Gregg Henson: Wheatley is a lock and Singletary longshot to return

Submitted by Jim Harbaugh on

Henson says his source has told him that Wheatley is a lock for the RB coach at M. He knows it might be a small step back (or lateral), but see's the potential to be a heach coach or OC with time. He will join the staff sometime this week.

Also, noted that Chris Singletary is not expected to be retained according to his sources. A bit surprising because Singletary has tweeted many times regarding M in the time since Harbaugh has taken over.

EDIT: The comments on Singletary's film evaluating skills has been removed from Henson's post so I removed it as well.

He never "called" Josh Rosen.  He said a source told him Josh Rosen is in if Harbaugh is hired, but he admitted that he didn't  know how much stock to put into that since he knows next to nothing about recruiting.

Interesting that you conveniently forget that he was one of the very first to call DJ Durkin.

Meh, whoever was in his ear feeding him info on the coaching search was pretty dead on, so we'd be pretty ignorant to not listen what he has to say on the filling out of the rest of the staff.  At the least, he deserves better than being compared to Football Scoop. Outside of anything related to the coaching search, I'd absolutely take what he says with a grain of salt.

You're right, I'm wrong.  Even if they've been right about a bunch of things lately, if a sports insider reports something is going to or may happen, and they end up being wrong about it, we should disregard that individual forever more.  Great logic.

That said, by your own standards, does that mean we all need to find a new blog...

on The M&M Show about the 1st team meeting tonight. Anyone have sources who can report which coaches are present & accounted for at this pivotal moment ?

The Singletary criticism doesn't make sense. "Only evaluates" 4/5 star recruits? Why bother (in many cases)? Also consider that we have a lot of three star players and targets. I'd wager that he made all that up.

He did scouting for IMG to target which college players the agency wanted to go after.  Plus, he predated Hoke and though I could be wrong Rich Rod.  He's one of Lloyd's guys and he's the one who's been keeping the few recruits we currently have connected to UM.  I seriously doubt he's on the way out.

It is going to be sad for guys like Fred Jackson and Singletary who have devoted their life for Michigan but we are no longer just keeping the guys who love Michigan the most around. We need excellence at every position regardless of if you are a Michigan man or not.

Oddly enough, and despite all the talk about the Michigan Man thing supposedly being irrelevant, we certainly seem to be discussing Michigan Men like Harbaugh, Hackett, Wheatley, Mallory, Mattison, and others with Michigan ties and Michigan history an awful lot these days.

The Michigan Man is still important to this program, and the proof is in the pudding. Just an observation, and not a statement that it should or shouldn't be.

I imagine the first part is true.  Logically, Jim wouldn't want to pose for a photo with a candidate for the RB position (Wheatley) if he were truly undecided about it.  (He also probably wouldn't want to be seen in public with the candidate in the first place.)

I would question that going from the RBs coach of the Bills to the same position at Michigan is a step back. I know the Bills are in the NFL but I'd say it's approximately lateral

I wouldn't consider going from the bills to Michigan lateral... The u of m brand is way bigger than the buffalo bills. In terms of NFL to college maybe but harbaugh bucked that notion and it looks like Mora might be doing the same by staying at UCLA and saying screw the NFL and the prima donna overpaid crybabies!

so I am more objective than most here. The Bills are great, but they play in a smaller stadium, with a smaller fanbase and are easily one of the least noticeable teams in the NFL. OTOH, Michigan is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with the biggest stadium in the US, one of the largest fanbases, most wins, a ton of titles, 100k+ every game, etc. The aura of The Shield is the only thing making the Bills appear like a better gig than Michigan's. And again, I'm a Bills fan

Well, we live in a media dominated society now. People crave new information, every minute. Not so long ago, people read the newspapers and waited for the coach to hire someone. I mean, ask Bo back in the day, if it's true that he going to so-and-so as his linebacker coach, according to insider information, and figure out his response might be.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking down to you. Just giving my two sense about the secrecy.
