Not in Division 1 football it isn't.
December 9th, 2015 at 5:03 PM ^
the rumor that if Jackson does not get promoted he is out anyway? If the choice is promote Greg Jackson or get Pruitt, what would you do? ( I do realise there are other options, just asking hypothetically)
December 9th, 2015 at 5:22 PM ^
I would take Jeremy Pruitt but keep my thumb on him so he doesn't do anything stupid.
December 9th, 2015 at 5:41 PM ^
I've only heard it on this site and it involved Durkin wanting him to be his DC. That isn't happening. It makes sense that Jackson would leave if he was offered a DC job at a decent program. Otherwise why should he go? It doesn't make sense to me that he would expect to be our DC already.
December 9th, 2015 at 11:48 PM ^
know how credible the rumor is, I know it came from Sam Webb. You do make a good point, now that Durkin has hired a DC I don't know how many other teams are knocking our doors down for him.

GMatt was with the Ravens from 2008 to 2010 then came to UM in 2011. Ravens won the SB in 2000 and 2012.

Guy must be terrble. He only has a National Championship ring to fall back on from 2006 at Florida.
Broyles nomination in 2012...
December 9th, 2015 at 8:16 PM ^
Jake Ryan was on the roster last year. Not this year. That by itself could make a big difference in the quality of LB play.
December 9th, 2015 at 2:39 PM ^
...then the problem just shifts to "There's no obvious defensive line coach."

Step 2????
Step 3 $$$$

He may be available, plus we probably have a right to offset his salary against his payout, so he'd be working for free.
December 9th, 2015 at 4:22 PM ^
Anyone have Brady Hoke's phone number???? He would walk to Michigan.
December 9th, 2015 at 2:07 PM ^
Didn't look like we had one this past year either.

December 9th, 2015 at 2:16 PM ^
You're overthinking things. Guys can be moved around, especially with Mattison on staff.
December 9th, 2015 at 2:48 PM ^
I'm not overthinking it. Zordich and Jackson have never been linebackers coaches (EDIT: Jackson spent one season at Tulane as a LB/ST coach). Nor has Pruitt. You don't put guys at brand new positions at Michigan without some serious risks to player development. Just ask Roy Manning.
December 9th, 2015 at 2:50 PM ^
I think the obvious plan would be (and, remember, we're stacking inference upon inference here) is that Pruitt is DC and CB coach, Jackson remains with S, Mattison retains DL and Partridge stays on to coach LBs.
December 9th, 2015 at 2:53 PM ^
...and Zordich gets fired.
After coaching up an All-American corner and turning Jeremy Clark from a backup safety into a 6'4", solid cornerback.
December 9th, 2015 at 3:03 PM ^
after the bowl game.
Then Pruitt is just a DC while not coaching any positions. Is that an unusual circumstance? I'm really asking and not at all trying to be facetious.
December 9th, 2015 at 3:20 PM ^
I think the problem with this scenario is that we still do not have a LB coach. The NCAA limits the number of coaches you can have, therefore by adding Pruitt as a DC to replace Durkin as DC / LB Coach, we would be unable to add a LB coach due to those limitations. We would still have to get rid of somebody in order to add a LB coach.
December 9th, 2015 at 3:27 PM ^
You can only have 10 coaches. We currently have:
1. Jim Harbaugh, HC/QB
2. Fisch, Co-OC/WR
3. Drevno, Co-OC/OL
4. Jay Harbaugh, TE
5. Wheatley, RB
6. Mattison, DL/temporary DC
7. ??? (Partridge), LB
8. Zordich, CB
9. Jackson, S
10. Baxter, ST
Plug in Partridge full-time, and there's no room for Pruitt. Remove Partridge, and you can add Pruitt but then you need someone to move to LB coach.

