Hoke: starting QB to be named later this week

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Was supposed to be named today.

Could it be that the longer this is dragged out, it's more likely to be Morris?

Hoke on QB decision: "We'll probably end up later in the week. we want to make sure we're right."

Hoke: "we feel good about both guys. other potential changes we'll get to later in the week"

I feel like they actually were going to name one today but the coaches are seeing that neither Gardner nor Morris has stuck out in practice. Not a good sign to me. Or this could be typical Hoke keeping stuff close to the vest im hopes of an adavantage, which at this point we need anything we can get.

Do you honestly believe that? I get it, "they both suck, har har." But, their skillsets couldn't be more different. One is a dynamic athlete that can't seem to push the ball more than 20 yards downfield (like physically). The other is a semi-mobile guy with a rocket launcher arm. You don't think that's going to change how Minnesota defends?

I think a big reason our offense has stalled since last year is that, starting in the 2nd half of the 2013 ND game, defenses have known exactly how to gameplan for Gardner, which is rush and rattle him and he won't respond well. Defenses don't know how mentally tough Morris is yet, and if they play him the same way they play Gardner, it could just be that he burns their asses for it.

and he won't respond well.  That comment is true for just about every QB that has played football.  Even Peyton Manning's performance drops when you get pressure on him - just look at his last two outings against Seattle.

Now Manning isn't looking like Gardner when the Bronco's play the Seahawks, but a lot more of this throws are off target.  Different QB's will handle pressure different, but if you get good consistent pressure on a QB, their performance is going to fall.  It's just a matter of how far the performance drop off is.

You know you can't have linemen from other teams right?

I say we move Glasgow back to center, Houma and Hill block/leak out of the backfield and we go 7 wide and chuck the ball all over the yard.

He did get hammered pretty good after the ND game.

After all these months of practice, I can't believe Shane could do anything spectacular between now and Friday to change any minds.  And of what I've seen of him in the bowl game and this season makes me think he should have been redshirted last year, because he does not look ready.  This is not Elvis Grbac stepping in for Michael Taylor or Todd Collins stepping in for Grbac when he was injured.  Those guys looked ready from the first snap of game action.

My best guess is they're waiting to see if DG will be 100% or close to it by Friday.

Hoke never said they would name a starter today. He said they would "make a decision" today (which they didn't apparently). Anyone who thought Hoke would reveal the staff's decision was bonkers to assume so.

our injury secrecy has worked so well.  Given that our offensive scheme will likely be almost exactly the same no matter the QB, Minnesota won't be too burdened by not knowing the starter.  Even then, I think they can prep for both without too much difficulty.  Perhaps we should change QBs every series, if surprise is the goal.

If we haven't noticed, our preparation and play against teams with a pulse this year has been total garbage. The idea that we need to distract the opponent or obfuscate our lineup to get an edge is so far beyond what I care about right now. Spend your time figuring out how to get in the redzone, not on nonsense like this.

Besides that, the point is that he said he'd have a decision today, and now he says he doesn't. Nobody here is complaining about the fact that he didn't tell the press what the decision was. Promising to do something and then not delivering is not an impressive way to handle your business, wherever you work.

You know what?  I don't remember the last time I was watching an opposing coach who had just played Michigan sitting there  in the press conference saying,

"we didn't expect to lose any games this year, but the cloak and dagger elusiveness of those formations and plays that Michigan laid on us left us IN UTTER AND  COMPLETE SUPRPRISED RUIN!  WOE IS ME WE WERE SO BAFFLED that we didn't even know what hit us!  We knew we were in trouble when Brady wouldn't tell his fans anything BUT WE NEVER KNEW JUST THE KIND OF ABSOLUTE BEAT DOWN WE WOULD SUFFER AT THE HANDS OF BRADY HOKE ON SATURDAY!    MAKE IT STOP!  TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFF!  EVERYTHING I HAVE LEARNED IS WRONG!!!  UNCLE!  UNCLE!

I must have missed that press conference.

I don't know if that is the standard, but there seems to be enough data on Devin to simply move him to WR, put Morris in there and let him take his licks.

I don't think he is an upgrade, but no one is asking me anyway.

Speight (is he being red-shirted?) can back up Morris and Gardner can be opposite #1.

The reason I actually thought they would name a starter today is because of practice and game prep. You want your starter to get as many reps as possible with the starters. Im sure right now they are splitting reps, but with how both QBs performed so far, whoever the starter is needs the majority of them. I feel the coaching staff is doing a disservice to the team by not naming a starter now. It's time to put feelings aside. I know DG is a 5th year senior, one of your leaders, but he played poorly. It's time for Shane to get a shot.

Although I can understand why he or any coach sometimes take the approach to the media that  Hoke seems to take 98% of the time, the irony of his lie-telling record vs. his garnering of a reputation of a man of integrity is somewhat hypocritical in my view.  His ultimate reputation is going to be a man of denseness if he keeps going the way he is going...and he barely perceives that he is not on the right road as far as I can tell.
