Spartyfreude - Basketball Rivalries

I know we've talked about the rank of football rivalries in the past, but I don't think we have ranked basketball rivalries yet.

I bring this up because, going into the Wisconsin-Sparty game, I was definitely rooting for Sparty to lose. I know that we dislike Wisconsin, but I hate Izzo SO MUCH more. This got me to thinking where other MGoBloggers would rank their hate for some of our rivals.

Here is my list:

1) Sparty

2) Indiana

2a) OSU (because Ohio)

4) Wisconsin

5-12) Doesn't really matter

Obviously Rutgers and Maryland are near the bottom, but other than that, I don't have any strong feelings about the other teams.

I don't get all the Kentucky hate...we barely play them. I don't particularly care for coach Cal but I must say after being in the building for the elite 8 last year they have one of the most passionate and pleasant fan bases in the country. They were very nice and complementary before during and after the game. BBN is ok with me

I agree with you about the fan base that attends the NCAA games.  I haven't experienced it, but my Dad would attend the South Regional every year when Pitino was the coach. Kentucky and/or Duke were always in the Regional.  He always complemented their fan bases on their passion and how courteous they were to other fans.

Kentucky on-line fans on the other hand are normally obnoxious!

In short, whichever team is at the top of the standings is the #1 rival, and that is much more volatile situation  in Bball than in football.

1. MSU, hate with a passion
2. IU, for me goes back to the battles of the 90s
3. OSU, self explanatory
4. Kentucky, I live in Cincinnati. In this area you learn quickly to hate them
5. Wisconsin, just because I hate all things Wisconsin, except brats and cheese.

Hate list, basketball edition:
1. OSU, because OSU
2. MSU, because MSU
3. Duke, mostly for the 90s rivalry
4. Christian Laetner, deserving of an entire entry
5. Bill Walton, for ripping on the Fab Five and being the whiniest hippie of them all
6. The late-1980s Boston Celtics

You may ask why Notre Dame tops my list. I would answer that they top my list in every sport. I hate the Notre Dame women's cross country team with a passion.
