Michigan transfer QB opportunity: TX 4* Hudson Card
Hudson Card, the backup quarterback to Quinn Ewers at Texas, announced he is entering the transfer portal. He has three years of eligibility remaining and is a redshirt sophomore. In the Class of 2020, he was the #59 national recruit in the 247 composite, and the #2 dual threat QB.
Michigan offered Card, but he chose to stay home and sign with Texas. He then got displaced when Quinn Ewers transferred from OSU to Texas and claimed the starting job this year.
Card comes out of the Austin-area Lake Travis program, which also produced Baker Mayfield, Garrett Wilson, and numerous other NFL players. Pete Thamel of Yahoo news dubbed Lake Travis "the country's top high school QB mill." (Incidentally, Lake Travis' Austin archrival, Westlake, produced Drew Brees, Nick Foles, and Cade Klubnik).
Given that we whiffed on Dante Moore, and with Cade transferring, we could use another starting-caliber QB to compete with Davis Warren for backup duties (and for the starting job when JJ departs for the NFL), why not take Card? According to ESPN, Card is "targeting a Power 5 school as his next destination, and he's prioritizing a winning program and the opportunity to develop."

I'm totally fine with Warren as our backup, and Davis coming in.
November 30th, 2022 at 2:30 PM ^
If JJ leaves for the draft next year, I'd like to bring in an experienced option in front of Davis for a year. Don't want to have to start Davis as a true freshman.
Honestly, I hope we can get Cade back...

I don't think we should rule out Warren starting for us at some point. The guy has some talent.
November 30th, 2022 at 3:55 PM ^
Davis wont be on campus till the 24 season

Jaden Davis Warren
A before and after in more ways than one!

