh for sticking to their guns and defending their recruiting strategy. As long as there is an open, ongoing dialogue on both sides regarding expectations for both the recruit and the coaching staff, I don't have a problem with what Harbaugh is doing. Harbaugh was brought here to win titles and field the best possible team that he can. Sometimes in order to do that you have to make extremely tough decisions.

If other schools want to spend their time bashing Michigan rather than talk about what they have to offer, then that should tell you what kind of program and coaching staff that is. If you have something to offer to a recruit, there really isn't a need to even mention another school's name.

I coached a kid this past year who had offers from every big time program. He had a chance to meet with coaches from every conference. I asked him who did the most negative recruiting. He would not give me names of specific coaches, but said the SEC by far.

I do like how much Partridge has grown in his role on the staff and the sense of loyalty he shows. Says a lot about Harbaugh's leadership.

Partridge was clearly not implicating our enemies with this story of booklet-gate.  Sparty or Bucky  would have book made of construction paper with stick figures drawn in crayon.

I can just see the PowerPoint presentation now. "Jabrill Peppers is a baller" in glorious word art spinning on to the screen complete with wooshing sound effects. I'm surprised he didn't drop everything and commit right on the spot!

"One time a coach had a booklet with a cover page, beautiful binding..."

Isn't there a problem when the recruiting materials for your school are better quality than the books that the kids will read for classes?

For the sake of this thread I'll be a bit of the Devils Advocate here. I think it's important to distinguish between lying/rumor mongering versus pointing out factual distinctions between programs. Almost all programs will have some of downside. The programs themselves aren't going to draw attention to those negatives. At some point if the kid is going to get an accurate picture of the pros & cons of each program, he's gotta hear it from somewhere. I think a classy way to do it is to put a "contrast table" up and list The top 2-4 schools a kid is considering, and then point out how your own school stacks up well against the others. So in that sense, I don't think talking about other schools and delivering negative information to the kid is bad Per Se. The context is what matters, and the rumor mongering/planting seeds of paranoia in a kid's mind is what I think we should avoid. But as I recall, last year we saw samples of "contrast pieces" right here on the board that Michigan sent to recruits contrasting our coaching staff experience with OSU.

Are you talking about the graphic that Fisch sent out?  That did not please me and i hope that is not the direction Michigan is taking.

It's one thing to tell a recruit how much NFL experience the staff has and how it ranks in the B1G or P5 conferences in general.  Its another to specifically call out other coaches and staffs.

some of the comments are funny. So, anyone who is upset about negative recruiting or the tactics to solidify pledges should consider the level of competition in your workplace and the type of tactics taken to close a deal, make a sale, etc. (insert obligatory comment about recruiting involving kids who are innocent and pure here).

Competition and negative sales/recruiting pitches are just a part of a competitive environment at all ages, locations, and types of business.
