Aquaman on QB Competition
We'll obviously know more after we get spring practice updates and see how they do in the spring game, but who do you think will win the starting job? Steve Lorenz likes Speight:
http://mgovideo.com/2015-qb-competition/
I'm kind of leaning toward Malzone if it's not Morris. The kid wins at everything he does and has the mobility Harbaugh is looking for. Harbaugh said at the signing day presser that he doesn't seem like a freshman and I don't think he'll play like one either. Gentry is probably too raw to start, but I could see him being used even this year as a short yardage/goal line Tebow-type. Everyone's written off Morris, but I won't be surprised if he looks the most polished in the spring game. I can see him being #2 if he doesn't win the job.

Grbac, Collins, Dreisbach, Griese, Brady, Henson, ect. ALL had plenty of competition.

That made Brady the QB he is today, but the stupid carousel hurt our chances at a potential national title run in 99-00. Start Brady all the way through and we don't lose to MSU and Illinois that year. I truly believe that.

Yes to this. Carr's biggest mistake IMO

Have we ever had a QB wear #19? If not, there is my totally arbitrary reason for wanting Speight to start.

Shocked? Based on what? Seniority? Arm strength? When was the last time he looked like a good football player?
I can see him winning the job, but I have no idea why anyone would be shocked if he doesn't.
February 7th, 2015 at 12:38 AM ^
Last time he looked good was the last time they played in a bowl (more recently than the last time the offense as a whole looked good). My money is on Shane as well. I may not be "shocked" if it isn't him... But I'll be surprised if he doesn't start this season.
February 7th, 2015 at 1:55 AM ^
Maybe you can refresh my memory of exactly when during the BWW bowl that he looked good. He looked like he wasn't trusted to run an offense capable of winning any game. He was limited to two-yard throws, a few of which picked up decent yardage after the catch.

February 7th, 2015 at 8:25 AM ^
Do you remember how many times he threw the ball more than 10 yards in that game?
Also do you remember what he did in 2014?
Morris hasn't done much of anything on the field while at Michigan. He's just a year older than Speight and 2 years older than Malzone and Gentry. That's it.
I'm not saying he won't win the job, but Shane Morris has done absolutely nothing on the field at Michigan. He's never even seen the endzone.
O'Korn has waaaay better experience and results than Morris does.
Again, that's not saying Morris isn't going to win it, but no one should be shocked or surprised. He's a local kid, a fan favorite, a hyped recruit, a sympathetic symbol...but he's done nothing to show he's any more of a D1 QB than Speight, Malzone, or Gentry.

Not saying this is the be-all-end-all of Morris analysis, but as far as concensus goes, this was Brian on a QB controversy about two weeks after the BWW Bowl, 1/13/14.
WHEN IS THE LAST TIME MICHIGAN REPLACED A FIFTH YEAR SENIOR QUARTERBACK WITH AN UNDERCLASSMAN VOLUNTARILY
DON'T LOOK IT UP I'LL TELL YOU NEVER
NEVER EVER
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT SHANE MORRIS'S PERFORMANCE IN THE BOWL GAME THAT CONVINCES YOU HE'S THE GUY, EXACTLY
THAT ONE SCREEN PASS HE THREW THAT WENT A LONG WAY
OR THAT OTHER SCREEN PASS HE THREW THAT WENT A LONG WAY
OR THAT END AROUND THAT TECHNICALLY COUNTS AS A PASS
I MEAN
THE DUDE AVERAGED 5.2 YPA, WHICH IS THREET/SHERIDAN PRODUCTION
HE THREW AN INTERCEPTION THE INSTANT MICHIGAN LET HIM THROW DOWNFIELD
MICHIGAN SCORED SIX MEANINGFUL POINTS
DEVIN GARDNER WAS 80% DEAD MOST OF THIS YEAR AND STILL HAD 8.6 YPA