Not to be a jerk but why would this guy come to sit behind JJ? He's already sitting behind Ewers at Texas. I'm sure he'll only go somewhere where he has a clear line to being the starter.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
Agreed.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:22 PM ^
MeL's coming for him.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
Mel too busy searching every dumpster for a not-completely-used-up scratchoff in case it's another Kenneth Walker
November 30th, 2022 at 1:59 PM ^
Haven't you heard? Dante Moore is already a Sparty lock
November 30th, 2022 at 2:14 PM ^
Don't laugh too hard about that. There really is smoke on this. Might not like it but...
November 30th, 2022 at 2:48 PM ^
I just don't understand the Dante Moore thing even more if he's now considering Sparty. He and Michigan are a match made in heaven--his Dad's a fan, they've been on him since 7th grade, he's been to AA a thousand times, his coach is Devin Gardner, and he would have one year apprenticing under JJ before becoming the starter in year 2. The rumors on Oregon is that they made him a sweeter NIL pitch including jobs at Nike, etc. But if he's willing to come off Oregon, WHY IN HELL would he choose a shitbag program like MSU?
November 30th, 2022 at 2:53 PM ^
I will crack up if any 5 star QB goes to MSU. They have a terrible Oline, they have terrible backups and they will never build depth by grabbing starters out of the portal every yr.
November 30th, 2022 at 3:08 PM ^
I'm sure there is something to it. Although if he does commit to MSU, it will only make me laugh harder.
November 30th, 2022 at 3:55 PM ^
Why am I hearing "no chance in hell"?
December 1st, 2022 at 5:08 AM ^
What smoke is there? Oregon’s OC left for ASU. Outside of that there has been no indication that Dante plans on decommitting and certainly no indication of any interest in MSU that I’m aware of.
November 30th, 2022 at 2:44 PM ^
He said "winning program".
November 30th, 2022 at 6:38 PM ^
The difference is that at Texas, Ewers is one class younger than Card. So if Ewers is the starter for the next three years, Card never gets to be the starter at Texas. Whereas at Michigan, assuming JJ leaves after the 2023 season, Card could get two years as the starter (2024 and 2025).
November 30th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
Ewers has one more year of eligibility compared to JJ and JJ could leave after next season, but anyway I agree.
November 30th, 2022 at 4:36 PM ^
Yeah but you have to think Arch Manning is basically already ahead of Card on the depth chart for 2024
November 30th, 2022 at 1:06 PM ^
Agreed - he is going to want to transfer someplace where he will get a legit chance to start.
Theres a lot of teams who are pretty damn close to being relevant, but just need a QB.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:13 PM ^
I think Max Duggan is leaving, so maybe TCU might be a good fit.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^
Exactly - the portal is great and empowering for the players to do what is best for them, and not necessarily what is best for the programs.
Sure, I would love to see top OL, DL, LB, DB, QB, RB, WR, etc. all clamoring to come here but they go to places where they can play right away and get proven development.
Right now for example, a lot of Iowa Hawkeye fans are abuzz about getting Cade McNamara; ok - he would definite be a major upgrade over the options there (Petras ? Padilla is in the portal) but why would Cade go there if they have the same coaches that "developed" Petras and Padilla.
It has to make sense for the player.
November 30th, 2022 at 7:15 PM ^
So Iowa thinks Cade is the player to be named later in the Ruddddock deal?
November 30th, 2022 at 2:51 PM ^
It could be because a Manning is showing up next yr also
November 30th, 2022 at 3:38 PM ^
If JJ leaves after the 2023 season, Card could be the starter in 2024 (Jadyn Davis will be a true freshman that year). That gives Card one year to learn the system, and one year (2024) to be the man, and possibly two (2025).
If Davis Warren is JJ-level quarterbacking, we don't need Card. But if Card could be an improvement on Davis Warren, it's worth taking him as a bridge to the Jadyn Davis era.
November 30th, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
Still hoping for Dante Moore in the 23 class
November 30th, 2022 at 8:16 PM ^
Like Wisconsin
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:33 PM ^
because every single player going into the portal MIGHT come to UM looking through the threads on here.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
Sure why not, but does he want to sit behind JJ 1-2 years with Davis potentially coming in '24?
November 30th, 2022 at 1:21 PM ^
Don't forget about Orji. He too has potential to become a QB1 after JJ. I'd hate to see Orji transfer out.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
I really don't think Orji is ever going to be QB1. He and Denegal are both not so good at throwing the ball.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
Orji will never be starting QB. His throwing skills are far below what we need to compete at the highest level. I've not seen Denegal play, but the coaches offered him for a reason. Hopefully he's good.
November 30th, 2022 at 2:09 PM ^
Magnus - Do you think there was ever another plan for Orji like moving him to another position?
November 30th, 2022 at 3:40 PM ^
I don't really have a problem with Michigan bringing in Orji and seeing what he can do as a QB. If he can learn to throw the ball, you have a very interesting dual-threat QB. I think he's just someone you bring in as an athlete and see how he works out. But similar to Dan Villari - who's now playing WR at Syracuse - he's probably just not going to be good enough at throwing to make an impact at the QB position.
Michigan barely let Villari throw the ball - except in the blowout against Maryland last year - and Orji seemed to be on the same path in the spring game and early this season.
There aren't many guys who started off at QB who weren't allowed to throw who then turned into quality quarterbacks. Even Denard Robinson got 31 passing attempts as a freshman in 2009. Villari got 4 in 2021 and Orji had 3 in 2020.
November 30th, 2022 at 3:59 PM ^
Villari averaging 22 ypc.
November 30th, 2022 at 5:57 PM ^
What do you mean by "even Denard Robinson?"
November 30th, 2022 at 2:12 PM ^
I'm on the move Orji to RB train. He's 6'2" 230 and I like what I've seen from him as a ball carrier
November 30th, 2022 at 2:20 PM ^
Might be able to 'Tim Tebow' (lite) Orji at some point. I think he'll have opportunities to contribute significantly over the next couple of seasons if he stays.
The QB room looks good.
November 30th, 2022 at 3:08 PM ^
I thought for sure we would see some Orji Saturday, on the field with JJ at the same time, motion JJ out, run up the gut with Orji. Eventually setting up a pass out to JJ for trickery!!
November 30th, 2022 at 9:52 PM ^
Good lord man get ahold of yourself. An orgy on the field “with JJ at the same time” is not something we need to think about ever.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
I'd be open to it but there will be plenty of programs that would offer him a better opportunity to come in and compete for a starting job.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
Michigan would be a good destination for him, but I don't think he'll want to sit around for JJ to leave only to 'compete' with Warren and (hopefully) Jayden Davis. The QB room in Schembechler Hall is pretty well stocked up right now...
November 30th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
He isn't coming here to fight for the backup position - he would just stay at Texas to do that.
I am sure he is looking for a place he can start.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
I don't know the player at all, but can he run/is he mobile? A QB that can avoid the rush and make plays with their legs is so important in college football. I never want to see a Wilton Speight back there again.
November 30th, 2022 at 2:28 PM ^
He’s the number 2 dual threat QB from the Class of 2020. That’s part of the appeal — he could do what JJ does.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
No
If we are looking for any transfers, I would guess it is most likely at DE or LB.
November 30th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
I'd take him of course but I doubt he's looking to transfer to be "not the guy" someplace else, mate.
That said his built-in resentment for OSU given the Ewers situation screwing up his time at Texas is a nice perk.
November 30th, 2022 at 2:56 PM ^
We'll take him only if he grows a mullet equally as hideous as Ewers.
