Harbaugh Update per Jeff Moss

Anyway, last night Jim Harbaugh called one of his former teammates. The conversation did not start well as my source states the San Fran head coach said, “Would you hate me if I didn’t come?”

1) Ted Spencer was U of M’s Athletic/Admissions dude for many years. Spencer left this year and has not been replaced. Harbaugh wants to replace Spencer with someone philosophically in line with Ted.

Harbaugh has concerns that Michigan President Mark Schlissel wants U of M to become more like Brown University. Schlissel’s response is that’s not how he wants to operate.

2) I can confirm that Harbaugh’s agent is the one who leaked the contract details to the national NFL media. Which is weird since the U of M athletic department kind of leaked the same information two weeks ago. Very strange.

3) Further complicating matters is it now appears the Atlanta Falcons are extremely interested in Jim’s services and might be ready to part ways with Mike Smith. And they have Home Depot money.

4) The only piece of good news my source can provide is Jack Harbaugh is still extremely desirous of his son’s return to his alma mater.

I don't know why.  This rings very true to me.  Harbaugh is probably going back and forth on this even now.  It concerns me he is still not locked up at least in his own mind. Plus, maybe even if he came here he would want to leave as soon as he could.  I just want this over.

As someone who's gone the distance to actual offer in more than one job situation, but found (and was always looking for) reasons to turn it down ... he's looking for reasons to turn it down.  The thing about the academics officer is consistent with what Brian was saying about chatter re JUCOs.

If he wanted it, you'd hear leaks from far closer sources saying he was leaning toward taking it.

The agent leaked the terms as bait for other NFL teams and -- what a shocker -- he got a catch in Arthur Blank.  We're not going to beat Arthur Blank on money if it's true he wants Harbaugh.

My sense is that the wavering optimism ffrom the Michigan "side" -- the now it's 40-60, now it's 80-20, yadda yadda has always had as its underlying source either Jack Harbaugh and/or other former teammates/close associates who Jim Harbaugh was talking to who were merely putting their own subjective interpretation on things Harbaugh was saying to them.  One day, he really "sounds like" he wants to do it; the next he sounds a little less so.  The "would you hate me if I didn't do it" (meaning, really, "I'm not going to do it, you guys won't hate me if I don't, right?") is precisely the type of thing he'd say in a conversation as he neared the time he actually had to say "Yes" knowing he wasn't going to.

to make a decision. If JH decides to head for Michigan, I doubt it will right after the NFL regular season. JH is going to be interested in what kind of trade deal the 49ers will work out for him. If the money same or more money is there with either Oakland or Atlanta. If may be too hard for JH to resist. Ever since our offer was made public, I have become less optimistic that Harbaugh will be the next HC of Michigan. My guess is that both Oakland and Atlanta will offer a biger deal than what Michigan can offer and he will probably take the Oakland job. I wish the contract proposal never had been leaked! If the NFL teams offer JH something less, I could see him just resigning and taking the Michigan job but now they won't.

The agent also leaked the terms of the offer to let the SF front office know it was an offer good enough to accept and that it shouldn't hold out for too much compensation from other pro teams, or otherwise get in the way of what JH wants to do with other pro teams -- lest he simply go to Michigan and leave them with no compensation.  It was an entirely necessary move from his perspective in order to most effectively deal with the SF front office, as he still has to do.

Yea, I believe this info.   My friend that continues to keep me posted sent me a text saying two things ...

1)  The vibe in the "team room" (his phrase) was not as positive today as they continue to receive "lots of quality info from a variety of sources".

2)  Someone in the rooms said  "The Mrs. is NOT on board" ... he explained it away by saying the schools are a question.

We're having some good days and bad days .... this is a bad day!

Edit: I sent him the statement from Scheftner about the Mrs ... his reply "yea, officially, she's on board.  But, we're hearing conflicting messages."

Okay, I'm not buying that, either. JH isn't likely to send his kids to public school. And even if he were so inclined, I'd put Gabriel Richard (he is a Catholic, after all) up against anyone in terms of academic reputation. If that doesn't suffice, I'm sure that Cranbrook Kingswood, Detroit Catholic Central, Ann Arbor Community High (public), etc., would more than compete with anyone in terms of quality of education.

I posted this on another thread but I think it makes sense here too as everyone is speculating on motivations and timing.  Forgive me if you disagree.

Food for thought:

Perhaps Jim really wants to come to Michigan but is trying to burn off some of his "flake" reputation by finishing the season and also by creating the impression of (or actually) considering NFL offers.

