Let's Talk Super Bowl

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on January 31st, 2024 at 9:24 PM

Mates,

Most all of us watched the Lions have a great first half vs. SF, only to fall flat on our figurative face in the 2nd half.  Man...so close.  Yet, the Super Bowl is 11 days away.  The Niners opened up as 2.5 pt favorites, went down to 1 pt favs, and now it shows they are 2 pt favs (YMMV - different sites, etc.).

Watching Brock Purdy, the kid looked very good for a 2nd year QB, very good.  His running in the 2nd half was back-breaking, as were our own dropped passes... And you have to love Christian McCaffrey, the guy is full-on effort and always seems to grind forward no matter when or where you hit him.  He must be a beast in the weight room.  The Niners have Ambry Thomas, Jake Moody and Ronnie Bell on their roster.

As for the Chiefs, love him or hate him, Mahomes got it done once again.  Their main back, Pacheco, is our old friend from Rutgers and is a very solid NFL back.  The only Michigan guy on their roster is Mike Danna.  It is unbelievable that he is in his 4th year in the NFL.  Frank Clark was in KC for 4 years but is now in Seattle.

As to betting, the line is now 2 pts as Niner favorites.  The money line is a very, very slim +128 for the Chiefs, -108 for the Niners.

Tonight's questions:

1.  Who is your pick to win, with or without the 2 pts given or taken, and with respect to the money line?

2.  Regardless of who you think will win, who do you want to win.

Go Blue, Forward down the field,

Feels like San Francisco hasn't played a good game yet with both Green Bay and Detroit handing them victories and Kansas City has been gritting through it.

I'm torn between Mahomes being inevitable and San Francisco being the better team that actually puts it together all 4 quarters.

31-21 San Francisco. 49ers become the first team to go over 30 points on Kansas City's defense this year.

Yeah. I don't know. I don't credit defenses for sloppy ball handling.  Flowers got his for taunting as well. He was a gift to the Chiefs. I hope he learns.  One of the reasons Michigan won it all this year was low turnover margin. If you let them punch it out that is on you.

But, for sure, it's great D.  My bad. Seems like the Ravens gave the Chiefs a bunch of Flowers. That is all.

Oh and the head but by Van Noy - dumb.

1. Chiefs. Mahomes the best player on the field.

2. Niners. If it can’t be the Lions let it be one for the Bay. Moody kicks the game winning FG and becomes immortal

I'll probably end up watching it with my dad and my wife, since it is a nice excuse to get together and make some fun food, but I'm not really all that interested in the game, after the way the Lions lost the other night. That said, San Francisco is kind of the other NFL team I root for- I've got a lot of fondness for the city itself, since it was the first big city I went to as a kid. My dad lived out there for quite a while, starting when I was in undergrad, so I went out to visit a quite a bit. I was actually in San Fran when the Niners beat Green Bay in the playoffs in 2022 and saw the Capitol building all lit up for it, it was pretty neat.

I'm a Chiefs fan, so this would be a downright amazing year for me to get UM winning a national championship that I got to attend and a Chiefs Super Bowl (though probably not going to attend). Was really hoping for a Lions/Chiefs Super Bowl so I could just be in heaven.

I'm biased, but I don't get the line in this game, a bit surprised by it. If this was about 8 weeks ago I don't think this game would be close and the advanced stats show that while KC was solid, SF was essentially better in almost every area. But SF has not looked nearly as good in the playoffs, while KC has looked a lot better and seemed to be playing their best at the right time. While the opposite is true for SF. That being said, I could see this being a close game because:

  • SF is very good at running the ball, and this is KC's weakness. CMC should have a very good game if Kyle doesn't go pass happy.
  • SF can use motion to get Deebo clean releases. They'll move him around a lot I'm guessing.
  • SF is very good at defending the middle of the field, where KC needs to be able to play to move the ball with Rice/Kelce.
  • KC is good at running the ball and SF run D has been poor in the playoffs. I expect a big Pacheco day assuming Andy doesn't go pass happy (which has definitely been known to happy).

Frankly, I just don't think Purdy is that good. He has some things he does well, but I think he's their weak spot and could see KC exploiting that. In a clean pocket he's okay, but his advanced stats under pressure are not good. He's also I'm pretty convinced the luckiest player in the NFL (banking a pass off a defenders facemask for a 51 yard completion), and maybe that continues and throws passes right to defenders that they drop. So who knows, but I'm hoping that the lucky finally ends.

