OT - Money v. Manny
Am I really going to spend $100 on this thing? It is a ludicrous expense, one that I cannot reasonably justify to any extent. And I don't have a boxing "clan" that I am going to hook up with to watch this thing and split the cost, this will be me with pizza on the couch, wife and son in bed, at midnight, watching this fight.
But I keep wondering whether it is actually going to be that good, and if it is, can I justify not getting it? I know, neither is in their prime, but neither is that far out of it either. And there are certain things that I cannot even picture in my head, and one of those is Mayweather getting beat, like losing in a standing TKO, unable to continue. I can't even picture what it would look like and while I don't think such an outcome is likely, Pacqiuo does have the capacity to do it, which is more than really anybody else close to Mayweather's weight class can say.
I got Tyson-Lewis, and while Lennox just opened up a can that night from nearly the opening bell, I cannot say that I regretted getting it. It was every bit the "event" that I was promised.
Fear of what I could miss (and what will be one hell of a boxing atmosphere inside that building) is the driving factor here - I kind of feel like I have to get this fight.
Is anybody else weighing this decision?

and end in decision. Neither fighter will throw shit for punches. Waste of $$$$ and very boring
April 28th, 2015 at 12:46 PM ^
will throw. Mayweather is a really good counter-puncher but not really for power. Pacquio really does not have a whole lot to lose here and has a steady jaw(although it really hasn't been tested since the punch from hell against Marquez). I don't think Manny is going to just walk through this thing.

Hopkins when they both were in their prime, Jones was too greedy
They fought in their 20's around 1994 with Jones winning.

The test will be how Manny has recovered mentally after that knock out. I heard it takes boxers several fights to mentally get over getting KOed like that.
um, Manny has fought 3 times since that...That has already been answered by his 3 dominate performances..
I don't really know boxing, but my friend who loves it told me he think Manny hasn't been really tested since the Marquez fight. That is why he mentioned that he doesn't know how he will respond mentally since he hasn't been tested.
Ya whats up?

Don't bars show boxing matches?
April 28th, 2015 at 12:28 PM ^
very uncommon.

Somebody told me that the Buffalo Wild Wings in Grand Rapids has a $10 cover or something for the fight. I remember a couple years ago there was a pretty big fight (don't even remember who it was) and there was a pretty large crowd watching the fight through the same BWW's windows.

See ijohnb's response below, but to add to that, PPV events are usually a per head charge, so it will be very expensive for any establishment to offer the fight without having some sort of cover charge for it. Otherwise, it will be hard to cover that cost.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:28 PM ^
I don't ever watch boxing, and I'm gonna find some bar to watch it in. It might be the last big fight for boxing.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:31 PM ^
is likely going to be harder than you think. They don't just pay the $99.00 to have it and let everybody watch. They have to pay an establishment price and it is not cheap at all, and it usually does not make any difference in terms of their bottom line, people would be there drinking anyway, particularly with so many other sporting event that day. Not many bars will carry the fight.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:35 PM ^
Any Bdubs will have it (Some may have a $5 cover. This was my experience trying to watch UFC out west). The Score in Grand Rapids usually shows Mayweather fights, too.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:40 PM ^
BWs has it than problem solved. I knew they got some MMA events but did not think they did boxing.
Edit: I searched the BW3 website for any mention of this. They are advertising that they carry MMA but no mention of the Rumble in the...... Desert?
April 28th, 2015 at 12:41 PM ^
Sounds like my plan. I have no problem kicking in $5-$10 to watch. More than that, I'll go home and stream.