I'm not trying to tell you that you're right or wrong, just chiming in on whether there was a cosensus about Morris' performance around here or not.
I'm way less bullish than you about what Morris has shown so far, but I think it'd be surprising if he wasn't the starter and I definitely wouldn't write off the possibility that he's going to be good.
February 7th, 2015 at 8:19 AM ^
With JH coaching him, I think Morris becomes an absolute baller.
February 7th, 2015 at 8:32 AM ^
Why was either game difficult conditions?
He had a month to prepare for KSU. And he got a full week as the starter in practice to prepare for a decent/solid Minnesota team. He was babied through the KSU game and did alright. He was completely overmatched and looked as bad as a QB could look in the Minnesota game.
It's not like Devin got hurt on the first series @OSU or @MSU and Morris had to finish the game. That's difficult circumstances.
It's not like someone passed away and he had to rally the team after an emotional week - also difficult circumstances.
Hell, if what Morris had to do was difficult circumstances, what was Cardale Jones? He had a week to prepare for a B1G championship game. Then had 3 to prepare for what most thought was the best defense in the country and 10 days later a national championship game.
I just don't see the comparison.
February 7th, 2015 at 10:51 AM ^
Think back to the week leading up to the Minnesota game. Hoke was under enormous public pressure to do something, anything to try and 'right the ship.'
He chose to use Morris as if to say "Look, I put the kid in and see what happened" when we all know the problems ran much deeper than just the QB situation.
Yes, Shane should have performed better in that game but give the kid a break. It was his first real fucking game. Do you remember what OSU fans were saying about JT Barrett after Virginia Tech?

Which was his first game? Because it sounds like you're trying to tell me Minnesota was "his first real fucking game" after telling me he played in the difficult BWW bowl. Which wouldn't make sense.
JT Barrett had AN AWFUL game versus VT and still had 2 more TDs in one game than Morris has had in his career. He nearly had 300 yards of total offense in the worst game of his short career. Are you really going to compare Shane Morris to TJ Barrett? A kid who finished 5th in the Heisman this year?
Jeez, I'm now coming off like I hate Morris or I'm bashing him just because I can willingly say he's done jack shit since he's been at Michigan. Same as Speight. Same as Malzone. Same as Gentry. None of them have accomplished a damn thing.
So let's see who's the best, it very well may be Morris. Or maybe Morris is 4th in that group of 4. None of us know today and Morris has done nothing to start out ahead of the rest except be born before the other guys. That's not good enough.
It's not like Morris even has more experience than the other guys in the system. They're all at level 1. So he doesn't even have that advantage.
This isn't Denard vs. Devin when Hoke took over. Denard had accomplished A LOT before Hoke. He deserved to go into the first year of Hoke/Borges as the #1. Morris has not earned that one bit. Let him earn it and all of us will be happy for him - no question.

Shane morris has the best arm and the best feet.
If harbaugh can't make him great it can't be done.

He has very good feet for a "pocket" QB. He has a very elusive quick step wiggle and he steps up into the pocket agressively.
His issue is not his feet. It's his aim.

February 6th, 2015 at 9:21 PM ^
Even though he looked rough at times, he's got the gun and athleticism to be a great QB. I think under some good Harbaugh coaching he'll be a good starter.
Not sure if the Speight hype is based on actual confidence in Speight or a lack of confidence in Morris (but I suspect the latter)

I still am bummed when I remember drew henson.
He is from my hometown of brighton and I was crushed when he never really made it.
From what he said in the gammonds interview I am guessing it nags at him a bit too.
What a talent he was. And brady kept his butt on the bench.
At least he tried for his dream I guess.

He could have, and should have, been another Drew Brees.

Maybe over the offseason, but after week 1 (ND) it seemed like most rallied behind Brady.
I can honestly say I was a Brady guy that whole time. I wanted to start the senior with a year's experience under his belt instead of the sophomore with limited experience.

The last two thirds of the season was all Brady. After September he owned the job and the team. He took it straignt to Ohio State and Alabama.
