Cardale Jones presser at 3pm, expected to go pro
Looks like Cardale Jones is holding a press conference at 3pm today and all signs point to him going pro. Personally, I think its a good decision. His stock will likely never be higher, he's 22 years old, has a new baby to take care of, and there's no guarantee he'll be the starter at Ohio State next season. And Meyer isn't really known for developing QBs. So why not go pro and have NFL guys mold you into a QB and get paid while doing in?

If you are the Eagles with Chip Kelly why not take a chance?

Tim Tebow started in the NFL and won playoff games. His floor is lower than that.

So if Jones goes pro, does that increase the chances that Braxton comes back to OSU? Im more intrigued by what Braxton does than Cardale.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:20 PM ^
I would think only if he believes his NFL prospects are as a receiver and he plays receiver for OSU. Else, he won't likely be the starter over Barrett.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:16 PM ^
Was actually hoping he stayed and they had some big time controversy at QB.
Now this pretty much guarantees Miller will stay, and probably start. And they still have 2 years of Barrett after Miller leaves.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:22 PM ^
They would be insane to start Braxton over Barrett. Barrett is a superior passer and it isn't even close.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:17 PM ^
Honestly, how has no one yet opposed that eminently ignorant claim?

I thought the very same. Urbz is so bad with QB development that his third string QB led them to wins in three of their biggest games of the year. How would Bellomy have looked in those games?

Probably what the OP is hinting at is developing NFL QB's. This I don't oppose at all. Can Urban find guys to shred it in his offense in college, most certainly. Do those guys go on to be successful in the NFL, not so much. I think maybe Alex Smith would be the only successful Urban QB???
January 15th, 2015 at 1:39 PM ^
This is true, but guys like Tebow and Chris Leak were never going to be developed into NFL-caliber QBs. His quarterbacks have had all kinds of shortcomings that are obvious to anyone. Leak was small, Braxton Miller doesn't have a very great arm, Tebow had some of the worst throwing technique anyone had ever seen. I don't really see that with Jones. He certainly has a higher ceiling than any of Meyer's previous QBs.
edit: I know Meyer didn't recruit Leak.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:28 PM ^
In fairness i believe he is talking about developing QBs for the NFL. Urbz QBs tear it up in college but not so much in the NFL. Which is fine because he's paid to win college games, not NFL games. But outside of Alex Smith, none of his QBs have done anything in the NFL. And many considered Smith "bust-ish" material until a certain head coach we are familiar with got ahold of him.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:47 PM ^
And it was Harbaugh that fixed Smith that made him a somewhat decent QB.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:34 PM ^
The OP was obviously talking about developing QBs for the NFL.

I'd like to see the Lions take him in the third round. LIke Tebow, you could put in a few packages for him that would be really difficult to defend, especially near the goal line.
We all joked about the kid's stupid comments, but he has said all the right things since then and hasn't gotten into trouble, so good for him andhis new family.

I can't think of another time recently where you've had someone start three games - three huge games, but three all the same - and do well enough to the point where suddenly the talk of them going pro escalated this quickly. Maybe I am not remembering someone, but it doesn't seem like this happens very often, so it is intriguing if nothing else. It makes sense for Jones on many levels though - there are probably a couple teams that would take him on just based on what is known right now, I imagine.

Different sport, but how about Mitch McGary in the 2013 NCAA Tournament? He, too, had a great three-week stretch.

Kyrie Irving only played 7-8 games for Duke his freshman year (because of injury) and then entered the draft and was the number 1 selection.

January 15th, 2015 at 1:39 PM ^
Smart move. His stock won't get higher unless there's injuries again, and he somehow plays better than he did in the last three games. It's crazy to think that a guy who was the third string player in the summer is now declaring for the draft.

I honestly don't get the comments about him being a bust. The NFL is littered with busts like -
- JaMarcus Russell (1st Rd #1)
- Vince Young (1st Rd #3)
- Blaine Gabbart (1st Rd #10)
- Christian Ponder (1st Rd #12)
- Brady Quinn (1st Rd #22)
The thing is, these guys were picked in the first round, where the expectation is that you are ready for the NFL. Jones is being projected in the 4-5th round which would put him more in a category with guys like -
- Mark Brunnell (5th Rd #118)
- Rich Gannon (4th Rd #98)
- Matt Hasselbeck (6th Rd #187)
- Kirk Cousins (4th Rd #102)
- Ryan Lindley (6th Rd #185)
If he were projected higher or someone took him higher then I think the bust label would apply more.

"I can't win the starting job in college, so I'm going pro to try to win that starting job."
Unless he just wants the money. Which, go for it.
January 15th, 2015 at 1:56 PM ^
Not sure why he wouldn't be able to win the starting job if he came back. He has the best arm of the three and is the hardest to tackle.

Transfer on out of there, son. JT Barrett is a very good QB, but I like the idea of zero depth behind him.

January 15th, 2015 at 3:27 PM ^
Yeah, OSU will only have Stephen Collier, Joe Burrow and Torrance Gibson as backups if Braxton and Cardale both leave.
January 15th, 2015 at 3:56 PM ^
And there's no chance that none of those guys are as productive as Miller or Barrett? Especially with two guys being true freshman?
You have to be a real homer to not see that it's much more preferable for others that Ohio State's backup is someone who hasn't played a down rather than someone who has spent at least one season as the Big Ten's most productive QB.
January 15th, 2015 at 4:38 PM ^
And they won an NC...so wow...dunno what that means other than I think Umich should assume OSU has a stud QB from here until Urban leaves.
January 15th, 2015 at 2:06 PM ^
or is he still looking to transfer? Major depth issues for the Nuts if Miller transfers.

Not sure how you can say that he cannot develop QB's when their 3rd sting QB led them to B1G ten championship game win, beat Alabama, and won the nation championship by 3 touchdowns. Their 3rd stringer is better than any of ours have been since 2007

Jones converted enough 3rd and longs in those three games to make me doubt it was all Elliott.
In fact, we could just as well note that Elliott's production increased once Jones got the starting nod. He wasn't racking up 200-yard games when Barrett was the QB.
January 15th, 2015 at 2:25 PM ^
Stock will never be higher, and nothing about Urban Meyer's offense will make him a better pro prospect next year.

January 15th, 2015 at 2:34 PM ^
Good for him.
As a Michigan fan and a fan of the ever-declining integrity of CFB, he is obviously not my favorite player of all time. But man, you have to respect his ability to take advantage of his one big break and turn it into a life-changing event.
He's the Chris Daughtry of college football.
