Cardale Jones presser at 3pm, expected to go pro
Looks like Cardale Jones is holding a press conference at 3pm today and all signs point to him going pro. Personally, I think its a good decision. His stock will likely never be higher, he's 22 years old, has a new baby to take care of, and there's no guarantee he'll be the starter at Ohio State next season. And Meyer isn't really known for developing QBs. So why not go pro and have NFL guys mold you into a QB and get paid while doing in?

I think Jameis is Jamarcus 2.0. They have almost identical college stats and both have a penchant for off-field buggery.

Jones seems alot more motivated than Russell.

Dr. Evil describing his upbringing:
“My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a 15-year-old French prostitute named Chloé with webbed feet. My father would womanize; he would drink; he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes, he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament…”

It seems crazy after only starting three games, but agreed that it is a good decision to turn pro.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:12 PM ^
It is a bit crazy, but the three games he's played were three big time games, and two of those teams were really good. I mean, look at what he did vs Oregon's defense compared to what Jameis did. And Jameis is being touted as a top 10 type of QB. Jones didn't make many mistakes in any of the games, so would another season of games where he beats up on the Rutgers and Indianas of the world really show NFL types that much more?
He's excelled on the highest stages in CFB, and that's really all the NFL guys are looking for. Another season wouldn't do much to change that.

I didn't say he didn't make any mistakes, I said he didn't make many. The fumble was bad, but he made a lot of good decisions and threw some great deep balls.

Go get that money Cardale! Then you can just buy a school to play in.

is $510,000 in 2015. Realistically, it would take him 10 years to make that outside of the NFL.
Or do you think someone with Mr. Jones' affinity for school is going to land a 6 figure salary, with an OSU degree, right out of college?
January 15th, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^
I thought I saw a story just yesterday that he said he felt it was too early for him to go pro...am I imagining things? EDIT: Nope, I'm not imagining things....this was from two days ago it seems: http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls14/story/_/id/12161205/ohio-state-buckeyes-quarterback-cardale-jones-says-not-ready-nfl-yet?ex_cid=espnapi_public

That was two days ago. He's had two more days to mature physically and emotionally.

that he would like to take back before.

Yeah, that was on Tuesday. I was at that press conference and it was pretty interesting. Urban seemed a lot higher on Cardale's NFL future than Cardale was. Urban said his stock will likely never be higher. And Meyer said that he hadn't talked to Jones about the NFL at that point yet either.
So I'm guessing the two of them had a conversation shortly after, got some feedback from NFL types, and with all the uncertaintly about Ohio State's offense (don't forget they lost Herman too)...it just makes more sense to go pro even though he's only started three games.
January 15th, 2015 at 2:17 PM ^
Hmmmm...encourage Cardale to go pro so I can keep Miller & Barrett or keep Cardale and Miller transfers, now which one am I going to push for if I'm Urban Meyer....

Never take a public figures statements to the media as truth. Saban was saying until the day he was hired by Alabama that he was staying in Miami, Harbaugh said he hadn't given much thought to the Michigan job at his last SF press conference, and there are countless other examples of people blatantly lying to the media.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:02 PM ^
I know this would never happen, but can you imagine the meltdown OSU fans would have if braxton transferred here?
He wouldn't even be the first OSU QB to transfer to Michigan.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
Yikes. Even a QB guru like Harbaugh would have his hands full fixing this kid's technique.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:24 PM ^
I think there might be a similar meltdown here.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:29 PM ^
Meh, just get some duct tape and we're good.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:10 PM ^
I suppose it's a good decision considering his situation, but who is going to draft Cardale Jones as a QB? He hasn't really shown any skills that the NFL values other than arm strength. I'm not saying he doesn't have those skills, but what a risky pick this would be at anything above the 5th round.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:11 PM ^
Oakland. The same team that drafted JaMarcus Russell and Tyrrell Pryor.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:19 PM ^
If he is going to get drafted by the Raiders, Bagheera will have it the news for us here first on MGo.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
His best case scenario is going somewhere like Pittsburgh where they wont need him for three years. He will learn more about NFL QBing there than he will developing in a non-pro style offense at OSU. He's like a blank slate. If you're a team with a solid QB situation, but a need for the future, he's a terrific luxury pick in the 3rd round.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:37 PM ^
I could see a team like the Pats or the Saints, or even Green Bay take a look at Jones. Stash him on the bench for a couple of years, develop him, and then he's ready if/when your starter decides to hang 'em up.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
Oh, I believe you'll hear he's going in the 1st three rounds, likely 1st two. Wait and see.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:30 PM ^
as by then it's a crapshoot to whether the pick will make the cut.
If you think of him as an option, the variability of outcome greatly increases his value around the strike/cut price.
I say someone jumps ahead of the others with a fourth round pick. Maybe even a third rounder but there you're normally counting on the pick to stick.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:21 PM ^
Probably a team with an established starter. It's a weak year for QBs, so someone will take him, maybe even reach for him.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:03 PM ^
Given the relative lengths of the seasons in football and basketball, it's not much different than McGary.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:16 PM ^
That is certainly the situation it reminds me of. A meteoric rise on a national stage, combined with not much else, parlayed into (relatively) high draft stock.
January 15th, 2015 at 2:06 PM ^
January 15th, 2015 at 2:17 PM ^
I think the point was that McGary seriously considered going pro after his freshman year (and no one would have thought him crazy), even though he didn't start looking like an NBA caliber player until the tournament.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:04 PM ^
It's a very smart decision. Buy low, sell high.

Granted he went in the 7th round but he never started a game let alone beat Alabama or win a NC as a starter. He had attempted fewer passes and never threw for a TD in his career at USC. Cardale Jones looks like a 6 time Heisman winner compared to Matt Cassel comming out of college.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
Great size, pretty good accuracy from what we can see, decent to good mobility, and built like a linebacker so you know he'll be tough to bring down. I can see him being a prospect that some team picks up in the mid to late rounds as a development project with a lot of potential upside, and not a lot of risk.

He'll probably never have another 3 game stretch that was so successful and publicized. Go to the NFL Cardale, go to it.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:42 PM ^
should have gone pro after the NC game against Louisville.

January 15th, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
Cardale's floor is Tim Tebow in the NFL and ceiling is Cam Newton.
That's a massive variance. But with the lack of good QBs in the league, I fully expect someone to take a chance on him in the 3rd. If he is Cam Newton lite you look like a genius. If not, well a lot of 3rd rounders don't work out.
