Friday Night Drinking and What Was the Worst Job You Ever Had Thread

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Way busy this week, way busy.  Glad to be home now and about to start on an adult beverage or two. It occured to me also that summer time is the time when most people start to get their first 'real' job and that as you look back, some of those jobs you've had were dandies.

So I ask you, what was the worst job you ever had, and what are you drinking tonight to get over it?   And while you're at it, share fun stuff about your weekend plans.

Cheers.

It's between the paper route I had in elementary and a call center job during college. The paper route required waking up at about 3 in the morning and delivering papers before school. Part of that route included a senior citizen high rise building in Pontiac, MI that had a few floors that smelled like dead corpses and roaches that scattered upon the newspaper landing. The other job was an incoming call center for infomercials that sold ladders, makeup, work out equipment etc. I worked midnight to 8am and was paid an extra $1 per hour BALLIN'. Between the prank calls, the hours and asshole customers (including being called the word of N) it was terrible.

I worked at a bank call center for a summer during undergrad. It was awful. The bank in question was expanding from Indiana into Michigan, so they needed extra full-time call center agents. Everyone who calls a bank is pissed off because they've done something stupid with their account (mostly overdraw for the umpteenth time), and the new customers were pissed off because their accounts were being transferred to a new bank. Some people work that job forty hours a week for their entire adult life, and I commend them as much as anyone.

Bottle of Chianti with Primo's Pizza (Bham, MI)

I literally shoveled sh*t one summer. Deck hand on a charter yacht that did a bunch of weddings and some other cool stuff. At the end of the night, we hooked up a hose to the side and sucked out all of the sewage into a trailered storage pot called a honey dipper. We would empty the honey dipper into a sewer, and I basically shot the sh*t a couple feet from my hands.

Did get to bartend for Tayshaun Prince's wedding on the yacht though, so it was a fair trade. Met McDyess, Dumars, Big Ben, Chauncey.

Worked as a grade school basketball referee while I was in high school. Parents/coaches were assholes, I don't know how many times I had to kick a coach out for calling me a fucker in front of a bunch of 5th grade girls.

Just got home from driving 12 hours with a break halfway.

Stopped and bought a bottle of 12-year Glenlivet which I am sipping as I type this.

Man it is so good to be home!

Drinking Beam with a splash of coke after touring another college with my GF and her kids.  U Toledo today, did UM Wednesday.                                                                                                      Worst/first job was corn detasselling.  Worked for Pioneer seed corn, corn was planted in rows of 6 female and then 2 male.  Insert own joke here.  Job was to pull every tassel off every female plant so they didn't cross pollinate.  About a 3 week season, 10-12 hours a day, except during thunderstorms.  Minimum wage of about 3$/hour in late 70's.  This was in Schoolcraft area, some fields took 30 min to walk one way.  Did have one kid who was convinced smoking corn tassels would give you a buzz.  Didn't work, did get him fired.

picking tomatoes. I love eating them, but that was nasty hard back-breaking work especially during hot summer weather. I did that, along with the hated detassling for only a couple summers (though I did help on farms for many years of my late childhood thru high school.). Most of the work I did on farms (several relatives were farmers, so you name it and I probably had a go at it!) was actually not bad, if not down-right enjoyable. Besides, hard work builds character and muscles!

I was hired at Borders as a temp worker right before Christmas 2010. I had just received my Masters from UofM (which has since served me well). Darn that recession.

After the insanity of enduring the holiday shopping season Borders closed like half of their stores (mine included).

I was fired.

Then I was re-hired by a liquidation company and I proceeded to sell off all the remaindered books in the store to amazon vendors.

Then I sold the fixtures in the store to local retailers.

Then I was fired again.

Man, I gotta start drinking soon. I'm headed to Napa for dinner tonight so some type of wine is on the menu.

One time I had to work as a fluffer for male only adult films. It was something I had forgotten about through deep suppression and a therapist. Now all I can see is me warming up a white rain of a thousand loads. Fuck you.

Updating software for the 2000 switch. I had eight different bosses, was regularly asked to work Saturday and even Sunday. The printer/fax sucked and was a source of constant drama.

