Thanks for this. I didn't realize.
August 28th, 2021 at 2:53 PM ^
Who gives a shit about people that transfer? Watch the Michigan team in the LLWS instead.
August 28th, 2021 at 2:55 PM ^
Bruh... who hurt you?
August 28th, 2021 at 5:46 PM ^
Those downvotes are hell.
Shaka to you Bruh.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
Unless they leave on bad terms, why not? Zach was a well liked player, just wasn't getting playing time and so went elsewhere. Speaking for the vast majority, I wish him luck.
Good luck with the neg fest.
August 28th, 2021 at 6:24 PM ^
I wish him all the best as well. Sure does hurt watching him run up and down on Hawai'i, however. Would've love to see him do that in a winged helmet this season.
August 28th, 2021 at 9:20 PM ^
I share the sentiment, but honestly don't believe he should be taking snaps away from Haskins or Corum. So we can safety cheer him on and wish him the best.

August 28th, 2021 at 3:08 PM ^
So... by that rationale, you'd watch Staee play before a team with a Michigan transfer??? Charbonet read the writing on the wall and knew he'd been beat out by Haskins and Corum. He transferred to a school where he could play. Can't hate on him for that.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:31 PM ^
Yes, and he also transferred from a program that was a very long way from his home, during a pandemic, to a program in his home city. I really have no problem with that and I wish him the best.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:51 PM ^
By transferring, he frees up a scholarship for another player instead of occupying a slot while sitting on bench watching Haskins, Corum, and Edwards. It is a win-win.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:47 PM ^
Actually yes. What MSU does impacts us and we play them this year.
Watching Michigan transfers is like stalking your exgfs social media. Have at it but it’s not a healthy use of your time.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:48 PM ^
Thanks for the life advice. That's what I come here for.
August 28th, 2021 at 7:03 PM ^
I come for the politics and COVID news
August 28th, 2021 at 5:03 PM ^
Or, bear with us, it is a football game, and football games are fun to watch--and this one has a former player who was given a raw deal last year but left on good terms.
Oh, and he has 106 yards and 3tds in the first half, so that's pretty exciting. Maybe that means we will have more production out of our three guys with Hart as RB coach calling the rotation.
August 28th, 2021 at 5:51 PM ^
No.. it isn't. Being mildly interested in what a former player is doing at a new school while also enjoying a college football game is not like stalking your ex on social media.
I think most fans wish Zach the best, and there is nothing wrong with casually tuning in to see how he's doing.
Frankly, I think it is unhealthy to think that's unhealthy.
August 28th, 2021 at 6:31 PM ^
We could all be like you and not give a shit so much that we come here to bitch about it instead of just scrolling and continuing with our day and watching the LLWS game.
August 28th, 2021 at 7:10 PM ^
Nah. Cool former M player who I want to see excel. Think I'll watch. You do your thing and go poop on someone else's parade.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:13 PM ^
Game is on ESPN

Nothing says college football is back more than the sweet sounding voice of Beth Mowins.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:33 PM ^
I think there might be a 1000 fans in the Rose Bowl.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:40 PM ^
They might have vac passport rules or something. Because there should be more than that.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:43 PM ^
This is UCLA, students aren’t on campus, yet, LA fans are awful, and it’s hot. Vaccine rules likely aren’t a factor.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:45 PM ^
Didn't know school wasn't in yet. There's vac card rules in San Francisco. I thought maybe in LA too.
August 28th, 2021 at 6:36 PM ^
Haven’t found updated CoVid attendance policy in my very short research. But I saw as of August 4th both UCLA and USC were allowing full capacity. Oh, and with a marquee opponent coming to town (LSU), UCLA is currently giving away tickets.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:59 PM ^
LA fans aren't awful. The Dodgers and Lakers routinely lead their leagues in attendance, and USC draws well. UCLA plays an hour from campus and school hasn't started. And UCLA is simply the backup team in LA.
August 28th, 2021 at 10:22 PM ^
“USC draws well.” Define “well.”
“The Trojans averaged 59,358 fans for home games in 2019, a slight increase from 55,449 in 2018 but well below the 72,588 the team averaged in 2017.”
USC ranks seventh in the PAC12 in filled stadium capacity percentage, seeing 85.5% of the LA Memorial Coliseum filled on average over the last 5 years*
* last 5 years where attendance was allowed, so 2015-2019
August 28th, 2021 at 4:42 PM ^
I saw Michigan play UCLA non-conference in 2000. It was 98 degrees and completely miserable. Hayden Epstein missed three field goals and there were rumors it was because the ball melted. I thought I was going to die. Rose Bowl is a miserable place for a daytime game in the early fall.
August 28th, 2021 at 5:57 PM ^
That's an exaggeration. Most weekends in the fall, it's very pleasant and I've never been to a game there that wasn't. No doubt, it can be hot in early fall, and that can be said for Michigan stadium too. But that's not normal weather for LA.