Click on that link and you can pick a state and it gives you bdubs that are playing it. Only the Grand Rapids and East Lansing locations are playing it in Michigan.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:47 PM ^
there is one place that I can promise you won't find me it is at a Bdubs in East Lansing.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:56 PM ^
But I just did a quick scroll through all of the states and there are only 30 bdubs across the country playing the fight. So odds are bdubs won't be a good option. All I did was google search bars playing the fight in my city and I found a couple local places playing it and that was it. Doesn't look like many bars are willing to pay the price to carry the fight.
at a bar/restaurant years ago and they had a fight. I think it was Holyfield-Tyson 1. It was a debacle, they lost money, people were so wasted they were falling over. Management was not happy with their decision.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:36 PM ^
It's amazing how far out of its way boxing goes to ensure that no one watches its sport.

The last two famous boxers are in this fight. I guess I can say I've heard of Broner as well. In comparison I can name probably three or four times more UFC/MMA fighters. And I watch neither one regularly.
Yes, these guys are making bank, but there are no fighters worth watching after the next couple years when they retire. It seems really dumb for this era to charge the pay per views this way.

If this was the final match of an epic trilogy, I'd be all in. Doesn't move the needle much for me right now but if friends are ordering it, I might chip in.

April 28th, 2015 at 12:34 PM ^
what my fear is. I ordered Mayweather-Cotto(granted for like $50.00 less) and Cotto was game, but he could not catch him. Cotto basically said screw this in like the 7th and stopped trying to catch him because he wasn't going to. Now Cotto isn't Pac, but I would hate to drop this money and have it be a repeat.
Pacquiao fights are usually entertaining to watch and Mayweather fights are usually pretty boring unless you super technical boxing and 10 punches thrown a round.
I think its going to be a foot race around the ring. Mayweather can barely knock anyone out and Pacquiao could hurt Mayweather, so Mayweather will be loathe to engage him even more so than usual. Pacquiao might be diminished enough that he won't be able to get to Mayweather or won't hurt him enough without landing a solid punch. Might be one of those frustrating fights.
$100 + after midnight + 2 young kids + 6 years too late means I'm unlikely to buy it but even i'll admit that there is a slight chance that at 11 pm I'll cave and order it.
you cave, do it around 7 or 8 PM. If your going to spend the 100 bucks you might as well catch the undercard.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:35 PM ^
I'm using an illegal stream and have no problems with it. You can't charge $100 for a Pay Per View event and expect this generation to actually buy it.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:38 PM ^
That's what I'm going to do. There's a couple of bars downtown where I live that are showing the fight. $20 cover charge. I thought that seemed steep, but it beats paying $100. This might be the last big fight you get to watch in boxing for a long time.
But if you have to stay home, I wouldn't spend $100. I would just stream it. The quality won't be great, but that wouldn't be a big deal knowing I saved $100 to see the same thing just in a lower quality video.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:36 PM ^
I'd like to watch the fight but I think I'm going to pass. I understand all the hype surrounding the match but I don't think I'll pay $100 to see a 12th round decision.

I don't follow boxing, but here's my 2 cents.
$100 isn't cheap, but assuming that it does not actually bust your budget, I'd go ahead and buy it, or at least find someplace to see it. It sounds like you have a strong desire to see the bout. It's a one-time expense. Are you going to be happier saving the $100 than you would be from getting to see the fight?

is all I needed to hear jmblue. One person to be like, just do it man, and I was going to be sold. Thanks for the encouragement. Now if this fight stinks it is on you......

a thirty-something with a 7 year old and another on the way. My friends live in different states throughout the country. I don't have a rolodex of people to watch the Mayweather fight with just cuz.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:47 PM ^
I'm going to a friends house to watch it. There will be tons of food there because they are Filipinos. Hopefully someone will bring the whole suckling pig like they did for the last Manny fight.

$100 to see any fight. Maybe this one, if it was five years ago like it should have been.
I hope Manny just knocks the crap out of Floyd. Guy built his entire career fighting people either before, or well past, their prime.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:55 PM ^
To add to that the thing I can't stand the most is that Floyd is a wife beater. I hope he gets his ass knocked out.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:57 PM ^
I don't think you will find many Mayweather supporters out there. Go Manny!