I imagine he would get tired of hearing that flake shit, and that given his personality (desire to win a superbowl, insane competitiveness) he would not want to look like he just gave up on the NFL and fled back to college tail between his legs. This way it paints a narrative of something he did for his family and for pride in his alma mater and doesn't look like he ran away after a disappointing season

Honestly if the 49ers got eliminated from the playoffs and he signed with Michigan the next day we would have all been dancing in the streets but it would have had some negative implications for his overall character, and perhaps damaged any chance he might have at returning to the NFL before retirement.

LMAO Anybody who has ever trully known Jim Harbaugh will tell you he would never say to somebody "Would you hate me if I didn't come" Nor is there any player that is close to Harbaugh who talks to the sociopath known as Jeff Moss. Sometimes people need to give articles the sniff test before believing them.

Again, why people are expecting an answer now still befuddles me.  Harbaugh isn't going to call someone and say "would you hate me if I didn't come?"  Harbaugh is a lot of things, but giving a shit about what other people think isn't one of them.

We'll know when we know; until then, the fact a guy isn't on Brian's "Ace Williams" list doesn't mean everything he says is gospel.

We should have all the info. we need come Monday or Tuesday at the latest.   They'll either start moving on #2 or we won't hear anything and that will be a clear sign that we're likely to be the happiest fan base in the country.

Harbaugh is ccoming to Michigan. If he had any doubts, Hackett would be interviewing other candidates already as Jim would have told him no. I also do not think that as businessman with all of his experience, Hackett wouldn't put all of his eggs in one basket unless he knew for sure it was a done deal.

I also don't think JH would hang a long time family friend out to dry by not taking the offier at the last minute and going to the NFL. He's not shopping the contract to NFL teams, he is not asking for more money or about admissions.

What he is doing is finishing the season with the 49'ers because he will not quit on his team during the season. The 49'ers wont fire him because they will owe him 5 million if they do. After the last game, Jim will either quit or he and the 49'ers will mutually agree to terminate his contract.

From what little I have learned about Harbaugh, I just don't see him leaving Hackett in a bad spot due to their family relationship.

Hope I am right.

I am sure Hackett has had other candidates vetted and is prepared to move forward. Really we are exactly where we have always been: it is Harbaugh's decision whether to stay in the NFL or coach Michigan, and he has not made it yet.

Absolutely agree SF Blue .... honestly, i can't sleep but at the end of the day, you're exactly right.

Trust in Jim!

Trust in Jim ... he knows what needs to happen!  He would have stopped all this last week if he truly didn't want to come .... again, i can't sleep but I keep coming back to this!!!!

i agree with you 100%.. I think a lot of this is "hype", listen if JH comes to Michigan from the nfl then isnt that kind of a good recruitung tool? UM is getting all sorts of press all over and i don think he dicks over hackett.. I feel Hackett knew he would get JH and thats what he did.. My buckeye friends keep mentioning how UM overpaid and blah blah and I take that as "FEAR"... im confident that he will be the coach and Im even more confident he crushes recruiting in the final month that we will have.. out

I haven't heard anyone on the internet or on tv mention one big draw that could pull Jim back home.

Brothers could win the Super Bowl and NC the same year.  That's never happened. They already made one record by coaching against each other in the Super Har-Bowl.

Balas thinks the  current rumor is also false.  So, why, other than getting attention, would somebody make it up?  This rumor

1.      Portrays Harbaugh as objecting to the values of President Schlissel—one of the few people who could scuttle the hire

2.      Portrays Harbaugh as a hypocrite, who goes against standards he previously advocated

3.      Conjures up memories of an old statement from Harbaugh that once alienated UM alums (and that H now regrets)..

4.      Gets fans thinking about hatred by posing the initial question: would you hate me?

If I didn’t know better, I’d think that the guy making up this rumor is trying to stir up discontent.  Granted, that would be like trying to pump the hole in flipper's head.  It’ll never work.  But nothing coming from these internet rumor mongers would surprise me.

that it's hard to know.....but I'd think that some schools or NFL teams would have a lot more to gain by flooding the net with false rumors.

Also, I'd guess that Brandon's rumors would be much more insulting.

Honestly, I just don't see him coming. I pray I am wrong, but my gut feeling is he winds up staying in the nfl and only considered our offer because of its ginormity. I don't think he has any real interest at ths level, as it is night and day from the NFL. It isn't over yet, but at this point I think Steve addazio has as much chance to coach in Ann arbor as Jim Harbaugh. Sorry.

Atlanta certainly could be moving on from Smith, but Dimitroff is still there. I suppose that he could be gone too, or Harbaugh could work with him, but that does not seem like the situation he'd want to walk in to if the "control of the roster" thoughts are true.
