How potential coaches feel after reading mgoblog/press
More serious is what we players are looking for in a new coach:
1. Passionate about winning
2. Cares about the players and their families by checking up and seeing how they are doing
3. Very Strict on dicipline because at the end of the day you are building a young man on how to be responsible for their own actions
4. Have passion for the game in general and you can tell easily
5. Are serious about education and academics
6. Community involvement. Having players be more active and apart of normal student activities
7. Agressive and caring coaching style and getting on you if you have a mistake and making sure you learn from it
8. Having fun at the end of the day and enjoying a great game of football

I'm looking for a coach that is a lady in the streets but a freak in the sheets. That's probably tops on my list of requirements. Second is probably a proven winner. But it is a distant second.

RichRod was halfway there with his Josh Groban incident.

Then he tripped on his boa trying to leap in after it. Keep your piss warm, JL!

Genuine curiousity: How did Brady Hoke do when it came to #7? From a fan's viewpoint it would appear he sorely lacked in that department, but behind closed doors were things different?
December 10th, 2014 at 1:56 PM ^
He did but in his own way, but more like a friend. We understood that he was getting on us for a reason and others can take criticism then most.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:06 PM ^
Appreciate the response.

Thanks for the response.
I have this theory that maybe Hoke was/is too nice? If you look at Bo, Lloyd, Saban, Dantonio, Meyer, etc. they are guys that are pretty stern leaders. They seem pretty serious and it is fun when you get them loosened up every once in awhile but their main demeanor is very serious. I wouldn't want to be a ref on the sideline missing a call for any of them whereas Hoke it seemed like he would ask where the call was, clap a bit, and give the ref a pat on the back when in my opinion he should be losing his mind.
Same goes for the players, maybe they felt like he was their friend b/c he was nice, supportive, etc. It seems his personality is more fitting for an assistant role as he can be that mentor to them and be the buffer between the athlete and the head coach. The head coach being someone you fear, for lack of a better word.
Not sure I did a great job of verbalizing my thoughts, does that make sense and have any legitimacy to it?
December 10th, 2014 at 2:26 PM ^
It's like being a parent. If you're too much of a friend or peer, you may be fun, but they don't respect you. If you create boundaries, rules, and structure, they may get pissed at you, but they know they need it and will develop into more self-disciplined, well-balanced people.

Maybe a better way to explain it is intensity. Maybe he just lacked a certain level of intensity that the other coaches you mentioned have. I've never played football, but it seems like the players would expect that from a coach, even when it veers into harsh territory if they're not playing up to expectation. Not publicly - that's unnecessary - just raising the "disappointment" level when someone isn't working hard enough. They're old enough now to be able to handle that.

Absolutely, I wonder if Golson at ND hasn't been a victim of Kelly's raving lunacy.

reminds me of junior high dances. Those of us who know those references are showing our age!!
December 10th, 2014 at 8:32 PM ^
Junior High!?
I was listening to that in East Quad drinking Weidmnans.
December 10th, 2014 at 1:40 PM ^
Definitely find no fault with that list.
Once upon a time I'd have said, "Come on, man, like any players or coaches are reading this," but obviously you are for one, and I think in this age of social media, even the people who are actually out there doing the things the rest of us are just talking about, have their ears a lot more wired into that talk than we think. I would hope no potential coaching candidate or player/recruit would read too deeply into what gets said here, as there are definitely some loose cannons to go with a little collective hysteria over whether it's going to be Harbaugh. If it's not him, then whomever it is needs to be assured he has 100% support, not just from within the program but from the fanbase as well.
December 10th, 2014 at 1:59 PM ^
Yes I agree, some could take the social media way out of hand. And some could use it as a learning tool or educate themselves. If I had to pick on which coach it would be Harbaugh would be at the top of the list.
December 10th, 2014 at 4:55 PM ^
Harbaugh it is.
Call him up Vincent, and tell him to get his ass over here.

HARBAUGH!!!!!!!!!!

What would you know about who should coach Michigan?

December 10th, 2014 at 1:42 PM ^
Who's your suggestion for head coach that fulfills these 8 areas?
December 10th, 2014 at 2:01 PM ^
I don't know, what do you think?
December 10th, 2014 at 2:06 PM ^
Thanks so much for these posts, Vincent. I am interested to know if you care to share your opinion regarding specific potential candidates, including: Les Miles, Steve Addazio, Jim Mora. I totally understand if you don't feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, but figured it was worth asking. Thank you!
December 10th, 2014 at 2:18 PM ^
I don't know that much about them to give you an honest opinion. I know they are good coaches and have great winning records but I don't know what they are like on the field and in practice with players.

ThadMatt--I think your shark-horse avatar needs to have wings.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:36 PM ^
fine the way it is. If you add wings, there's just too much going on. The world isn't ready for that.
December 10th, 2014 at 1:46 PM ^
Unless that coach is named Harbaugh they need not answer the phone, that's the message our fanbase and media is sending out.
December 10th, 2014 at 1:47 PM ^
What is Mr. Smith's take on returning to football as a coach? Someone needs to teach the backs how to pick up a blitz or disguise a throwback screen.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:02 PM ^
I think Coach Jackson has that in a bread basket. He taught me everything I know, I just put a little sauce on it with my talent.
December 10th, 2014 at 4:58 PM ^
Seriously though, would you consider a career in coaching? You have the game eperience and the X's and O's knowledge, but also the broader perspective that you need to be a coach and a leader.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:04 PM ^
on the Coach search committee? A recent player who is young and has been coached by more than one guy. Valuable input there...

Oh, wait . . .
December 10th, 2014 at 1:47 PM ^
Hackett or his people could get a lot of great intel on which coaches are more popular with the fanbase. (This assumes that the cross section of people posting here can be extrapolated across the entire fan population) Although, this might be one of many factors he looks at, it does have a bearing on potential ticket sales and future donations. So, who we think is a great or good choice does have some impact.
December 10th, 2014 at 1:51 PM ^
Democratic vote... yes... I like. And of course, the coaches have no say in whether or not they are hired.
December 10th, 2014 at 1:50 PM ^
MGoBlog is such a well-connected place that I was actually hoping we would get a player perspective on this because the hire affects them and their lives more than anyone, so thanks for sharing this. Whoever it might be - Harbaugh or otherwise - is hopefully someone who can fulfill those very things. Indeed, I think some of these same thoughts have been expressed at least in a roundabout way by Schlissel and now Hackett as well - they seem to want these things too.
December 10th, 2014 at 2:03 PM ^
Which every coach we decide to pick I know it will be the right one at the end of the day. I will suport him 100%
