Cardale Jones presser at 3pm, expected to go pro

Submitted by I Like Burgers on

Looks like Cardale Jones is holding a press conference at 3pm today and all signs point to him going pro.  Personally, I think its a good decision.  His stock will likely never be higher, he's 22 years old, has a new baby to take care of, and there's no guarantee he'll be the starter at Ohio State next season.  And Meyer isn't really known for developing QBs.  So why not go pro and have NFL guys mold you into a QB and get paid while doing in?

Dr. Evil describing his upbringing:

“My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a 15-year-old French prostitute named Chloé with webbed feet. My father would womanize; he would drink; he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes, he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament…”

It is a bit crazy, but the three games he's played were three big time games, and two of those teams were really good.  I mean, look at what he did vs Oregon's defense compared to what Jameis did.  And Jameis is being touted as a top 10 type of QB.  Jones didn't make many mistakes in any of the games, so would another season of games where he beats up on the Rutgers and Indianas of the world really show NFL types that much more?

He's excelled on the highest stages in CFB, and that's really all the NFL guys are looking for. Another season wouldn't do much to change that.

He will certainly be making more than the average person, but it will almost certainly be league minimum. And let's be honest, as a late round pick there is a real good chance he is out of the league in a year or two. The NFL does not like to use roster spots for developmental projects, and if there is a coaching change on the team that drafts him, he will almost certainly be gone. He is likely to make more by going now, I'll grant you that. But I don't think he is going to make a lot of money on his NFL venture. In fact, this may be a case where s degree would get him more money over his lifetime.

is $510,000 in 2015.  Realistically, it would take him 10 years to make that outside of the NFL.

Or do you think someone with Mr. Jones' affinity for school is going to land a 6 figure salary, with an OSU degree, right out of college?

Yeah, that was on Tuesday. I was at that press conference and it was pretty interesting.  Urban seemed a lot higher on Cardale's NFL future than Cardale was.  Urban said his stock will likely never be higher.  And Meyer said that he hadn't talked to Jones about the NFL at that point yet either.

So I'm guessing the two of them had a conversation shortly after, got some feedback from NFL types, and with all the uncertaintly about Ohio State's offense (don't forget they lost Herman too)...it just makes more sense to go pro even though he's only started three games.

Never take a public figures statements to the media as truth.  Saban was saying until the day he was hired by Alabama that he was staying in Miami, Harbaugh said he hadn't given much thought to the Michigan job at his last SF press conference, and there are countless other examples of people blatantly lying to the media.

I know this would never happen, but can you imagine the meltdown OSU fans would have if braxton transferred here?

He wouldn't even be the first OSU QB to transfer to Michigan.

I suppose it's a good decision considering his situation, but who is going to draft Cardale Jones as a QB?  He hasn't really shown any skills that the NFL values other than arm strength. I'm not saying he doesn't have those skills, but what a risky pick this would be at anything above the 5th round.

His best case scenario is going somewhere like Pittsburgh where they wont need him for three years. He will learn more about NFL QBing there than he will developing in a non-pro style offense at OSU. He's like a blank slate. If you're a team with a solid QB situation, but a need for the future, he's a terrific luxury pick in the 3rd round.

as by then it's a crapshoot to whether the pick will make the cut.

If you think of him as an option, the variability of outcome greatly increases his value around the strike/cut price.

I say someone jumps ahead of the others with a fourth round pick.  Maybe even a third rounder but there you're normally counting on the pick to stick.

Granted he went in the 7th round but he never started a game let alone beat Alabama or win a NC as a starter. He had attempted fewer passes and never threw for a TD in his career at USC. Cardale Jones looks like a 6 time Heisman winner compared to Matt Cassel comming out of college.

I don't blame him at all. He looks like a poor man's Cam Newton, but that should be more than enough to get him drafted.

Great size, pretty good accuracy from what we can see, decent to good mobility, and built like a linebacker so you know he'll be tough to bring down. I can see him being a prospect that some team picks up in the mid to late rounds as a development project with a lot of potential upside, and not a lot of risk.

He'll probably never have another 3 game stretch that was so successful and publicized. Go to the NFL Cardale, go to it.

Cardale's floor is Tim Tebow in the NFL and ceiling is Cam Newton.

That's a massive variance.  But with the lack of good QBs in the league, I fully expect someone to take a chance on him in the 3rd.  If he is Cam Newton lite you look like a genius.  If not, well a lot of 3rd rounders don't work out.