Again, bias and all, but I took the KC Moneyline at +115 right when it came out.

I think you know who I want to win...

Also a Chiefs fan, and I'm wondering if Willie Gay is going to be active/healthy? If not, then you've got him & Omenihu out (ACL). The pass rush was way down after Omenihu got injured, and I'm more worried about that than stopping the run. I expect Shanny will stop calling the run at some point like the rest of the genius young OC's have been doing these playoffs. The team that makes the fewest mistakes & wins time of possession will win this game.

Yeah, Gay being the key spy is also important if Purdy scrambles as much as he did against the Lions. He's been a limited participant again this week (he tried to go last week, was expected to play as of Saturday, but his neck tightened on him overnight according to reports). I'd say he's up in the air.

Omenihu loss sucks. Karlaftis and Jones need to be the ones to bring pressure, along with some good Spags blitz packages (assuming they're going to bring safety and nickels a bit more). I assume FAU will get more reps too, but he hasn't done much of anything for being a Round 1 pick.

Purdy's completion percentage for his career is 67.5%, which is better than the NFL average of 63.2%. His passer rating is 100.7, which is also better than the NFL average of 93.4. His interception rate is 2.4% and this year lower compared to a league career average 2.7%.  Considering he was a young QB this seems to say he is above average on most metrics (except pay.)

I get that he is no Mahomes. Just asking what you are saying here Sal.  Are we watching the same guy?

As a Raiders fan (although with their moves - LA back to Oakland to Vegas, I'm not nearly as into them as I used to be) this is a meteor game for me, hate to see either win.

That being said, I think the Chiefs win and probably by double digits.

I don’t really give a shit who wins, but since SF beat the Lions I guess I’m rooting slightly for KC. Not sure I’ll watch any of it; it’s been years since I’ve watched more than a quarter of a SB.

Don’t give a shit about the Swift hoo-ha.  Have never heard one second of a Swift song; the few radio stations I listen to would never play her stuff anyhow.

SF 26  KC 24, primarily because SF seems like the lucky horseshoe team this season.

Will not watch, not worth my time. The cultural rot on display will be bad for the soul. Hope 49ers win causeJM, CM and KS and cause Kelce is a piece of human garbage. No clue who will win.

1. Want to win?  The Browns or the Lions.  But seeing as neither team cooperated this year I guess I'll pull for the 49ers as I'm kinda tired of watching KC hoist the trophy

2. That being said I think KC will win.  That team just finds ways to win big games

3. Because I think KC will win so I'll probably play them on the money line.

FWIW I saw an amazing stat recently that said in the Super Bowl points almost never matter.  That some crazy number of games (like 95% of them) the winner was the favorite and covered or the winner was the underdog.  So taking points in that game almost never impacts your bet.

Ugg don't care. Don't like either teams cities, colors, players.

If ravens and/or lions were in would watch.

Don't like the Jay Z produced half times. Hasn't been a good halftime in 12 years. Usher is not entertaining and he's smug. The 2000-2009 shows were great.

The commercials are boring now too since everyone went politically correct. Nothing funny or edgy. There will be a zillion State Farm and big pharma stuff.

Doubt I'll watch

1) Swift coverage is irritating. However, I can't believe a sane person would really be "enraged" by it.

2) More so, watching a potential 49er victory would be too much for my heart to take after letting myself mentally envision the Lions actually playing in the SuperBowl when they were up 24-7 at half. Should be Detroit getting the spotlight and the feel good story. Loss was just as crushing as the TCU loss.

Alas, Ben Johnson coming back for "unfinished business" Hmm, where did we hear that before? There is hope!

The matchup isn't exciting to me and I'm bitter about the Lions. Going to work out and/or mess around on the Xbox, then catch the 4th quarter if it's close. I want 49ers to win just because of the Michigan guys, but think Chiefs will win.

All you need to know about the Super Bowl is Taylor Swift is going to throw for 400 yards, run for an additional 200 yards, get seven sacks, and have four interceptions (two pick six)

She will of course be the MVP. She is going to Disney World.
