Game Against Utah Referred To As Cupcake Game......by Popular Mechanics

Utah receiver Kenneth Scott says he's heard U-M refer to opener as a 'cupcake' game. Uh, what?
So of course they take the MSU route and feel slighted and need all the extra motivation they can get. Forgetting the fact that they came into Ann Arbor last year and dominated Michigan.

Oh come on, THIS is where it's coming from? Popular Mechanics? fox13now.com/2015/08/24/utes-respond-to-cupcake-remark-in-popular-mechanics-calendar/ …
The Utes have some extra motivation, but it didn’t come from the Wolverines. In the latest edition of Popular Mechanics, the magazine’s monthly calendar put this on the calendar on September third. “College football season gets underway tonight with the University of Michigan in a cupcake game against Utah.”
The Utes already have the quote up on their bulletin board.
“Our team is always juiced no matter what,” said Utah senior wide receiver Kenneth Scott. “So, with that little thing that they put in our locker room about us being a cupcake game it definitely puts more intensity into the game, just because of that little statement that was made. And plus we’re always trying to prove everybody wrong, because everyone sees us as the underdog, so we always have the chip on our shoulder.”

hmm when I read the title, I figured we were the cupcake

I thought wow look at how far we've fallen. We're considered the cupcake now instead of the other way around.

Harbaugh has it on our bulletin board as motivation

Me too. I suspect most of the readers of this blog thought the same thing.

MICHIGAN only lost like 4 games by like 11 points in 2013. We AIN'T NO CUPCAKE!

Only sprinkles are for winners.

Utah is ranked #56 in engineering.
Michigan is ranked #6.
Not even close. We'll have the freshman robotics team in by the 3rd quarter.

Every coach will post anything and everything in the locker room that they can to motivate players. Pretty funny.

Not really. Dantonioesque would be if Utah continued to obsess over Michigan during the other 51 weeks of the year and go out of its way to point out that it won its last two games against us, even in contexts in which it's not relevant. Win or lose, I doubt Whittingham will give Michigan much thought after this game is over.

I really want to know what sort of bulletin board material is posted on the bulkheads of the submarine. I never seem to hear anything about us getting any extra motivation from pre-game shenanigans like other teams do (at least not since OSU games back in the 90's).

you had Stanton running his mouth the week leading up to the game.

Even with bulletin board material, can they match enthusiasm unknown to mankind?

What are they gonna do if they win? Write letters to the editor?

Really? I'm not a Popular Mechanics reader but it's been around for well over a century and short of the Time/People/Life/Newsweek general interest magzines, probably has as much name recognition value as any other magazine in the country over the last few decades.

I can't believe you've never read the most trusted source for college football info...Are you sure you're a real CFB fan?
BTW, Popular Mechanics editor now has your post on his/her bulletin board.

How stupid. Popular Mechanics?? LOL ...
And really. How much external motivation does it take? It's like message board posters who warn one another not to "overlook" the next game.
As if anything posted on a message board is correlated to team prep.
Popular Mechanics .....what?

Just about everything I've read on this game indicates the contrary. Everybody from analysts to odds makers to our own fanbase believes that's this game is Utah's but that we could pull of the upset. I think it's going to be a close hard fought game that could go either way. Sadly I have the Utes picked in my pool :(
I can only assume that some coaches don't think their players read or hear what's out there and believe that all they hear about a game is what's up on the bulletin boards.
August 25th, 2015 at 10:31 AM ^
You sure you want to be admitting that publically Mr. Scott?
August 25th, 2015 at 10:31 AM ^
I love that Utah is using a quote from Popular Mechanics as a motivational tool. Whatever works I guess!
August 25th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
Yeah. Kinda proves the point that you actually are a cupcake.

August 25th, 2015 at 1:30 PM ^
I upvoted you twice because of the subtle Utah Jazz tie-in. I still don't get why they didn't change that name when they relocated there. Utah is the state you least associate jazz with.

If that's all they can come up with for extra motivation I think that's really their problem. I have respect for this team, they beat us last year... and now it's time for pay back.
I've also heard from a few folks that Rice-Eccles is no joke to play in, and that Utes fans aren't necessarily very welcoming either. Expect a rowdy and rocking stadium. I do hope this "submarine" mentality really holds and is effective in getting this team laser focused.
I'm getting pumped thinking about game day!
August 25th, 2015 at 10:34 AM ^
So does this mean that the football team is going to war against their college of engineering?
August 25th, 2015 at 10:34 AM ^
No, that's a Sparty tactic.
August 25th, 2015 at 10:34 AM ^
And it's actively read by Utes? Who has the primary subscription, the coaching staff or team?
Seriously, though, this is going to be a tough matchup. And Harbaugh has come a long way in the competitve world, most recently the No Fun League where every opponent is capable of beating their opposite number on any given gameday. And he's had his team deep-sixed since camp started with nothing but BTN Fluffernutter interviews meantime, conference media requirement.
So, the Utes are getting inspiration from a message in a commercial calendar in Popular Mechanics? Really. If this is what it takes to fire up the chip-on-the-shoulder engine so be it. Michigan will be ready. That I am sure. And we don't need no stinkin off-the-shelf kick-in-the-ass to claim we're fired up. It's football season, man. We've been waiting for this longer than Harbaugh's arrival. We's ready for some Utes!