Who the fuck is negging you for pointing out the truth regarding our coaching situation?
December 9th, 2015 at 4:01 PM ^
The same person/people who negs me for everything I say. I'm used to it.
December 9th, 2015 at 4:22 PM ^
Agree with me or I neg you! Free speech is great as long as you agree with a Millennials point of view. Man I feel old after writing that...

... and this is kind of embarrassing to admit, but I pretty much always think it's actually a picture of Magnus, and I only ever remember that it's Brandon Graham upon rare acts of reflection.
(This of course assumes that Brandon Graham doesn't have a robust blogging hobby on the side, under the aliases of "Magnus" and "Thunder.")
December 9th, 2015 at 10:44 PM ^
but some of the blog trolls have figured out they need to get to that magic 100.
December 9th, 2015 at 3:53 PM ^
a guy like pruitt could be DC and special teams and give baxter the gold watch retirement.
December 9th, 2015 at 4:17 PM ^
I wonder if Zordich could coach LBs?
December 9th, 2015 at 4:30 PM ^
I think we may see some coach turnover after the season anyway. Mattison may retire after the bowl game, Fisch may go to the NFL. That will give the room needed to add a coach but the question would be on how good Partridge is and/or who will coach the WR's.
December 9th, 2015 at 5:23 PM ^
That doesn't really fix the problem, though. Because then you need to hire a coaches or coaches to replace Mattison and Fisch.
December 9th, 2015 at 4:56 PM ^
at quick glance, it appears Jay Harbaugh, then the S coach Jackson, may be the most expendable, should they choose to bring on Pruitt. Maybe Jay moves on to a promotion somewhere else. And cant they get away with one DB coach, either Zordich or Jackson?
December 9th, 2015 at 5:08 PM ^
So Jay Harbaugh after 1 year as a position coach is going to leave and do what? I don't think he has many other options right now and I doubt his dad is going to fire him, especially considering how well the TE's did this year.
December 9th, 2015 at 5:24 PM ^
Yes, you can get away with one DB coach, but that doesn't solve the problem. All the holes still need to be filled. So many people here are missing the big picture. It's not about ONE guy. It's about how all the pieces fit together.
December 9th, 2015 at 7:51 PM ^
The last page of this thread is stupifying.
December 9th, 2015 at 3:12 PM ^
In the hypothetical situation I've just outlined, you sacrifice a stellar position coach for a stellar defensive coordinator, yes. I don't disagree that it would be a gamble. But it's not ridiculous.

If you read how this began, you'll see that I said hiring Pruitt would present an "interesting situation." I didn't say that Michigan shouldn't hire him.
December 9th, 2015 at 4:25 PM ^
Yeah there would have to be some other new addition to the staff (with obviously someone else leaving) to make it all work.
December 9th, 2015 at 4:38 PM ^
December 9th, 2015 at 5:25 PM ^
Why did Roy Manning struggle to coach cornerbacks? He played defense all his life, played in the NFL, etc.
December 9th, 2015 at 5:46 PM ^
December 9th, 2015 at 5:51 PM ^
coaching DL is not appreciably better at it than a very good coach who has only worked with the DBs or with LBs? There's a lot more involved than telling them where they should be on the field.

coach. You're saying that it doesn't matter where you put the defensive coaches, because good ones will perform equally well at any spot.
I think that defies common sense. A good coach could learn to coach another position, yes. But he's not going to be as good at it immediately as he will be after having experience.
December 10th, 2015 at 9:59 AM ^
Right. A Gold Glove shortstop can also probably be a good second baseman or third baseman, but that doesn't mean he's going to be a Gold Glove third baseman instantly.
December 9th, 2015 at 2:28 PM ^
Magnus,
I know that you follow this much more closely than I ...
Is there an experienced DC candidate out there who has had teams with good overall defenses with success defending spread offenses in particular, who might realistically be persuaded to move to Michigan if not already in the Midwest, and who has good recruiting contacts/experience in areas of interest (ie. Ohio, Florida, Texas, California)??
A tall order, I know, but just wondering...
Thanks.
