OT - Best Burger In Each State
Came across this list on Yahoo today. No big surprise as Blimpy Burger was the vote for Michigan. As a Chicago resident, I was happy to see Au Cheval make the list for Illinois as that burger is to die for. And lastly, the best burger I ever had made the cut, at Parlour in Minneapolis. So board, did the list do your state justice?
And now I'll be going there for dinner tonight.
Bartley's makes the best burgers in Massachusetts.
AWWWWWWWWWWW SHEEEEEE VALLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stellas, in Grand Rapids, makes the best burger in Michigan.

I love burgers, but hate this list. It's hard enought to agree on the best burger in any large city. Best in the state is just insanity!
Don't know how you could pick just one, obviously not everyone is gonna agree. Most cities have a top 10 or something, and even those are very debatable. States seem too large.
I agree. I live in the Twin Cities and the designation of "Best Burger" is as prestigous as it is fleeting. I have been to a lot of the "Best Burger" places here and they are all pretty damn good.
Stella's in downtown Grand Rapids is the best burger I've had at Michigan.
I'm an Ann Arbor transplant from GR and have never been! Isn't it right next to the arena?
It's close yeah. Kind of behind McFaddens.
You can enter the back entrance from Ionia Ave.
It's basically a punk rock bar that has good selection of whiskeys or any liquor for that matter. They also serve beer.
I would recommend Stella's Blue (basically bleu cheese with bacon) and chronic fries. They are delish!
Nice, I'll have to check it out after a Griffins game. Sounds like a fun bar. Do they have bands playing their regularly?
but unique bar with arcades and graffitis inside. Very unique.

....but not the best in Chicago/Illinois. For the purests our there, it's a fantastic burger. However, try Edzo's or Kulas Korner. Way better in my opinion.
I have not made it to Edzo's, I will give you that one. Kuma's is very good...but I prefer Au Cheval over Kuma's.
I love Edzo's. I formed a "burger consortium" on Facebook comprised mostly of my friends, but also some strangers, and Eddie Larkin (Edzo) joined the group. I tried to go to Au Cheval but a three hour wait? No thanks. Maybe I'l try lunch sometime. And I do love Kuma's but the burgers are just so damn big. Definitely more of a destination burger.
Isn't Edzo's closed? I do like Kumas Korner. I think Au cheval is the best simple burger. Kumas has the best options and toppings etc. A lot of people like DMK, but I find it to be very average. I like Rock's in Lakeview. Burger and the Butcher is good. I like the Burger Bar on Clybourn. I've hear the Lockdown is good but haven't been yet. Bad Apple is pretty solid. Hard to say which is the best since they all have differences, strengths, weaknesses. I don't think Au Cheval is by far the best especially if you factor in the wait time and the lack of options, but it is a damn good burger and in the top 3 or 4 no doubt.
If you want a simplistic burger, you can't beat Au Cheval. I live very close to Lockdown, and it's a very solid burger. Very similar to Kuma's in nearly every way, although not quite as extreme with some of the toppings. Go in the summer when you can sit outside.
Au Cheval is being lauded for their burger with an egg on it. Pretty sure that is the Kuma Burger.
And now that the second location is open, the hipsters and suburanites don't go to the original as much. Of course, you still get that asshole who needs to hold the door open because he can't fit inside, despite it being 0 outside.
Their bacon is something else
Edzo's is still open in Evanston, closed on Lincoln. For a really great burger in Chicago, try Top Notch Beefburgers in Beverly. It's a little out of the way but their burgers are great. Very old school. They have really good paty melts, too.
Bad Apple is better too.
Au Cheval isn't bad, but it isn't near the best in Chicago.
I don't find Kuma's to be that great, unless they've improved the actual burger patty itself. That's part of what makes Au Cheval better in the opinion of many, the actual burger meat tastes better there.
My favorite is Owen & Engine. House made bun, house-ground meat blend that includes short rib, seasoning, and grilled onions. You could add cheese, egg or bacon, but it doesn't need it, which tells you all you need to know about the quality of the burger itself.
Claims the best burger she has had in Chicago is at Owen & Engine too. Haven't been there to try it, but might have to go soon!
Just don't sit at the bar at Owen & Engine. Everytime I have to listen to a bartender bitch about Longman & Eagle having a Michelin star. Which is funny, considering O&E is a blatant rip off of Longman.
You might be the first person I've ever come across who doesn't like the burger patty at Kuma.
O&E took a lot of their style, menu selections, and drink ideas from Longman. They also planned to open an inn like Longman did.
A couple of really good friends of mine are chefs and were in Chicago around the time both places opened. It was a running joke that if the wait at Longman was too long you could just go to O&E and get 50% of what you were planning on eating at Longman.

If you find yourself in Indianapolis(for future B1G championships of corse) and go to the Working Man's Friend, you better have cash. It is cash only. The burger is pretty magnificent.
New Buffalo, MI has one of my favorites as well. Redamak's. We used to go there everytime we went to the beach.
Have been going there for almost 3 decades. For years, I would put their burger up there with the best in Michigan. They were very quirky about things. Until very recently, they did not have lettuce or tomato on their burgers. In fact, they didn't even have those things AT ALL in the place (i.e. no real salads there) and you were not allowed to bring your own lettuce and tomato. They also didn't serve coffee for years.
I think the burgers are too dry nowadays. Still decent, but really need to bring back some of that old mojo.
I used to love stopping there after weekends at a beach house in St. Joseph. All that grease was a great way to counteract the drinking.
I took my dad to Mt. Chalet in Royal Oak yesterday. The "Build Your Burger" menu offers plenty of options including regular ground beef or The Piedmontese. The battered french fries are great too.
So Au Cheval is named best burger in Illinois on this list, but has never beaten Kuma or Bad Apple in any Chicago-centric poll.
I'm calling bullshit.
Red Coat Tavern piedmontese burger is as good as it gets. The Royal Oak location, not the spin off in Birmingham.
Theyre pricey but so worth it. Piedmontese is also far and away my favorite form of beef.
See my post a couple above. Mt. Chalet serves a piedmontese burger for $9 and the fries are some of the best around.
Not the biggest fan of Mt Chalet. I never enjoyed the food there that much, though its been a number of years. Kind of a tiny hole in the wall place; surprised they even have piedmontese.
I would much prefer that extra half mile up/down Woodward for that Red Coat awesomeness. And those onion rings... oh man those onion rings.
IMO, you have to go with a juicy lucy as the best in Minnesota.
Miller's Bar in Dearborn has pretty darn good burgers.
The Arizona listing mentions "Monkey Burger" in Tucson, which I've never been to (yet). My wife, who loves burgers, tends to be a purist. I tend to agree ... basic toppings and make the meat speak for itself. For me: tomato, pickle, raw onion, mustard and ketchup. Cooked medium. Yummy.
I agree about Millers, but I think their burgers used to be better though back in the day.
Could be ... I've been out of Michigan since 1994. I'm an old fart.
Is the only correct opinion on this matter.
