OT: Spurrier retiring...immediately????

Submitted by julesh on

Per @WesMitchellGC and I, we have confirmed that Steve Spurrier plans to retire. No timeline immediately known. He informed team tonight.

I'm worried that there are way too many openings and people are going to be sniffing around all the assistants, but especially Durkin.

Edit: I'm not sure how we are feeling about Football Scoop around here, but...

FootballScoop has learned that South Carolina will name their interim head coach tomorrow morning http://t.co/sD4KPc0THi

...will be hired by someone sooner than later. An assistant with his pedigree and success will attract all kinds of interest. And that is the price for hiring great assistants. When the time comes Harbaugh will replace him with someone special.

I think Durk stays a little longer than we think. Look at Kirby smart at bama he is still waiting for the right opportunity. Durkin has full control of a great defense at a blue blood program. Getting paid pretty well I'm sure too. We will see

But if I'm Durkin I'm going to stay at Michigan a little while and build up my resume as a Harbaugh protege.  That way I can have my pick of top jobs that fit me, like Hanlon going to Houston, and not have to take a risk on tire fires like Maryland and Purdue.

I bet he wants to retire before he was at SC as long as he was at Florida. That makes sense. He was the most successful coach the Cocks ever had, I think.

There will be a lot of celebration time going on around the Midlands. While I think many USC fans hold the 'Ol Ball Coach in high regard, many of them think he needs to retire. Me? I can't stand USC, I'm true blue and if they're not playing head-to-head I'll cheer for them Clemson Tigers.

Gamecocks indeed are to Clemson as MSU is to UM. I like Clemson because like UM they have tradition and have actually won something. USC has won exactly 2 conference championships, one in 1933 and one in 1969. They have won the SEC East once. Have finished in AP top 25 exactly 9 times...ever. They've only won 8 bowl games in their entire history. I'd say act like you've been there Fighting Chicken fan but you haven't. Seriously, before 2011 USC won more than 9 games it looks like once, under Joe Morrison in 1984. USC is the very definition of mediocrity.

I take it back, USC is not like MSU. They're more like Indiana. At least MSU won championships once upon a time and are even relevant today.

How severe are these heart issues that always get brought up? Zero sarcasm, 100% legit question. I ask because I know he had that heart attack (heart attack, correct?) a few years ago but it seems like it wasn't a major one. I know there isn't such kind as a minor or "not bad" heart attack but you do have the "dead or lucky that you lived but put ZERO strain on your heart from here out" types. I don't think he had one of those but they gave him a stint and medication, correct? I know he hates us but I doubt he'd die to keep coaching lol. That makes me think he's very likely capable of working like most men his age. I've never had the feeling that his heart was a real issue wrt coaching but I ask because I could be ignorant to some of the facts. I remember not really reading too much about it because even though I hate the guy, I only hate him in the football sense. I don't wish health issues on anyone so I didn't crack jokes and treated it like it wasn't my business. ~~~~~ON AN UNRELATED SIDE NOTE~~~~~ I will joke about Meyer because I think it's mostly bogus or completely self-inflicted stress based symptoms due to knowing he was running a penal-league program at Florida. I think that mixed with the lies to keep kids on the field, to recruits and himself ate away at him. Mostly? I think he freaked out when Saban moved in next door, immediately recruited well and was curbing his Tebow led teams by year two. Everyone (even osu fans that hated him but act like they never did) knew he fled the SEC. He can't stand not being the biggest guy in a conference. He gets challenged 3, maybe 4 times a year at osu. He knew UF was sinking and he couldn't let that be on his resume', on his watch, but it was. Finally, it's clear that ND forced Kelly to hey on Xanax (lmfao). After the year of the purple tirades he's suddenly a bit chill. He wants to freak out but the Xanax makes him simply look at the kids like their stupid, call them stupid and movev on. If not for that Kelly would be 6 feet under already. That dude's medicated on gameday lol.

Well, Bo had two heart attacks but kept coaching awhile, despite the advice of his doctors. These guys can be pretty stubborn. A high-stress job like this can't be too healthy for the heart, especially since coaches probably aren't eating too well when they're working 15 hour days during the season.

Has been retired the last three years, minus having to attend games, practices, press conferences, media days, and the occasional booster functions. So now, South Carolina wants to make it official by having him officially "retire" and not have to pay him his full salary anymore?

teams at Florida were damn fun to watch.  Never got a QB to committ to South Carolina.

His press conferences the week befor they played Tennessee were always gold.

I just wish UNC could have beaten him before he left. I have a kid at UNC, the real "Carolina."  It would have been nice if Carolina could have sent Spurrier out with a loss.

Honestly, though, Spurrier is very entertaining. I hope he does some TV commentary or something.

SBNation has some of the stuff gleaned from South Carolina blogs - LINK

"An interim head coach will be named Tuesday morning at 8:30 ET," FootballScoop.com reports, which would seem to indicate this is happening, uh, now. FS also tweeted that this is "effective immediately."

This seems very sudden, so I am interested as to whether or not we'll hear what has spurred this on.
