the rumor that if Jackson does not get promoted he is out anyway? If the choice is promote Greg Jackson or get Pruitt, what would you do? ( I do realise there are other options, just asking hypothetically)

I've only heard it on this site and it involved Durkin wanting him to be his DC. That isn't happening. It makes sense that Jackson would leave if he was offered a DC job at a decent program. Otherwise why should he go? It doesn't make sense to me that he would expect to be our DC already.

I'm not overthinking it. Zordich and Jackson have never been linebackers coaches (EDIT: Jackson spent one season at Tulane as a LB/ST coach). Nor has Pruitt. You don't put guys at brand new positions at Michigan without some serious risks to player development. Just ask Roy Manning.

I think the problem with this scenario is that we still do not have a LB coach. The NCAA limits the number of coaches you can have, therefore by adding Pruitt as a DC to replace Durkin as DC / LB Coach, we would be unable to add a LB coach due to those limitations. We would still have to get rid of somebody in order to add a LB coach.

You can only have 10 coaches. We currently have:

1. Jim Harbaugh, HC/QB
2. Fisch, Co-OC/WR
3. Drevno, Co-OC/OL
4. Jay Harbaugh, TE
5. Wheatley, RB
6. Mattison, DL/temporary DC
7. ??? (Partridge), LB
8. Zordich, CB
9. Jackson, S
10. Baxter, ST

Plug in Partridge full-time, and there's no room for Pruitt. Remove Partridge, and you can add Pruitt but then you need someone to move to LB coach.

... and this is kind of embarrassing to admit, but I pretty much always think it's actually a picture of Magnus, and I only ever remember that it's Brandon Graham upon rare acts of reflection.

(This of course assumes that Brandon Graham doesn't have a robust blogging hobby on the side, under the aliases of "Magnus" and "Thunder.")

I think we may see some coach turnover after the season anyway. Mattison may retire after the bowl game, Fisch may go to the NFL.  That will give the room needed to add a coach but the question would be on how good Partridge is and/or who will coach the WR's.

at quick glance, it appears Jay Harbaugh, then the S coach Jackson, may be the most expendable, should they choose to bring on Pruitt.   Maybe Jay moves on to a promotion somewhere else.  And cant they get away with one DB coach, either Zordich or Jackson?

So Jay Harbaugh after 1 year as a position coach is going to leave and do what? I don't think he has many other options right now and I doubt his dad is going to fire him, especially considering how well the TE's did this year.

Yes, you can get away with one DB coach, but that doesn't solve the problem. All the holes still need to be filled. So many people here are missing the big picture. It's not about ONE guy. It's about how all the pieces fit together.

But it's never made sense to me how a DB coach couldn't coach linebackers. How could a guy who's played football his whole life not know the entire defense. Pro bowl player, been a part of many defenses, thousands of meeting rooms, being constantly trained to work as a unit. I mean should every player know who's doing what, when and where around him? Again, I'm not saying move Jackson to LB coach but I have a hard time believing he wouldn't know what to do or wouldn't do well at it. Same goes for Pruitt. If a DC doesn't know what he wants his dlinemen to do then..... Wow. All the film studies and practice and you don't know what they should be doing? You suck! You don't have to have played the position or coached it before, you just need the knowledge. Just my opinion of course.

is a good coach. I wouldn't say the linebackers this year did any better, unlike the secondary who did. When we were getting ran on this year the linebackers looked bad! I don't know the stats, or feel like looking them up, but I'd guess their play was pretty close to the same as last year. Imo the secondary made the biggest strides this year. If you can coach kids to execute then you can coach kids to execute.

coach. You're saying that it doesn't matter where you put the defensive coaches, because good ones will perform equally well at any spot.

I think that defies common sense. A good coach could learn to coach another position, yes. But he's not going to be as good at it immediately as he will be after having experience.

Magnus,

I know that you follow this much more closely than I ...

Is there an experienced DC candidate out there who has had teams with good overall defenses with success defending spread offenses in particular, who might realistically be persuaded to move to Michigan if not already in the Midwest, and who has good recruiting contacts/experience in areas of interest (ie. Ohio, Florida, Texas, California)??

A tall order, I know, but just wondering...

Thanks.
