Beaver: Hackett taking a run at Harbaugh through the 49ers

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

longtime user Paly33 posted this in the thread below this one.

Don't want to start a new thread for this but over on Scout board, (GBW writer Tom) Beaver claims that one of his sources has a friend close to SF situation that Hackett will be making a major move for JH "through the 49ers". It would be bigger than what we would've thought was possible.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

"You'd think if Jim doesn't want the job, he would have already made that clear to the school." I guess ... if you wanted to stop a bidding war between the 49ers, Raiders, Jets, Bears and Wolverines. Or you could just not say a word and let the hype and media pump this up, while owners and an AD throw bags of money at you.

But, I'd like to think the JH has enough respect for his school to say he isn't interested if he isn't. If there is a bidding war, it really doesn't matter if there are 4 bidders or 3.

Whther or not Harbaugh is actually doing anything, if you attach his name to the job officially, you have recruits staying committed and you also have guys on the fence waiting to at least talk to a coach to see if they do indeed want to come here.

And I'll bet it really wasn't very difficult. As an experienced leader and fellow Schembechler disciple, Hackett would have known that the path to Harbaugh would have been through his heart, not his mind. People in a position of leadership often talk of "moving the heart" and that would have been the objective of Hackett's message.

Hackett would have reams of Schembechler-isms to borrow from, by which Harbaugh could not help but be moved:

  • "Those Who (Return) ... Will Be Champions"
  • (Coach in the NFL and) "you'll play for this, you'll play for that..."
  • "No man is bigger than the team..." (and this team needs you, Jim)

Few NFL coaches become all-time legends. In the end, they are journeymen who serve at the pleasure of the owners. College coaches can be remembered for generations and become larger than life. There are only a few places like Michigan where that kind of stature can be practically assured.

In the end, Hackett wouldn't even have to say any of it; Harbaugh would have known it all along.

how people are so skeptical about him coming back.  Sure he was probably offered the gig a few years ago.  But it seems so much different now.

If he knew Brady Hoke wanted the job and he liked Brady Hoke, he probably would have enjoyed the idea of going to get the pay day in the NFL and let Brady Hoke pursue his dream.

Now legacies are on the line.  It seems that everything Bo built (with his own father and Jerry Hanlon) now seems to be in shambles.

He is looked to as the savior to resurrect the single greatest influence of his life (if no one believes me look at how he is quoting bow even after the win against Washington.

It doesn't take days to find out if he is even interested in talking about the opening.  Hackett is playing it close to the vest, so we won't know what that answer is but Hackett knows.  I honestly believe that by next week we will either hear something concrete about possible negotiations with the 49ers or we will have a new coach not named JH.  All our other targets are available immediately.

One thing is for certain, all of these reports are just rumors. The people in the know are going to keep it quiet. Hackett either knows that JH is interested or will know within a day or two. I believe if JH is not interested he will say so. There is no advantage for him to string us along. I'd say your timeline is a bit aggressive but probably not far off.

You'd think the answer is obvious, but it's really not. You're assuming that JH would have already told Hackett if he wasn't interested. But maybe he's hedging his bets. Maybe he's waiting to see how his own season plays out before he decides what he wants to do. Maybe he's waiting to see how the other possible NFL teams fare - will it be the Jets or the Bears? There are a lot of factors here, and if I was JH, I might not tip my hand at all at this point.

The cute kitten avatar makes me doubt your understanding of the Y chromosome.

The Y chromosome wants to conquer. It wants to live forever.

Harbaugh is set up for living legend status in a unique way here at Michigan.

Trust the Y chromosome to make the only rational decision.

But we're talking about football and not women so your understanding of the Y chromosome is way off base here.  Men live and die for their football teams.  We stick with them no matter how bad they are or no matter how many games they lose.  Women, on the other hand, we only stick with them until someone better comes along.

I'm just saying someone from UM has asked JH if he has any interest in hearing what UM has to offer.  I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be completely genuine in answering that question.  If he says no, UM walks.  If he says yes, UM will make the timeline work even if it means waiting till the NFL season is over.

* I know.  Lumpy's no longer with us (RIP Frank Bank); but "The Beav" communicates with him through seances.

Trying not to get my hopes up about Harbaugh coming here. News like this isn't making it any easier. That said, who knows what this really means...

that told me he knows someone close to Lloyd Carr and that if we don't get a guy by the first of February, he would consider coming out of retirement to coach. Point being--see how easy it is to know a guy who knows a guy and make some crap up? I'll wait for reliable sources. This shouldn't be a thread.

1) Direct talks completely void of any monetary exchange for anything. 2) Owner being given/promised an honorary title with the school of some kind that allows for salary. This could be used as a promised future payment for, say, firing an employee. 3) Suggesting that a certain NFL team would make a trade of some kind that is only beneficial to SF after the season in exchange for firing an employee. That team could happen to be Miami and it might be a 4th rounder for SF's scout team punter. 4) Talking as men and not an NFL owner/GM and CFB AD to state the obviousness that Jim doesn't want to be there and he'll refuse a long term deal with just about any team you send him to without his say so you might as well fire him as you won't be coaching against him. 5) I know of no other way that the NCAA wouldn't see as direct tampering with professionals (money) to obtain a commodity to better your CFB team.

1.  UM does not want to interfere with Harbaugh's contract.  This is separate from internal NFL rules on tampering.

2.  UM must compete with NFL teams that can offer draft picks.  We must offer cash to the 49ers, plus pay Harbaugh's salary.  49ers won't pay his salary whether he comes here or stays in NFL.

This is a great idea.  Compete directly with the NFL.

I'm being serious. How is it any different from the athlete rules of amateurism or general recruitment? It's genius if it's legal but is it ok with the NCAA to better your team or obtain a professional commodity with cold, hard cash directly to said professional organisation? I mean, NCAA teams hire HS coaches/family sometimes to land a recruit but if you openly sent a HS $100k and that HS has, say, the top player in the country, you're going to get looked at and likely hit. I guess I should just say that it would be just as illegal to have, say, Miami promise to draft a recruit in the 1st round no matter what if he went to UM. It's pro-amateur tampering. Is it cool if it's not players? Is it cool in the sense that a school can employ anyone in any way they desire, HC of the FB team or Law Professor? If it's legal, just toss a Brinks Truck at SF if you know Jim is interested. Pay to make a new contract that releases him but can only sign with an NCAA team or certain shitty NFL teams. I dunno lol...

Would it be an NCAA violation for me to offer to personally sweeten the pot for Jim Harbaugh?

Jim, if you're reading this, I will personally give you $9.50 if you take the position of head coach at the University of Michigan's football program.

Just to be clear, this is ABOVE and BEYOND whatever the university itself will be paying you.

So if you were on the razor's edge as to whether to return to Ann Arbor, consider yourself pushed over the edge, baby!

And if you win the Big Ten, that $9.50 becomes an even $10.  Hamilton, baby!

Here is a link since I don't want to give up too much premium content:

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&f=1088&t=13438357

Basically, 3 other regular sources have confirmed or brought this same information to his attention and that from his knowledge don't know each other. One of his regular sources said "Something is up in SF, dunno what".

Things are brewing folks, who knows what, but I think I see some smoke......
