OT Pistons hire Monty Williams

6 yrs, $72M? Ka-CHING!
No cap on coaches
That's a nice "No? How about now?"
Tuck money
But Monty actually has a track record.
Mel has a track record. It was just very very short when he was hired by msu, and now it's just not very good.
Looks like we got The Full Monty.
Remind me to come back as CEO of a major corporation or an NFL or NBA head coach. A job where you get paid your full contract regardless of if you get fired or not, sounds ideal. Not to mention $70+ million. Just crazy.
I wonder what was behind Door #2.
Kevin Ollie
Thank god the Pistons avoided that
Would take him a an assistant focused on player development, but hiring him as a head coach with no previous NBA coaching experience would have been a bad call
John Beilein says "What?"
Definitely a goat, probably.
I like Monty... too bad the draft lottery was fixed
Yeah, the NBA fixed the lottery to send its best prospect since LeBron to one of its smallest markets. Brilliant move.
It may be a smaller market, but it's still a linchpin franchise that's fallen on hard times. There's a lot of lottery symmetry there with the Robinson and Duncan wins. Coincidence?
It’s now being reported it’s 6 years, 78.5mil (per Woj) guaranteed with metrics that if qualified for makes it 8 years and 100+mil. The largest contract in NBA coaching history.
I’m not sure if this moves the needle on the team but holy hell, can’t say ownership isn’t trying.
And Suns still owe him $20M over 3 yrs.
I'm 99% sure if you get another NBA job your previous team's financial commitments decrease.
This is exciting. Need someone to develop the talent on the roster AND be a big enough name to attract free agents. Monty fulfills both.
He can't do any worse than Van Gundy and Casey.
What a coup. Well done Pistons.
I was onboard for pretty much anyone but Ollie but thank god they pulled the trigger on Monty. Now, somehow, I’d like the Pistons to have a top 10 player in the league on the roster for the first time since Grant Hill left.
This feels simultaneously wildly insulting to that third Pistons championship team and also absolutely correct.
I disagree that it’s insulting. What was so incredible about that team was what they were able to accomplish together without that transcendent talent. Taking down the Lakers in 5 games (w/ Kobe, Shaq, The Mailman, and The Glove no less) was so rapturous (especially the way they did it). In the era of super teams though, I doubt they could pull it off again but it was incredibly special.
Every NBA Champion to date has had a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team except two. The 2004 Detroit Pistons and the 1979 Seattle Supersonics. The Denver Nuggets or Miami Heat will join this list as well, but I think it is a pretty good assumption that Nikola Jokic will make an NBA 100th Anniversary Team (possibly even Jimmy Butler if he has an epic Finals).
Chauncey Billups is one of the few NBA Finals MVPs to never make the Hall of Fame. The only other ones are Cedric Maxwell and Andre Iguodala.
Almost all the NBA Finals MVPs made the NBA 75th Anniversary team. The only other ones not on that team (in addition to the ones listed above) are Dennis Johnson, Joe Dumars, and Tony Parker.
That team was so fun to watch. I loved there games against the Pacers. Some real the radar talent. Big Ben was amazing, and his ability to keep Shaq in check one on one was a huge win. Sheed probably had the talent to be a top 100 fringe player, but his "bad boy" antics, probably kept him from being a star player that he had the talent for. Rip and Prince had such unique talents, that it really gave them a ton of flexibility. Chaunce was the perfect leader to run that team, and probably an underrated defender, since he was compared to Ben, Prince, and Sheed.
I haven't watched a ton of NBA since them, but those were fun times. Glad they took down the lakers and didn't give the Mailman his ring. (I have softened on him a little bit after watching his sit down talk with Isaah about the hit. I love seeing the old guys remenisce).
Every team that has won an NBA title has had a player that either had won or went on to win an NBA MVP award aside from 3 teams:
89 Pistons
90 Pistons
04 Pistons
Great Hire!
Very good hire, didn’t think they’d get him. However at that price tag it better work out! Young core to work with, very personable coach, maybe better days ahead for the Pistons?
Highest paid coach in NBA history.... I love the hire, but holy expectations, Spiderman.
What expectations? Gores kept a guy who lost year and year and didn't even fire him just moved him to front office.
Next to Budenholzer this is the coach I wanted. Ishbia is a clown for having fired this guy.
100% co-signed. As a Cavs fan I was really hoping they would move on from Bikerstaff and go after Monty. I watch the Heat with Prolestra and think if we had him as a HC we'd still be playing.
BTW, the last five words in your post were completely superfluous.
Edit: Ishbia is a clown for having fired this guy and hiring Frank Vogel