August 28th, 2021 at 6:20 PM ^
The average high on August 28 is 92; it's 97, per the NWS, modestly but not excessively more. Feels worse outdoors under the sun.
"Most of the fall" incorporates the bulk of the season after the school year starts up in late September. It is absolutely hot there at this time of year.
It might not explain the attendance on its own, but with a casual fanbase, etc, it certainly helps complete the explanation.
August 28th, 2021 at 8:56 PM ^
How does one get 20m MGoPoints?
August 28th, 2021 at 6:36 PM ^
I should have said before Labor Day instead of early fall. I lived in LA for five years. Pasedena is pretty nice, but sitting in direct sun with 100,000 during the hottest hours of the day (anywhere) is miserable. I got [heat blisters/2nd degree burns]at the ?1990 Maryland game in the big house.
August 28th, 2021 at 9:38 PM ^
I also went to the 2000 game. Over 100 people were sent to the hospital with heat exhaustion.
I was in Arcadia, near Pasadena, today. I spent an hour outdoors in the shade. It was miserable. I can’t imagine willingly spending 4 hours sitting in the sun when the game is televised. I saw a guy looking completely comfortable wearing blue jeans. I guess you get used to it if you live there.
August 29th, 2021 at 4:58 AM ^
C’mon. I was at that game and it was not nearly as bad as you are making out.
Weather history says the Pasadena high that day was 86. Sure, it was hotter on the field, but it wasn’t ridiculous.
August 28th, 2021 at 7:10 PM ^
Well, they announced 32,982 (2nd lowest ever in the Rose Bowl).
...so one of you is lying. And I can't tell which one.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:33 PM ^
Not a crazy stat at all, Chip Kelly liked to use the non-conference season to “workshop” his playbook and prove how smart he is.
I’m interested to see if UCLA finally looks functional.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
Chip Kelly non conference games at UCLA:
L vs Cincinatti
L @ Oklahoma
L vs Fresno State
L @Cincinatti
L vs SDSU
L vs Oklahoma
They played a pretty aggressive schedule, but still..
August 28th, 2021 at 3:34 PM ^
Ugh. Beth Mowens, what we in the industry call a “puker” bc she over emphasizes her syllables when she talks. Nobody talks like her in real life, but stick a microphone in front of them and they proceed to puke alL over it.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:42 PM ^
Hell, I saw that the punters knee was down live.
August 28th, 2021 at 3:42 PM ^
Charbonnet is 2nd string. 28, Brittain, is the starter.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:01 PM ^
Zach Charbonnet transfered from a mediocre program coached by a man who garnered tons of hype 10 or so years ago with QBs that can't hit open receivers and an RB rotation where he couldn't get first-choiced carries, to a mediocre program coached by a man who garnered tons of hype 10 or so years ago with a QB that can't hit open receivers and an RB rotation where he can't get first-choice carries.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:04 PM ^
...And he immediately gets three quality touches and scores. C'est la vie.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:07 PM ^
Yup, now let’s see what he looks like against a quality opponent.
That said if he has a big year and Michigan’s three backs struggle it’ll be yet another depressing data point.
August 28th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
I'll be fair about this: Michigan really tried to keep him engaged. But Hassan Haskins wasn't getting touches because he was a prospect or a coaches favorite. He got touches because he produced.
To be honest I consider Haskins to be the flip side of AJ Dillon, the lower-rated guy we missed on in favor of higher-rated guys who didn't perform or didn't come at all who just kept producing on the field. Haskins is the lower-rated guy that got a chance and earned what he got, performing on the field.
Would have been nice if Charbonnet stayed, and I do think that my snark has some merit, but... he wasn't the best back on our roster. And wouldn't be this year.
August 28th, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
It's Hawaii... No need to get hot and bothered off Hawaii.
August 28th, 2021 at 5:32 PM ^
Overreacting to the first game of the season is one of college football's most storied traditions. Don't ruin it for us now.
August 28th, 2021 at 11:14 PM ^
He is in the driver's seat for the September Heisman.
/jk
August 28th, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
Hawaii or not, he still showed excellent feet, that lower body strength to break tackles, and acceleration.
Haskins has a better burst as a North-South runner, but has rarely shown the East-West ability Zach does. Haskins has inconsistent vision, but I hope he’s able to be the kind of Derrick Henry type bulldozer he has flashed.
It’s hard to say Zach lost anything in the games when he was never given solid carries last year despite showing more play among ability as a true freshman.
To say Haskins is better than ZC when Haskins after two seasons still hasn’t had enough carries to be over 1000 career yards is team bias. ZC had 750 yards and 11 TDs as a freshman with an injured knee.
The only reason to say Haskins is better is that he’s in UM and we need him to be. Personally, I’d be less surprised to see Donovan Edwards overtake the bulk of carries by mid October despite Haskins doing well if he is as special as advertised.
