OT-OSU shady SEC like oversigning

Submitted by UMFanstuckinOhio on
So here in central Ohio two issues have been a hot topic on Columbus sports talk radio both Friday and today. -Jamel Dean CB being medicaly disqualifed. Here is a link describing how his coach is not happy. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/04/08/hs-coach-sounds-off… -Also, it looks like another recruit from the 2015 class, Liam McCullough is going to be greyshirted. Yes I know he is a long snapper. However, it still looks tacky to me. http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2015/04/ohio_state_football_scho… Edit: I was trying to point out that the major sports talk show in Columbus was kind of calling Meyer out on these two issues the last few days. I found that interesting.

get discussed last week, but not the part about local radio getting on Urb... so I do find that intersting. Also, while people argue various points regarding if its ok or not, I just think about how many scholarships football teams have compared to basketball, yet look how JB is handling Austin Hatch's situation in honoring his athletic scholarship. I'm sure there's a difference I'm missing, but 1 out of 85 scholarships vs 1 out of 15 (?? how many do they get? ); beilein is such a class act.

Yes, they're gaining a massive competitive advantage against the rest of the Big Ten that really can't be swept under the rug. They've signed 20 to 30 more players than us in the past 4-5 classes, giving them fresh talent to plug in when other recruits inevitably don't pan out. When our recruits don't pan out, they still start for us.

Weird. Someone must have changed my bookmark. I clicked "MGoBlog," but instead it took me here to 11W because all I see is OSU posts.

Which is why I never start posts any more ( that and I don't have any news on the west coast that  somebody out there didn't already hear about )

Meanwhile at ohio, Meyer has been punished for oversigning, lame excuses for kicking kids off the team, and letting his QBs shill things on Instagram with a contract extension through 2020.

Columbus: South till you smell it, east till you get sucked into its accountability vacuum.

Don't we need some DBs?  Wouldn't it be great just for trolling purposes alone?  Even if the kid turns us down, the contrast might make an impression on some people.

Doesn't surprise me about the greyshirt - it's crappy, but also when you're a long-snapper on scholarship you have to expect this might happen if there is a crunch.

Meyer is an asshole who hides behind some bible verses, top-notch ESPN productions, and (for a time) having Tim Tebow on his team.  He's a fine coach, but this won't be the last time he screws over a kid.

the strategy appears to be give athletic scholarships to only the most talented football players at positions of need for their team.

this seems to be leading to very good football teams.

If you don't perform you're gone. He is helping prepare them to be strong, and win at things. Would you want Hoke teaching your child life lessons where you expect everything easy, or Meyer. If you're really objective and care about success it is an easy choice. Thank God Jim is relentless like Meyer and is pushing out the men that aren't trying.

Go away.

The only lesson Meyer is teaching people is that grown men will lie to teenagers when it serves their best interests.  If you think yanking a scholarship from a kid because the head coach couldn't do math properly beforehand is being a leader and teaching core values, then we are in two completely different worlds.

We can all puff out our chests and call Meyer a sleezeball, how we at Michigan would never allow our coaches to do something like this, but I can't say with any sort of confidence that most of us wouldn't just brush it off if Meyer was our coach.

Sure, he's getting questioned for it, as he rightfully should, but do you think anyone in Columbus would ever seriously consider the notion of life without him now? Absolutely not. Why? Because he wins, and he wins big. Winning has a way of shutting everyone up, and getting everyone to fall in line. My guess is that if Meyer were here and doing the same things, most people would ignore it completely, or say he should get a slap on the wrist, and then move on.

Would be allowed to do it. Hell, until Harbaugh, we didn't allow 5th year transfers (eg Jason Forcier, who graduated from Stanford).

IMO, over signing is fine. Everybody knows about St. Saban's Medical Institution and the fact that Meyer over signs. It's common knowledge.

OSU recruits be warned.

Reason MEYER is a total dueche. Dude is ruining kids lives and taking football from them when he no longer sees them as a viable starter. He finds a way to chip 1-2 a year of the team to over sign. I really hate what the guy stands for. You don't see any NON 3rd or 4th stringers coming to his defense at all and saying he's like a dad to them. Fucking dueche only pays attention to his star players! It's really sad

so I didnt continue the discussion, sorry about that lol, here is the response FWIW.  Brady Hoke held to idea of keeping his word and giving kids a fair shot to play and if he were still coach you would see Shane Morris getting the start outright without a transfer coming in that likely will bump him to the backup.  Thats because Morris was promised he would get to play if he came to M, and thats even though he may not give Michigan the best chance to win.  Your statement comes from the thinking that we have to be fair and give every kid playing time or we promised a kid would get a scholarship so we have to give it to him even though other circumstances have come to light.  Now thats the fair thing to do but come on, this is big boy football, the adult world.  When you get a job or start a business its going to be results oriented.  If you don't perform at work you get demoted or fired or passed over for a promotion (well unless you work for the government lol, but thats another discussion).  I am saying that this is the same thing.  If a kid is recruited by Meyer and he looks good but then comes in and has an unstable knee joint that you know is going to affect the kids performance then guess what he gets the medical rejection.  Brady Hoke did things the right way in accordance with your thinking when dealing with the players but he didnt win. This isnt little league anymore where every kid gets to play and we don't care what the score is.  So thats the dilemma do things the right way OR get your hands dirty do what you have to do to field a competitive team within reason and build a winning program.  We have seen what the former is like over the past 4 years, I am for the latter.

Oh wow! Ohio Pee Ewwww is breaking rules and doing things that are shady????

Big surprise here.

It's a matter of time before Urban Oscar Meyer is confronted for his coaching ethics.

Bank on it.
