Former UT QB Casey Thompson transfers to Nebraska
Former Texas QB Casey Thompson transfers in the portal to Nebraska. He had a TD/INT ratio last year of 24/9, with 2,113 yards of passing, so he seems like a big step up from Adrian Martinez, who was great at times, and a hot mess at others.
Still, with the tire fire that is Nebraska, with all new coordinators, position coaches, and lots of transfers, I doubt this will save Scott Frost's job, which is bad news for Scott's mom.

Nebraska will have a winning record next year, Frost will keep his job. Hell Martinez lost 3 games by himself.

Nebraska lost a ton off their team especially on the defensive side. They will have less talent next year. Taking a quick look at their schedule maybe 6 wins at best

Ehhh, they have crossovers with Rutgers and IU and only four road games. You are correct that they lost a lot of guys on defense but it's not a very tough schedule.
I'd say 6 is the median outcome with a chance for 7 or even 8 if they can beat Purdue and/or Minnesota at home (plus all the games they'll likely be favored in).
And they could certainly win just 4 or 5 if they don't beat NW or Illinois/Rutgers.

I heard something similar about UM coming into the 2021 season.

Martinez also started under Scott Frost for four straight years and never really improved. I have to blame that at least in part on the coaching.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
Can't be. Nebraska is only allowed to have QB named Martinez.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:57 PM ^
Seems like a decade of Martinez at QB

Nebraska's QB before A Martinez was Tommy Armstrong Jr. There's a Tommy thing going on if you squint hard enough. Call him Tommy Casey Martinez IV?
January 7th, 2022 at 7:04 PM ^
And before Armstrong was Taylor Martinez…But, Michigan had only played against Wisconsin when the QB is a Martinez.

Is it a step up? Casey Thompson had the benefit of playing with players like Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy. Adrian Martinez had to be everything for Nebraska. It's possible Thompson outperforms Martinez, but he will be stepping into a role much different than QB at Texas.

So much this. Texas was almost as bad as Nebraska last year. They lost to Kansas at home ffs.
January 8th, 2022 at 12:26 AM ^
Ok but they had 49 points in regulation and put up 575 yards. It wasn't the offense.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:36 PM ^
Considering that this was Thompson's first year as a starter (he only threw 30 passes in the 2 years as a backup before this), and Adrian Martinez was in his 8th year (or it seems like it), even with Texas' better receivers, I'm going with Thompson as a step up on this one.
January 7th, 2022 at 6:13 PM ^
You do realize Casey Thompson is older than Adrian Martinez and about to turn 24 this year? They both signed in the Class of 2018. He might have one more year of eligibility than Martinez, but again I'm not sure it is a good thing to be a 23-year old sophomore who just got his first chance to play this year.
It might work out, but Thompson is going to have to carry a much bigger load at Nebraska than he was asked to do at Texas.

In a four team trade, Adrian Martinez goes from Nebraska to Kansas State, Casey Thompson goes from Texas to Nebraska, Quinn Ewers goes from Ohio State to Texas, and Ohio State gets salary relief.

....and a player to be named later.

The obsession this board has with Scott Frost’s mom is too much. It does not have to enter every conversation about Nebraska.

Sorry to offend you, Carol. Welcome to Mgoblog!

You sir, are wrong.
January 7th, 2022 at 6:35 PM ^
Well hello, Scott Frost's dad.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:47 PM ^
I'm a UT grad alum, so I caught a few games this year. If there's one key difference I noticed between the QBs, Casey seemed to have more command and confidence leading the offense. Disclaimers apply for Big 12 defenses, but it always felt like he was progressing toward a 1st down.
January 7th, 2022 at 6:14 PM ^
Big 12 defenses were actually pretty good this year.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:49 PM ^
Not to be confused with former Utah CB Casey Hughes, the Utah transfer.
January 7th, 2022 at 5:54 PM ^
We all know Scott is a great fit for that program and if they give him enough time, he will get them in contention for a B1G title. Doesn't change the fact that I don't like the guy...
January 7th, 2022 at 6:10 PM ^
Yes. I hope Nebraska signs him to a forever contract. He's a twerp and is destined to fail, however.
January 7th, 2022 at 6:26 PM ^
O/U on the number of press conferences before Scott Frost throws Adrian Martinez under the bus for Nebraska's shitty record...2.5?
"Yeah, Casey can make all the throws. And with Casey, we can really get things done on offense without all the mental mistakes..." or some such.
January 7th, 2022 at 6:33 PM ^
I can't believe Martinez wasn't granted a 9th year.
January 7th, 2022 at 10:25 PM ^
Sounds similar to Harbaugh right before he turned it around though.
January 9th, 2022 at 12:33 PM ^
I see 7-5 with a bowl game. Scott will be back in 2023. The Pitt OC will help out - Casey is pretty explosive and not the TO machine that Martinez was.