After the two decent coworkers I had were fired I stayed on with a plan to rip the place off. Thankfully a fire bailed me out when that started going poorly.

I manually dug trenches for drainage and sprinkler systems when I was 16. They called me the "Mexican Backhoe." I'm not even Mexican.... That prepared me for my time in the USMC and is why I'm drinking Malbec and Dos Equis Ambar.

A pic of me working that job: "Take it off here, Boss?" No Luke!

Jim Beam.

Used to sling 'zas at Pizza Hut in high school. Did everything except deliver; took orders, cashiered, prepped, cleaned, made za, etc. The night before Thanksgiving (the holy day in the pizza world) we were getting slammed. I was taking an order and was having difficulty applying a coupon for a particular promo. Asked the shift manager, who was also busy, for help. She applies said coupon and screams, "It's not that hard you idiot." I looked at her, hung up on the customer, and walked out. Haven't been back since. Store owner asked me to come back. Declined. Shift manager was fired. Honestly was the straw that broke the camels back. Also, don't mess with people who handle your food, this includes drivers. You ever see that movie 'Waiting'? All sorts of that stuff goes on.

Oh yeah! Got my final paycheck from the hut that i never picked up some 8 years later.

Sailor Jerry and coke.

Also enjoying a 60 gauge cigar on my deck watching the Tigers.

Worst job was working at a convenience store in a small shitty town during college. Nothing worse that dealing with dipshits until 11pm.

Drinking ice water and still finishing up work at the office.

Going to see Nick Thune with my wife and some friends in Bellevue, WA, tonight:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ-XlkJOgTQ

He's a local comedian and funny as hell.  Can't wait.

Worst job:  14 years old.  Free Press morning paper route.  60 doors.  Start about 4:45am.  Weekends in the winter were the worst.  Had to assemble the papers with the inserts which resulted in newspapers the size of half a phone book.  And, of course, in the snow in Michigan there is no way to ride a bike, so I would load 20 papers at a time onto a red plastic sled, arrange a harness jerry rigged with a rope around my shoulders, and walk through the snow delivering papers for 90-120 minutes.  Had  to return home at least twice mid-route to re-load and thaw my feet and hands.

All of that joy for about $25/week.  But at that time, $25 to a 14 year old in the 80's might was well have been $1M.  Simple math.  Topps baseball cards were $0.35 / pack.  I could afford 70 wax packs a week.  I hated that job, but I loved baseball cards more.  Still have them.  And I believe they are worth the exact same amount today as they were 30 years ago.

I had a job doing software support(Auto Dealership related).  Isn't wasn't a bad job until I got a new Boss.

He was very short, very bald, no education,  way, way more Catholic than the Pope.

I found a new job making mo money.  He got fired for employee abuse a year after I left.  He who laughs last, laughs best MF'er.  I doubt the guy has had a decent job since he got fired.       .

Drinking a Summer Shandy, my favorite summer beer.

Worst job I've had is roofing. Nothing even comes close to it really. 2-3 stories up, tearing off a roof, then carrying bundles up a ladder in 90+ degree weather. Never again.

Drinking cheap red wine.

Worst job was one summer as a dishwasher at a coney island in Flint. Slaved over dishes and put through big dishwashing machine, bussed tables, did battle with bees in the dumpster, etc., for a whopping $3.35/hour.

Worked in a call center for Boost Mobile a semester during college. It was brutal. Had classes all day Mon-Wed and worked 4 10 hour shifts Thurs-Sun with 1 30 min break. It was nonstop calls of getting cussed at because their "phone wasn't working", but 99% of the time it was because Boost was a prepay service and they had no money in the account ....and then they'd try to get you to put free money in their account smh

Fuck that job.

I'll have a drink now

I am drinking more to get over the long week tonight - in this particular instance, it's a bottle of Marques de Caceres. Well, maybe two bottles. It has been that sort of week.

Worst job? Landscaping one summer while I was at Michigan. I don't mind the exercise and labor, but when it is a summer of long stretches at 90 degrees in the afternoon or better, digging holes so other people can have nice treed backyards sucks. Staying hydrated when a crew of 5-6 are sharing the same shitty Igloo water cooler presents interesting problems too.
