BYU @ UCLA - Open Thread

Submitted by soupsnake on
There's over 700 posts in the night games thread. Some people were asking for a dedicated thread for next week's opponent. Here you go. BYU up 10-3 at halftime

Do I want UCLA to win, thus reassuring me that we *might* be able to win next week? Or do I want BYU to win, so that in the event that we *do* win next week, it indicates the maximum amount of progress from today's underwhelming victory?

I honestly think we'll win. But that right there is an if. As big an if as D Rose being able to play in 10 straight games.

I think this is an overused comparison but Mangum really reminds me of rookie Ben Roethlisberger minus the wizardry to get out of tackles. These are pretty good defenses he's moving the ball on, this was the OOC game that really gave me the willies going into the season.

we'd be 2-2 at best and that's very likely. Oddly, I was more sure of a Utah loss than BYU but I think we could and should have beat Utah. I don't think they're THAT good! A solid top-30 team but nothing like I'd thought they'd be. BYU really concerns me as I had them as the team we'd beat if we started 3-1, no chance to beat Utah. Now? It's reversed. We should have beat Utah and I think BYU comes in and wins a comfortable game (unless Rudock plays lights out). I'd call it a rather big upset win for us if we won and that's crazy considering BYU isn't a world beater and it's a home game. They're a well coached team in a program that has an identity. They'll never get beat up. Nobody will have them playing timid, win or lose. They're tough, well coached and take what their opponents give them. If Harbaugh and Durkin have been holding back some secret sauce I think it's time to use it. I don't think they have any (I think they've actually been very limited in what they can call) so I don't see us running well enough to force BYU to load the box. I think they'll hold us to 2-3 YPC with their front 7 and bet that Rudock can't beat them. If that happens (even if not) they'll still score points so unless Jake can guide us to 28+ I don't think we can pull this out. We NEED pressure with our front 4. They have huge WRs that we can't single up without helping them. Stribling/Clark can stand with them but Lewis is a liability despite being our best cover corner/DB. I'd line Taco wide and Lawrence Taylor/Aldon Smith him - sick the QB! Sick 'em! Every down ha.

Honestly I'm just worried that Mangum (heh heh, Man-gum) seems to be the real deal, and not a crippling step down from Taysom Hill.

UCLA is probably vastly overrated, and playing a poor game on top of it, but BYU might still be the third best team left on the schedule.

will be seen again if we play Oregon State again. His style doesn't lend itself to games like that against a defense that isn't undersized, arguably not mentally "in" the game, lacking talent, tired and just not good. Heck of a performance but everybody was trucking that defense lol. I think Bunting had a few solid truck stick plays, Houma and others. Decent defenses get the same Smith but he battles to turn a one yard gain into 2-3. Against terrible defenses like last week he battles to turn a 3 yard gain into 9. Either way the OL still isn't getting consistent push or picking up the right guys (or anyone) when pulling. Rudock will have to win this game, IMO. Defense should keep us in it IF we're getting solid QB play.

I think that says something about BYU. They looked like they were in control, but their defense wasn't good enough to finish off UCLA. Now it's down to the offense to pull it out again.

Officials really need to start enforcing illegal man downfield.  Ole Miss had OL blocking 7-8 yards past the LOS all game long.

I'm sick of teams getting away with shit b/c of their offense. For years you'd see Oregon running illegal pre-snap motions with no call. They'd look like a frigging Arena/CFL team. Plus, offenses like that never see holding penalties b/c it goes so fast that the refs can't keep up. I'm tired of how 1st & 10 turned into 1st & 9.5...ehh, close enough, first down! If you're just close they give it to you. You'll see the ref closest to the play have the ball a full yard short and the far side ref will be a full yard beyond so when they meet up to spot the play side ref will just mark the difference - first down. Finally, it's now a rule that opponents forget HOW to hold against Michigan! They just forget, they never do it except that they kinda always do it. You'll see Wormley or Taco's upper body get yanked back away from their direction of movement and the refs don't see it, believe basic physics change in Ann Arbor OR obey the new rule/phenomena. Teams never hold because they don't know how! Amazing.

Well... if they gave UCLA a game like that then... BYU certainly won't be a pushover for us that's fore sure.
