Good news for M re: #1 kicker Quinn Nordin
Rockford kicker Quinn Nordin, who is ranked #1 in the nation by Kornblue Kicking and is a 5 star kicking prospect, will be taking only one more visit before he makes his decision.
That visit will be to Michigan.
The good news is that MSU just took a kicker today so that only shoots Michigan's odds at getting him up the charts.
His finalists are Michigan, Penn State, MSU, Georgia and Arizona State.
Nordin is also the #19 ranked punter.

the game. It's tough on a defense when you know you're giving up points whether or not your opponent ever makes it into the red zone.
better yet as an "ass hazard."
uncontainable excitement with an enthusiasm that reaches a level unknown to mankind? That is, after all, the new standard here.

PSU also just took a punter I believe
All your kickers belong to us!
reply directly from Rockford; "Please do take our kicker, he is the best prospect in the country, GOBLUE!"
I still have no idea why such an important position gets so little respect from a scholarship perspective. Seems like you should always have at least 2 P/Ks on scholarship at all times.
Or at FSU, 3-4.
I'm not sure what you mean. Michigan usually does have at least two. We had three recently (Wile, Hagerup, Gibbons).
Would they use a scholarship on a kicker in back to back classes?
In case one of them sucks or decides not to play football.
Thats just a guess though, and to be honest I'm not excited about taking another kicker when we've already got the 2016 class filling up while holes at specific positions remain. But, you know... maybe Quinn can play WR too!
Blake O'Neill is only going to be here one year. Need a punter for 2016.
Need to be deep at every position. And having depth that consists of top rated players at their positions is a good thing.
Agree it is strange but strange on both fronts. Both for a college to get kickers in back to back classes but for the 2nd kicker to agree to show up at a school without at least a year staggered in between him and the other kicker.
Obviously punters v placekickers are different but this is 2 PKs in a row if he commits. Maybe he feels he can be a P if he loses the PK battle so that position will be open in 2016.
Competition does not scare some people.
In the US there are 32 jobs for professional place kickers. 32 jobs for punters. Specialists would be well served to make sure that - even more so than other athletes - they are ready to "go pro in something other than sports"

He is a K out of Cincy, OH. I am sure he can punt though, but he is primarily a K. He comitted yesterday btw WD...come on man!
They picked up Matt Coghlin who is the #3 ranked kicker nationally.
Kornblue has him rated high, but 247 doesn't even have a rating for him. 247 and others should just use Kornblue's ratings for specialists.

If we want another Canadian, we should look at Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. The press conferences alone would be epic!
Yes, but he wont pass any of the drug tests.
He could hire Garrick Sherman to pee in a condom for him.
Never trust them
Obviously the grapevine is not always very accurate. Having a dedicated ST coach would also be a big plus in helping the kid with any issues he may have.
Personally I would take him in a heartbeat. Competition and talent is huge no matter what position.

I saw Ace Ventura. I haven't trusted kickers since then.

This kid is very highly rated, but the OP should not get carried away. No kicker gets 4 stars, let alone 5.
He is a 3-star prospect, which is fantastic for a kicker. I hope we can get him.

Kickers have a separate ranking system. I think there are gurus that rate them because it is such a unique position. Kickers, like goalies, are weird as shit so they should be kept away from the normal people.
My point is simple: when rankings get compiled and our class gets ranked (which a huge portion of MGoblog cares about, understandably), he'll go down as a 3-star. Which, again, is great for a kicker.
I think an argument can be made that 24/7, Rivals, etc underrate the importance of kickers (hence why 3-stars is the max, as they're seen as fairly interchangeable), but that's not what they do now.
Kornblue kicking does their own rankings, similar to Scout and RIvals. He is tied for #1 and rated a 5 star to them. According to them, a 5 star is considered to be able to start as a freshman. He is the composite #1 kicker and a 3 star on 247.
Nordin was 3/7 on field goals last year with makes from 39, 33, and 29 yards. He was 16/17 on extra points. He averaged 39.2 yards/punt.
Especially for the "#1 Kicking prospect in the country." He must be lights out in the camp setting. Or maybe he just has a terrible holder.
The coach may have let him kick in difficult situations (long FG, windy, crazy rain...) because he's so good, so why not.
That doesn't make sense if these stats are correct... if his coach was using him all willy-nilly I would expect to see more than 7 attempts.

I played against John Hall in HS and he wasn't very good. He missed multiple fieldgoals against us our senior season. I was shocked when Wisconsin took him and then he spent 10 seasons in the NFL between the Jets and Redskins. He had leg strength, he put the ball through the uprights on a kickoff, which cannot be coached and they apparently fixed the accuracy/confidence issues.
I really have no opinion of him. Kicking is not my specialty. I'm just sharing statistics.

Off the top of my head, one was from 46 yards and the other three misses were from 30-39 yards.
